25.01.2022 A message for our urban gardeners and indoor plant lovers It's time to rotate your soil and feed your plants. If your plants are in pots or raised garden beds, its highly likely that they are in desperate need of a feed. ... If you have noticed that your plants growth has slowed, it may be because your plant has absorbed all the valuable nutrients and minerals from the soil. We often associate fertilising with large gardens or farms BUT its just as important to fertilise your indoor plants and urban gardens. Our top tips to keep you plants healthy: 1 Purchase a good quality potting mix. Quality potting mixes will generally contain a slow release fertiliser which will boost the nutrient levels of the soil. 2 Give your plants a regular feed. Every 2-4 weeks is ideal. 3 Move your plants around. Plants need and love the sun so change their position in your house or backyard at much as possible so that they are exposed to different levels of sun and light.

23.01.2022 We love love love this article, thanks for sharing Michael Naldrett. "A number of the new sightings were in locations where scientists did not previously know there was kelp, said Cayne Layton, a research fellow at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania."

21.01.2022 Multi species pasture, a great way to offer your livestock a diverse range of valuable nutrients. On a recent trip to Gippsland, we dropped in to see one of our dairy customers who has been using Vitec King Kelp on his pasture for the past 12 months. It was great to see so many different varieties thriving in his pasture. Planting multi species crops are a great way to add variety to your animals diet while also taking advantage of different growth cycles and growing seasons.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us, shared their knowledge with us, taken the time to teach us something new or just generally supported us on our journey. 19.01.2022 It's been a busy couple of weeks for the team at Vitec. But yes we are still open and we are still manufacturing at our facility in Carrum Downs. With autumn upon us, we have been busy manufacturing our liquid fertilisers and trying to keep up with demand. Our goal is to keep the factory in operation for as long as possible but if you are running low on any products, give us a shout and we will get you topped up as soon as possible.... Stay safe everyone! ps. we received a new shipment of kelp on Friday which always puts a big smile on our faces so we just had to share a couple of snaps

19.01.2022 We LOVED receiving this video last week!! Aerial spraying is a great way to reach hard to access paddocks or hilly areas of a property. Here we have a customer spraying Vitec Combo Plus on his pasture for an extra mid Spring boost

19.01.2022 Thanks for taking us into your sheep shed Jill Noble. For those that haven't heard us talk about our Trio, check out the below video and see how the team at Hallston Valley Farm use our Trio on their farm

19.01.2022 GROWTH - Part 1 of 3 So how does it grow For the kelp plant to grow, it secures itself, via its holdfast, to rocks on the ocean floor. When rough and powerful seas hit, the kelp is dislodged (ie the holdfast breaks away from the rocks) and washes up on the beach. Approximately 5-10% of kelp washes up onto the beach with the remaining kelp being pushed back out to sea. ... Kelp forests can be found anywhere from 2m 20m below the oceans surface and thrive in the cold water of Bass Strait. Kelp comes in many colours, shapes and sizes. The colour variance is often due to the level of sun exposure that the plant has experienced, and the length of the kelp blades are directly linked to the age of the plant. Kelp typically grows at a rate of 10-14 cm per day. The kelp blades are extremely thick and leathery, unlike many of the common seaweeds found at local beaches across Australia.

18.01.2022 Hats off to John and Jenny for their progressive thinking and regenerative approach to farming! When embarking on a regenerative journey, its important to remember that of doesnt happen overnight. At field days, we often hear people say that they have given it a go. When we enquire further, we learn that they have tried something once or twice and have then decided that organic or regenerative principles wont work for them. Regenerative farming isnt about short term results, its about long term gains.

17.01.2022 We speak to a lot of people about how to improve soil health so this short video caught our attention. Did you know that "for every 1% increase in soil organic matter, the soil can hold 20,000 more gallons of water per acre?? We’ve been following Rodale Institute for a few years now, definitely worth a follow and love hearing about all their research projects

16.01.2022 Sorry you havent heard from us for a while, we have been incredibly busy filling your orders and working on a number of exciting projects. For those that have enquired, yes we are still open and we are still manufacturing all of our products from our facility in Carrum Downs. While we have implemented a number of precautions inline with the Victorian government requirements, we are still able to operate to support our clients, particularly our farming clients. ... We look forward to share the projects that we have been working on with you all over the coming weeks. Stay safe everyone.

16.01.2022 With Spring knocking on the door, its a great time to start thinking about how you will feed your plants and soil as the warmer weather approaches. With the cooler months behind us, where plant growth slows or becomes dormant, we often see large growth spurts in Spring, as the soil temperature rises and the amount of sunlight for photosynthesis increases. Spring has also traditionally been the time of year where we top up the nutrients available and feed our plants. ...When making your feed selection this year, we recommend adding a seaweed and/or fish based fertiliser to the mix. Seaweed and fish based products are generally applied to the foliage which makes the nutrients instantly available to the plant to take up, resulting in improved growth and overall plant health. Did you know that while we recommend applying Vitec fertilisers to plant foliage, they can also be applied as a soil booster or as part of seed inoculation.

15.01.2022 Lets talk about free choice minerals. At Vitec, we are big believers in having free choice minerals available for livestock. One of the benefits of having separate minerals on offer for your animals is that they are able to take up the specific mineral that they are lacking in. Deficiencies can be due to the time of year, the pasture or feed, the soil health, the season ect. ... One of the major benefits of having a free choice mineral station, is that the minerals are not mixed with fillers such as salt or molasses. By removing these fillers the animal is able to correctly self-regulate their mineral uptake without over indulging on salt or molasses. We recommend the following minerals in your free choice station: Mineralised Salt Seaweed Meal Dolomite Lime Sulphur Copper Check out some of the free choice stations that we have seen over the years

15.01.2022 Did you know that it can be extremely beneficial to take a multi facet approach when planing your fertiliser regimem, particular when it comes to new plants. Plants can experience stress when being replanted or moved so it is a great idea to provide them with both a slow release fertiliser, like the Vitec Kelp Meal and a quick release fertiliser such as one of the Vitec liquid fertilisers. This approach ensures that your plants have access to vital nutrients to help them adjust to their new surroundings, while having access to longer term reserves to help them thrive If you are located in NSW, be sure to head into Australian Native Landscapes ANL to check out the range or head to www.vitec.com.au for more information

13.01.2022 Sheep producers are being warned to keep an eye out for iodine deficient lambs as large amounts of rainfall strip iodine out of soils. A very timely article as we head into lambing and believe it or not, kelp is incredibly high in iodine. So, if you notice any of the symptoms listed in the article, try adding a bit of kelp to your lamb/sheeps diet.

12.01.2022 With Spring knocking on the door, it's a great time to start thinking about how you will 'feed' your plants and soil as the warmer weather approaches. 10.01.2022 While we post a lot about our farming community, were also really proud of our loyal gardening community. Heres a progress shot from one very special lady, my Nan - Jill Toohey. Nan has been an avid gardener for many years now and has always used a seaweed or fish based fertiliser on her garden. While we might be a little bias, her garden has been looking particularly good over the last 2 years ... To our gardening community, keep the pictures coming - we absolutely love seeing your gardens

10.01.2022 Check these beauties out, all the way from Thailand We did a shout out a couple of weeks back asking people to send us their progress shots and this one hit our inbox. Check out the fruit size

10.01.2022 Soil testing. How often do you get your soil tested? Or how often do you grab a shovel and head out to the paddock to do your own visual tests? Most of the time when we ask these questions, the answer is not often enough.... Visual tests, allow you to observe things such as the worm count, the root system of the plant, the soil structure and soil composition. We often take the time to do product trials on different paddocks or properties but fail to head back out to check the results. Visual tests are a quick, cost effective (all you need is a shovel) and easy way to monitor whats working well and monitor the impact that different products are having on your soil. Lab based testing can also be a great way to monitor and more formally record how your soils are responding to various factors such as inputs, the weather and other environmental factors. Lab based testing is great for identifying soil deficiencies both biological and nutritional. Ideally lab based testing is conducted on an annual basis while visual tests are performed more frequently. If its been a while between test, get in touch and we can arrange for a soil kit to be sent out. We partner with SWEP as they are an independent laboratory who specialise in soil and water testing.

10.01.2022 We absolutely loved this episode of The Sheep Show Podcast. From apple cider vinegar to seaweed. Free choice minerals to the use of vitamin C. Not to mention the master herself Pat Colby, this episode has it all. We highly recommend checking it out!!

06.01.2022 Check this out We have seen a fair few liquid supplement dispensers in our time but we think this one is pretty impressive. The set up below is used to dispense Min-Kel while the cows are in the dairy. This type of set up makes it incredibly easy to administer liquid supplements such as Min-Kel and ensures that the supplements are readily available for when the cows need a little extra boost

05.01.2022 Melbourne has absolutely turned on the weather today and we can't wait to get out into the garden We're currently in the process of building a new garden bed. We're planning on giving the soil a good hit of the Vitec King Kelp to get the microbes moving and then we will give all the plants a hit of the Vitec Liquid Fish to give them a boost and ensure they have readily available nutrients to help establish themselves. Be right back, we're off to enjoy the sunshine

05.01.2022 COLLECTION & PROCESSING Part 2 of 3 Durvillaea potatorum or as its more commonly known Bull Kelp, becomes storm cast after the plant has been dislodge from the ocean floor. On a daily basis the harvesters, or Kelpies as they are commonly known on the Island, collect the kelp from the shoreline. Check out the pics below. The collection of kelp on King Island is highly regulated by the Tasmania government ensuring that the kelp is sustainably collected. There are strict r...ules around how many kelpie licenses can be issued and how the kelp is to be harvested ie kelp cannot be removed from the ocean, it must be storm cast. Once collected the kelp is hung up to naturally dry for approximately 2 weeks, depending on the weather conditions. After two weeks the kelp is broken into small pieces and placed in a furnace to further extract the moisture from the plant. Once the moisture level reaches a given level, the kelp is again broken into smaller pieces and bagged for transportation.

05.01.2022 We're absolutely loving seeing the pictures rolling in from Australian Native Landscapes ANL. 02.01.2022 Regenerative agriculture - it's a BIG yes from us!! If you have a couple of minutes check out the article below

02.01.2022 UTILISATION Part 3 of 3 So, what is kelp actually used for? Around the world, kelp can be found in a number of different industries; be it textiles, food, manufacturing or our favourite agriculture.... Most of the kelp from King Island is sent overseas, where the alginates are extracted from the plant and then used as a natural stabiliser in products such as syrups, sauces, creams and lotions. At Vitec, we use our kelp in two ways: 1. As a stock or animal feed additive/supplement 2. As a primary ingredient in our liquid fertilisers and soil conditioners. Agricultural benefits of kelp: When it comes to livestock, kelp is the multivitamin of the animal supplement or nutrition world. Kelp is naturally high in iodine which helps with the absorption of all other vitamins and minerals. Supplementing with kelp all year round is a great way to help your animals absorb minerals that they may not have access to through their regular pasture. In times where pasture may be lacking nutritional value, providing kelp to animals is a great way to top up their diet. When it comes to soil health, kelp is highly effective at stimulating the biological activity in the soil, this can be important to help recover and revitalise the soil, especially if synthetic fertilisers and other chemicals have been frequently used. Kelp can also be extremely effective when regenerating the soil after a natural disasters such as fire or a long term drought. Liquid kelp helps the soils uptake of moister and can also provide many nutrients and trace elements for regeneration.
