24.01.2022 A big thank you to Suzanne Culbert who generously donated 25 beanies handmade using local sheep's wool, which will be provided to local young people receiving supports from Veritas House. Not only do they look fab, they will also help to keep our clients warm during these chilly winter days. Thank you so much for your support Suzanne!

24.01.2022 Youth Action NSW has this week released the results of the largest survey of the NSW Youth Sector in a decade. However the finding that the huge majority of workers describe 'making a difference in the lives of young people' as their primary motivation to work in the youth sector comes as no surprise to the team at Veritas House. If you can relate, now might be the perfect opportunity to join our homelessness team in Orange! Check out our website for a great position currently available: http://bit.ly/VHcareers

23.01.2022 After a challenging few weeks, Veritas staff finished the week with a virtual Easter Hat Parade, including gift vouchers supporting local businesses as prizes. From our Veritas House family to yours, wishing everyone a safe and relaxing Easter break and don't forget to #StayAtHomeAndStaySafe. Veritas will continue to deliver essential services over the Easter holiday period, but our offices will be unattended. If you or someone you know needs urgent help or support over the break, call link2home Homelessness Line on 1800 152 152 or visit our website: https://veritashouse.org.au/contact-veritas-house-bathurst/

21.01.2022 Happy 2020 Mardi Gras weekend to everyone in the #LGBTIQ community in our region and, in particular, to those special local same-sex couples who give their time and love as Foster Carers with Veritas House. http://bit.ly/VHFosterCare

19.01.2022 A big thank you to Harris Farm Markets for generously ensuring those staying at our youth refuge in Orange and local young people who have recently transitioned from homelessness to independence have access to delicious fresh fruit and veges while remaining in iso. We are lucky to have such caring local businesses supporting one another! A big shout out also to Orange City Council for doing a fantastic job coordinating the deliveries. Veritas House staff are continuing to deliver essential services to vulnerable children, young people and families in our community during these challenging times and we are incredibly grateful to the businesses and individuals who continue to support us while we do.

18.01.2022 A huge thank you to Torren from the headspace Orange Youth Reference Group who dropped in to deliver a stack of Bags 4 Better to our SHS Team Leader, Ty. This is a project the local YRG started last year, where they put together donations of toiletries, socks, pens, drink bottles and other items into bags to support homeless young people in the local community. A great example of local young people helping local young people, and an appropriate way to mark Homelessness Week!

16.01.2022 As we approach the Winter solstice and another cold weekend, we want to send a warm shout out to our very good friend Nicky, who has crocheted her way through a blanket for every bed at our youth refuge at Orange, and now almost completed every bed at our Bathurst refuge. Not only do they keep our residents toasty warm, it means the world to the young people and our staff knowing that a community member cares so much.

14.01.2022 We are OVER THE MOON to have been announced as one of five finalists to receive a $10,000 major grant through the Westfund Community Grant Program - but we need your help! PLEASE take just two minutes to click on the link below and vote for Veritas House and please share with your networks and encourage them to vote also. It would be very exciting for Veritas and the region if we were successful, but it will be tough when we are competing against communities the size of Wollongong, Toowoomba and Geelong, so we need the Central West to get behind us! Cast your vote online: https://www.westfund.com.au/grants/

13.01.2022 Everyone is being told they should stay at home, but for many of the young people Veritas supports who are experiencing homelessness, home during Covid is a youth refuge or transitional accommodation. So we were pretty pumped today to receive our delivery of Sleep Kits thanks to Sheridan and our friends at StreetSmart Australia! Sleep Kits are manufactured by Sheridan using excess material and each kit contains a sheet set and towel. We will provide a kit to young people staying at our refuges so they can sleep in comfort while they stay with us and can take them with them when they leave. If you would like more information on the SleepSafe initiative or would like to donate $15 to provide a kit to someone in need, visit https://streetsmartaustralia.org/sleepsafe/

13.01.2022 If this meme is how you are feeling when you think about another work day, maybe it's time to use your CPA or CA Accounting qualifications working with a community-based agency that is improving the lives of children, young people and families in our region? Veritas House currently has available a Finance Manager position on our Executive team, which could be the perfect opportunity to make a positive change in your work life. Check out our careers page: https://veritashouse.org.au/careers-with-us/

11.01.2022 While in lockdown, why not take the opportunity to clean out that drawer or cupboard and locate old mobile phone handsets that you no longer need and put them to good use? We are still in desperate need of handsets that we can provide to young people we are providing 'virtual' services to, particularly in remote communities of Western NSW. Handsets can be dropped at our offices in Orange or Bathurst, or get in contact and we can arrange to collect them from your front doorstep. At times like these, we all need to do things that make ourselves feel good and help others, and this would achieve both!

11.01.2022 To help relieve some of the boredom of ISO, Veritas staff are sharing links to a range of websites with children, young people and families we are supporting, and have captured all of the information on our website to help ensure it is easy to find: https://veritashouse.org.au/covid-19/ The page includes information on how we are continuing to deliver our services, advice from our Clinical and Consultation Services team to help families, and a collection of resources to help support healthy minds, healthy bodies, creative and/or educational sites and Arts and Culture. We're also hoping to keep adding to our collection, so if there is a site that your family recommends, be sure to let us know!

11.01.2022 A massive thank you to Rosie, Cheryl and everyone involved with the Karma Yiwong Samten Ling Tibetan Buddhist Centre at Molong for their very generous donation of delicious, nutritious meals. Not only were they enjoyed by young people staying at our refuge, the additional meals have been frozen so that young people who are experiencing homelessness and have no food or are unable to cook due to the accommodation they are in can also enjoy a yummy meal.

10.01.2022 Today marks the start of National Families Week and we would like to take the opportunity to celebrate the diversity of families in our region. In particular, we want to acknowledge the vital role Veritas House Foster Carers play in providing safe and loving homes to local children and young people. #NationalFamiliesWeek #StrongerFamiliesStrongerCommunities http://bit.ly/VHFosterCare

09.01.2022 Thank you to the folks at PCYC Orange for their donation of six hampers, brimming with food, hygiene and home cleaning products, not to mention a Harris Farm voucher in each basket, which will be given to young people living independently or currently couch surfing in the Orange community. Pictured here, Veritas House SHS Team Leader, Ty and Residential Youth Worker, Scott gratefully receive the hampers on behalf of the local young people awaiting these much-needed supplies, presented by Jaylene Coughlan, PCYC President (left) and Jaime Wenban, PCYC Manager (right). You're generosity is greatly appreciated!

09.01.2022 Every young person has the right to feel safe in their home. Yet 70% of young people experiencing homelessness have left their home to escape family violence, child abuse or family breakdown. Today is Youth Homelessness Matters Day, and though there won't be any events this year, we're asking our online community to mark the occasion by: taking a moment to read this post and learn the facts about youth homelessness, so that together we can identify, address and support loca...l young people in need taking a moment to check out our website and understand the supports that Veritas House has provided to local young people for almost 40 years taking a moment to consider the impact that not having a safe home has on local young people, particularly during COVID-19, and taking a moment to consider what having a home means to you and what it allows you to do. And then join the #YHMD2020 online campaign by finishing the following sentence in the comments below: With a home, young people can....

08.01.2022 A large number of Veritas staff have committed to completing 3,046 push-ups in 21 days (either individually or as a team) representing the number of people 3,046 lives lost to suicide in 2018. In addition to raising awareness, we are raising funds for our friends at headspace Bathurst and headspace Orange. 07.01.2022 The Orange Youth Action Council - YAC has organised an innovative Youth Week Event perfect for while we're all isolated at home, which commences on April 4. Check out their Instagram page @YAC for all the details on how to get involved.

03.01.2022 Seventeen-year-old Jenny arrived at Veritas House youth refuge with some clothes packed in a suitcase loaned to her from family. She came to Veritas because she no other options for accommodation with friends or family and had to relocate 3 hours away from her hometown due to experiencing homelessness. After being in the refuge for 2 months she connected with other family who provided her with accommodation. She had to return the suitcase that was loaned to her, but was provi...ded with a brand new suitcase that was purchased with a Cafesmart grant from StreetSmart Australia. This suitcase will help me move to my dad’s house, which is where I wanna be, said Jenny. Thank you to the customers and staff at Omar by Academy and Bensons cafe who supported CafeSmart in August last year. Your support is ensuring young people like Jenny can leave our service with dignity with their possessions safe and secure in a suitcase, ready for the next stage of their lives.

03.01.2022 A huge thank you to Ashcroft's Orange IGA for an incredible $4,300 donation towards our Transitional Youth Housing Appeal. Thanks to the generosity of the Orange community and businesses like Ashcroft's IGA, this donation takes the amount raised through our Appeal to more than $40,000. Check out our website for more information on our Appeal or to make a tax deductible donation: https://veritashouse.org.au/orange-transitional-youth-hous/

02.01.2022 Today on National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day we stand up and say no to domestic and family violence and light this candle to acknowledge all of the victims of domestic abuse. 01.01.2022 With many children in our region at home and the challenges sometimes involved with trying to teach them about the importance of washing hands, we love this fun and educational video teaching the importance of using soap - one of the best ways to avoid catching Covid-19. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvG6uBq-dV0&feature=youtu.be

01.01.2022 For many young people being supported by Veritas, the cost of a mobile phone is unobtainable, however access to a phone can be critical for our caseworkers to maintain communication and check on their safety, particularly for young people in remote communities across the region. If you are upgrading your mobile phone and no longer need your old handset, please consider donating it to Veritas - we can assure you it will be gratefully received by its new owner!
