25.01.2022 Oops, 8 minutes late because it completely slipped Coach Avery's mind and he's been attending an online conference all day! Belated Happy World Fencing Day!

25.01.2022 Hey Sabreurs, I've written a short post on preparing for Sabre comps. Feel free to take or leave any of this advice, it's largely constructed from my various co...aches through the years. - Bring both a sports drink and a bottle of water with you. Sabre is much, much faster than the other two weapons. Even though the bouts are shorter (or rather, faster), they are very active. If you don't normally bring a sports drink for fencing comps (which are good for all three weapons), bring one for sabre. - Go in with specific goals. Only one (if any) should be about results for the competition. Make sure at least one goal relates to a specific skill and one relates to your attitude/mentality/disposition etc. For example, my goals for this comp are 1) To have fun 2) practice second intention actions 3) Coach the VDFC folks to improve throughout 4) Aim to earn a medal (=3rd or above). - Get there AT LEAST half an hour before start and spend a large amount of time warming up (plus, chipping in to help out with setup is important at club level). If you have the time/space, after warming up try to have a dry warmup bout with someone. The goal of these warmup hours isn't to win, but to get into the zone and get your fencing actions prepared. - Call your hits. Some people yell, some cheer, some pump their first, whatever. After your hit, be sure to show that you think you got it, but make sure you stop as soon as the ref tells you to knock it off. - Sabre comps are about momentum. If you're getting overwhelmed, take some time to catch your breath. Strategic shoelace things, hair fixing, etc are fine, but again, when the ref calls you en garde knock it off straight away. You cannot technically be carded for delaying the start of a bout but you CAN be carded for failing to promptly obey the ref. - Use the poules to feel out your opponents. This is where you try to catch people out, experiment with new tactics, see who is off their game etc. The DEs are do-or-die, so try to have some tactics in mind for each fencer or at least one action to try off the line. Related, watch the other bouts if you're not fencing or reffing. It helps keep your head in the game and it helps you gather information on how people fence; it's much easier to pay attention when you're not dodging a sword! - Above all, enjoy yourselves. Hopefully you're competing because you love fencing (and sabre!) so do your best and have fun! :) Good luck to you all!

25.01.2022 Weve moved our Social Fridays (7:30 pm - 9 pm tonight!) to a Discord server due to technical issues with the Zoom session we had on the first week. For the link to the server please email Coach Avery: [email protected] :)

24.01.2022 Havent found a sport that appeals to you yet? Why not have a stab at fencing?

24.01.2022 Always the thrillseekers, Karina and Avery had to evacuate their accommodation at 3am due to a very burning car in the alleyway behind the building. They're back in bed now thanks to the fast work of 3+ Victorian Fire Service trucks worth of firefighters.

24.01.2022 Hello Everyone! We are so glad that club is back from this evening, but there are a few things we need you to help us with: 1. Please arrive ready for club and leave as soon as club finishes 2. Please bring a drink bottle 3. Please use only the front door... 4. Please use the hand sanitiser that will be on a chair just inside the front door 5. PLEASE stay home if you are sick 6. Pretty please use the tape markings on the stage to guide where you place your chair so you stick to the social distancing IF you dont own fencing equipment we will lend you a kit for Term 3. You will need to care for this kit as if it were your own and bring it to club each week. We will give you a sheet on caring for gear (its pretty simple). :) Please remember to HAVE FUN! <3

24.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who joined our Social Friday last night!! We even had our long-lost fencers Don and Bryn joining us from Melbourne and Sydney! 17.01.2022 Coaching? Refereeing? Armoury? Olympian?

17.01.2022 It was heartwarming to see so many of our lovely fencers at club tonight! We hope that those of you who couldnt make it can come along next Tuesday.

16.01.2022 This week at Junior club we had Llewellyn, Austin and Olly, accompanied by Jacob and Hugo who we managed to not scare off at their first visit last week () AND we welcomed Ziggy and Zara! What a busy session! (Sorry Senior fencers; well take more photos of you next week!)

14.01.2022 Check out these before and after shots to see the incredible job Ben did restoring two of the club sabres after they rusted in storage during lockdown! Ben is spending the next two Tuesday club sessions giving everyone interested a crash course in fencing sabre in preparation for the Nov 24th State Sabre Championships hosted by the Tasmanian University Fencing Club! Following the comp, Ben will continue to run sabre sessions. :D We are VERY lucky to have this opportunity; Ben is an experienced sabreur and already has heaps of excellent drills organised. Plus he's lovely and we just know he's going to be an awesome coach! Don't be shy; give sabre a try! ;)

14.01.2022 Hi everyone, Unfortunately today's Zoom training sessions are cancelled. Please check back tomorrow morning for an update on the Sunday sessions!

13.01.2022 Honour and respect are very important. Before they fence, fencers salute each other and their referee. Although we no longer shake hands after weve fenced, we do give each other a second salute instead.

13.01.2022 Fencing is so exhilarating that you wont even notice that youre getting fitter at the same time!

12.01.2022 Did you know that fencing is one of the safest Olympic sports? Mostly thanks to modern safety equipment and strict safety rules. Check out this article: https://www.fencing.net/13020/fencing-safer-than-badminton/

12.01.2022 These good doggos have a reminder for all of our lovely fencers :)

12.01.2022 A bit late but here are a couple of pics from last week! Inspite of the extremely Wintery weather we still had fencers! AND we welcomed four new friends - Jacob, Hugo, Ethan and Marcus - to Junior club. We welcomed back our new friends Abi and Luke at Senior club.

12.01.2022 Our Saturday sessions in Kingborough will be back in Term Four! The lovely team at Tarremah Steiner School have agreed for us to hire their beautiful hall and we couldnt be more excited! The below images of the hall are from Google Images and the images of the fencers are a flashback to our fencing sessions with Tarremah students in June last year. :)

12.01.2022 We're on the road promoting the club this morning! Have a stab at fencing at your local session: Tuesdays in Glenorchy, Saturdays in Hunting field. :)

11.01.2022 Oops, 8 minutes late because it completely slipped Coach Averys mind and hes been attending an online conference all day! Belated Happy World Fencing Day!

09.01.2022 What shall we do this World Fencing Day?! :D

09.01.2022 Hey everyone, I'm going to be starting a weekly series of posts where I post my 'sabre video of the week'. Kicking off this week is Sydney Sabre's introduction ...to modern sabre fencing. It's mostly intended for spectators and people unfamiliar with sabre or fencing in general but is a really good intro to basic rules and actions in sabre. Following weeks will be a mix of training-focused videos like this and some great sabre matches. Feel free to ask me any questions you've got about the videos and I'll do my best to answer! See more

09.01.2022 Cant make Social Friday but want to watch the videos in your own time? Nat kindly curated these: 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGRVlIEVDSQ 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch... 3. https://www.youtube.com/watch 4. https://www.youtube.com/watch 5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKDHeLgI8f8 Bon appe-fence!

06.01.2022 Weve officially survived our first Saturday of Zoom sessions! Tomorrow (Sunday) we have Beginners (1:15 - 1:45) and Intermediate/Advanced (2 - 2:30). Well be focussing on footwork but have a sword and something to poke ready if you have them. :)

04.01.2022 Some people like to fence casually, and some people like to fence competitively. SOME fencers like to fence competitively casually. Which are you?
