25.01.2022 D o y o u have difficulty waking up in the morning? Do you need coffee to get going in the morning? Have you recently gained weight, especially around the middle? Do you feel like you get every cold and flu that is going around? Do you have more difficulty dealing with stress and pressure than you used to?... Do you have a low libido? Do you frequently feel lightheaded upon standing quickly? Do you struggle with poor memory or brain fog? Do you feel especially tired in the mornings and afternoons between 3-5pm? Do you feel the need to snack or eat frequently to maintain a normal blood sugar? Do you crave salty foods? Do you feel extremely tired between 7-10pm but get a second wind if you stay up later? Do you struggle with PMS: heavy bleeding, moodiness, fatigue during menstrual cycle? Do you frequently have pain in the upper back or neck with no apparent reason? Do you notice improvement of these symptoms if stress levels are lower, such as during a holiday or time away from work? You may have adrenal issues. Your adrenals are two walnut sized glands that sit on top of your kidneys and are part of the endocrine or hormone system of the body, involved in producing over 50 hormones. Adrenal glands play a huge role in stress response. Prolonged periods of stress or busy-ness will change how our adrenals function, leading to fluctuations of our hormones and many of the symptoms above. One of my focuses in practice is supporting women’s energy, sleep and stress levels- and an adrenal assessment is always top of my list - have you had your adrenal health assessed? #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #femalehormones #adrenalfatigue #holistichealth #margaretriver See more

25.01.2022 Saturday....time for a reset after a crazy week, our adrenals which pump stress hormones all week so that we can do all the things NEED time to rest and recuperate, in fact we are supposed to rest for 24 hours after a busy time for them to restock with nutrients to keep making hormones. R and R isn’t a luxury it’s a necessity #selfcare #adrenalfatigue #fatigue #femalehealth #weekend #saturday #relationships #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #margaretriver

25.01.2022 Top tips for when you are really busy but still want to eat healthily- eating healthily when we are busy will keep us filled with the nutrients, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals that we NEED to function well under pressure. Smoothies So fast, just pour some coconut water, coconut milk or nut milk into the blender, then throw in some fruits (I love berries) AND some veggies (spinach, cucumber, lettuce, just to name a few). Add some protein if you like (hemp seed, flaxseed ...or chia seed, or maybe a scoop of hemp protein powder) and some healthy fats (avocado). For extra flavour, add some vanilla extract or dash of cinnamon. Voila, nutrient and taste explosion. Overnight Oats in a jar combine oats, chia seeds, nut butter, milk of choice, fresh fruit, pop on the lid and soak of an instant easy breakfast., Salads. Chop up a bunch of lettuce and add some spinach. Pile on some other veggies tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, radishes, beetroot , capsicums, onionswhatever you like. Add some protein. Choose pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, cooked organic chicken breast, kidney beans, sprouts, a hard-boiled egg, or salmon or tuna. Make a quick dressing with mustard, olive oil, balsamic and fresh herbs, sea salt. Toss it all together and eat. If you chop the veggies in bulk you can make a couple salads at a time, don’t add the dressing to them yet, and they usually last a couple days. We can never underestimate the goodness of fresh greens and salad. Slow cooked meals- the ultimate in winter comfort food, there are multiple recipes online- great for using cheaper cuts of meat, tons of veggies and spices. What are your favourite ways to have fresh healthy food in a hurry? #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #healthyfood #realfood #healthylifestyle #eatclean #mealprep #plantbased #fitfood #margaretriver See more

23.01.2022 F A C I A L H A I R is one of the many joys that commonly accompanies our journey into our 40s and it’s sudden appearance is caused by excess testosterone (androgen hormone) levels. Natural supplements can be used to block and reduce testosterone levels Zinc taken at 30-50mg daily can decrease facial hair in just 8 weeks Herbs Peony and Licorice and Reishi Mushroom can lower testosterone levels and block androgen receptors DIM derived from cruciferous vegetables can... also block androgen receptors Progesterone hormone reduces testosterone levels, we only make this on ovulation Also its vital to investigate root causes, normally PCOS (polycystic ovaries) is involved - this condition is all too commonly misdiagnosed and mismanaged, with the medical world recommending a shut down of the cycle through contraception- this is not going to address your root causes and often accompanying symptoms continue. DM me to investigate your root causes #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #hormonehealth #naturalhealing #plantmedicine #nutritionalmedicine #womenshealth #margaretriver See more

22.01.2022 Adrenal Insufficiency is a common condition whereby our adrenal glands no longer function at their optimal level. It occurs after weeks, months or years of overproduction of adrenal hormones in response to stress from our busy, overloaded, stressful lives. It can have a profound effect on our health. Adrenal Insufficiency is extremely common with a large percentage of the population suffering from some degree of adrenal exhaustion. It is not a condition generally diagnosed ...by doctors. It is important to understand that the onset and duration of adrenal insufficiency has great individual variation and one person may withstand a stress quite easily but another person may find the same stress overwhelming and difficult to manage. Below are some of the contributing factors that lead to adrenal fatigue. Excessive stressful life events such as a change in financial status, death of friend or family, divorce, moving residence, loss or change of job, parenting or dealing with prolonged illness. Being in a position of constant pressure but having no ability to control the workload The following causes are things you, very likely, have the power to modify. Constantly pushing yourself without balancing it with enjoyable and rejuvenating activities Trying to be perfect and having excessive expectations of yourself Pushing yourself late into the evening regardless of obvious tiredness Poor food choices and using food and drinks as stimulants when tired Lack of good quality sleep The good news is that it is possible to recuperate from adrenal insufficiency and prevent further deterioration through the use of a number of lifestyle, dietary and psychological strategies, plus by supplementing certain nutrients and herbs. Do you think you may have adrenal issues? DM me today to investigate and turn your energy levels around

22.01.2022 How does food affect your mood? Did you know that food has vibrations that allow it to create change in our bodies on a cellular level? Food that is alive and from the earth will energize and invigorate you, while processed, pre-packaged, dead food will leave you feeling lethargic and uninspired, like a light that has fizzled out. Makes sense doesn’t it? Dark green leafy vegetables are full of chlorophyll, which is basically liquid sunshine. It is the substance in plants t...hat allows them to absorb light from the sun and convert it into usable energy. When we consume raw dark green vegetables such as kale, broccoli and silver beet, we fill our body with the equivalent of the plant’s life blood the very thing that allows a seed to flourish and take form. Chemically, the blood of the plant, chlorophyll, is very similar to our blood and, when consumed, it helps us to oxygenate and breathe life into every cell. Chlorophyll is also extremely cleansing and detoxifying. Here are some other high vibrational foods for you to try: 1. Tree Fruits try apples, pears, bananas, coconuts, avocados, nectarines, peaches, plums, apricots, oranges, lemons, limes, mangos, pomegranates, blueberries, cherries, and olives. 2. Non-green veggies 3. Raw Cacao chocolate in its pure form has over 1,200 phytonutrients. It contains nutrients like magnesium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, copper, and manganese. It also contains phenylethylamine, which are the feel good characteristics, and theobromine which dilates the cardiovascular system to allow all the benefits to come in. 4. Goji Berries packed with antioxidants, which can help minimize free radical damage to our cells. 5. Cultured and Fermented Foods a great source of probiotics, which will help your digestion stay on track. I firmly believe in the old saying, You are what you eat. Junk in = feeling like junk, and rich, living, nutrient-dense food = much happier body and mind. Would you agree? #naturopath #nutrition #wholefoods #plantbased #detox #slowfood #guthealth #femalehealth #margaretriver

22.01.2022 Not sleeping well? This could be causing a real roadblock to healing as our cells renew and restore whilst we sleep, making hormones, detoxifying our liver, recharging our brain and renewing immunity. To reset your circadian rhythms (our natural sleep/wake cycle) try establishing a set time for sleeping/rising expose yourself to bright light on waking get up when you wake up, don’t linger in bed ... at night dim lights, use apps such as Flux to eliminate white light on laptops, switch to Night mode and minimum brightness on screens no caffeine or chocolate after 2pm eat light at night, your body needs to use its energy to rejuvenate rather than digesting a heavy meal, avoid eating after 8pm ....more sleep tips and recommendations to come! #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #sleep #fatigue #energy #hormones #detox #naturalhealing #wholistichealth #margaretriver

22.01.2022 L E A K Y G U T or intestinal permeability is a digestive condition in which bacteria or toxins can leak through the intestinal wall. This may trigger inflammation and changes in the gut flora that can lead to issues in the digestive tract and beyond. Leaky gut has been linked to the development of several common chronic diseases such as autoimmune disorders (psoriasis, Hashimoto’s thyroid disease), chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, arthritis, allergies, acne and e...ven mental illness. But how do you know if you have leaky gut? Signs and symptoms may point to it, but it can also be a completely silent condition, meaning that you have no digestive symptoms. I can run a private lab test to TEST for leaky gut, giving you a definitive answer and allowing us to focus your treatment support. This is a simple at home test and results are usually back in 10 working days. Is it time to find out if leaky gut is contributing to your health issues? Message me to find out more. *please note this testing requires an appointment to initiate to assess whether this is the best option for you and an appointment go through results and their implications* #naturopath #guthealth #leakygut #autoimmunity #fibromyalgia #fatigue #allergies #psoriasis #femalehealth #margaretriver See more

18.01.2022 H a v e y o u ever been to the Doctor feeling tired, hormonal, bloated, to try and find out what is going on with your health, run a bunch of blood tests and return to the GP to be told everything is fine and normal? This is such a common experience of women that I see in my clinic. Why is this happening, when everything is clearly not in balance? Two reasons 1) GPs are looking for disease states that they can medicate and treat, your iron might be just in range, vitamin D... just in range, thyroid just in range - but to them that means no other action is needed, no drugs required- but you are not in optimal health! I am looking for optimal and ideal range, not just ‘in range’, not average, but instead I want for you balanced and perfectly in range- to do this I work under tighter reference ranges. 2) I am testing for different aspects, I run a full thyroid hormone panel (5 tests) most GPs run just one thyroid hormone indicator, I run cortisol (for adrenal function) zinc, vitamin d etc and I test a full hormone panel ON THE CORRECT DAY - a random hormone panel taken on a random day is missing VITAL information gained only when hormones are tested on the correct day. These changes in what and how blood is tested leads to the difference between ‘normal’ health and ‘optimal’ health Have you ever been told everything is fine and normal but you feel anything but? #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #womenshealth #hormonehealth #thyroidhealth #adrenalfatigue #guthealth #margaretriver See more

12.01.2022 Are you sabotaging your iron absorption without realizing? I work with so many women with low iron to help restore their levels and they are often surprised to find out that eating foods high in iron is not the only aspect we can control around iron levels. Did you know for example that tannins in black tea prevent absorption of iron. For this reason if you are low in iron don’t have a cuppa after dinner or with breakfast. - Coffee, red wine and colas also inhibit the abso...rption of iron and so should be avoided near meals. - Oxalates stop iron absorption. High sources of oxalates are found in rhubarb, spinach, strawberries, chocolate, wheat bran, nuts and beets. Please Note - even though spinach is very high in iron, the high oxalate content means approximately 1.4% of the iron in spinach is absorbed. Oxalates are reduced by cooking so you will absorb more iron from steamed spinach than raw. - Stomach acid is required to breakdown iron when it is ingested. If your stomach acid pH is not acidic enough the iron does not get absorbed. People taking antacids for reflux take note. - Phytates/Phytic Acid found in legumes, rice and other grains may bind to minerals such as zinc and iron and reduce iron absorption. Best to avoid eating alongside a iron rich meal or supplement or soak prior to eating in water with lemon juice or whey added to reduce phytate content. - Polyphenols found in foods such as tea, wine, chocolates, grapes, bilberries, cherries, apples, dark plums, blackberries and blueberries can inhibit absorption of non-haem (plant sources) of iron. - Protein malnutrition results in anaemia of various degrees of severity. Eating adequate amounts of protein is recommended. This is found in nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, meat. - Zinc and Calcium competes with iron for absorption. For this reason, zinc and calcium supplements are best taken away from an iron rich meal. Want to find out more about your optimal iron levels and how to achieve them? 11.01.2022 Blood test results are my happy place - don’t get me wrong listening to my client’s symptoms, feelings and experiences are vital too but blood test results for me are where it all comes together and my Treatment Plan is finalized- why? Because there are so many absolute gold nuggets of information in the blood tests that I run- I work with local open minded GPs who will run full testing panels for hormones, thyroid and adrenals and then I interpret incorporating functional markers- and explain all in depth - most GPs are looking for disease when they look at blood tests- I am looking at optimal function, prevention and optimal health- there’s quite a difference. Only when we measure can we fully manage #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #hormonehealth #fatigue #guthealth #holistichealth #margaretriver

11.01.2022 Part of me keeping my autoimmune disease (Hashimotos thyroiditis) in remission is avoiding gluten and dairy in my diet, as these can exacerbate antibodies and fuel the fire of the condition! So I loved this resource pointing out all the great high calcium natural alternatives to dairy- if you choose to avoid dairy as it aggravates your digestion, acne or hormones, or ethically doesn’t sit well it’s great to know what else can naturally give us needed nutrients- another great source if you do eat meat- bone broth- this vitamin and mineral powerhouse is high in bio available calcium #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #guthealth #dairyfree #autoimmunedisease #aip #thyroidhealing #hormonebalance #margaretriver

11.01.2022 Little by little, step by step, we can imagine, craft and create how we want to be...simple steps like taking a 1.5 litre water bottle, filling it up in the morning and making sure you drink it during the day suddenly transforms you into someone that drinks their water...I myself have been doing this this week as my water had dropped terribly with colder weather and I feel so much better for it! 11.01.2022 G u t B a c t e r i a can affect hormone levels in the two major ways. First, an overgrowth of certain anaerobic bacteria can produce high levels of an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase, which effects estrogen metabolism. High levels of this enzyme prevents proper excretion of estrogen, which can cause it to build up and recirculate in our bodies, causing estrogen dominance symptoms puffiness weight gain irritability ... bloating mood swings weepiness heavy period bleeds. Second, overgrowths of bad bacteria can produce high levels of endotoxins called lipopolysaccharides that produce inflammation in the body. This inflammation causes a host of problems in the body one of which is hormone dysfunction. Higher levels of inflammation have been found in women with PMS. If you have been told your hormone levels are ‘normal’ by your GP but you still have monthly negative hormone fluctuations ask these two questions 1) is your GP testing your hormones on day 21 where we will see if you are ovulating and producing good levels of progesterone, this will largely prevent hormone issues 2) could your gut bacteria be responsible for your issues and causing estrogen dominance? Most GPs do not have training in estrogen dominance and will not be looking for this in your blood test results, I am #naturopath #nutritionist #herbalist #femalehormones #pms #womenshealth #healthylifestyle #health #margaretriver See more

08.01.2022 Menstrual balance.....what causes PMS ? Changes in levels of the hormones progesterone, oestrogen and their metabolites (products these hormones convert into) largely cause PMS. Progesterone is like valium to the female brain, calming, positive, balancing and relaxing, so if our levels decline we really feel the negative affects. Decreased levels of the positive neurotransmitter (brain chemical) serotonin may also influence mood symptoms, this is important to remember as lo...w neurotransmitters can be at play just as much as hormone levels when it comes to PMS causes. The symptoms of PMS are wide ranging from mood swings, depression, anxiety, physical symptoms, fatigue, headaches, insomnia, digestive issues, sore breasts and bloating. How ‘bad’ your PMS is depends on (1) how quickly estrogen and progesterone are falling from day 21 of your cycle and (2) if progesterone is falling more rapidly than estrogen- in fact the level of estrogen if in excess in the body can really contribute to PMS symptoms (3) other factors such as levels of inflammation, blood sugar levels, levels of neurotransmitters (positive brain chemicals), health of the gut bacteria. Look out for more posts this week on how we can naturally support PMS and go to http://victoriamartinnaturopathics.com/pms-solutions-steps/ for more info #naturopath #herbalist #nutritionist #femalehealth #hormones #menstruation #pms #pmdd #guthealth #mentalhealth #margaretriver

07.01.2022 W E I G H T G A I N ...one of the most common observations that my clients make in their initial appointment is that they don’t feel that they have changed what they are eating, or exercise levels but that they are slowly putting on weight - there are many reasons WHY this happens and it is definitely not as simply resolved as eat different foods and exercise more (though often a review of daily meals and habits is very much in order!) - there are three key areas that I look... at in clinic to unlock fat burning and enable a return to a weight that the client wishes to be thyroid function (our metabolic furnace) adrenal function (our stress levels which can utterly dis-regulate weight loss) our female reproductive hormones - our estrogen levels in particular - address and balance these areas and combined with with a great nutrition and movement plan your weight will again find its set point that you are happy with.
