25.01.2022 The Nyikina Mangala Rangers have been busy this week conducting cool season aerial & ground burning operations. The Grant Range was the focus for the aerial burning with the aim to protect the Black Footed Rock Wallaby habitat from late season hot fires that frequently occur in this area. A large fire scar was burnt around the base of the range using the DFES helicopter. A total of 750 incendiary caps were dropped to achieve this goal. As a result there now is a fire break ...around the range which will help stop those late season hot fires. The ground burning was in and around the Camballin Community to protect homes and critical Infrastructure such as communications towers and town water supply. Fire mitigation is very important work the Rangers carry out in the cool season. Cultural knowledge tells us that cool season fire reduces the risk of late season hot fires which do so much damage to country and community. The Nyikina Mangala Rangers would like to thank our partners #DFES & #WWF for helping make these burns possible. Nyikina Mangala Rangers Caring for Country.

14.01.2022 On 27/10/2020 Yimardoo Warra Nyikina Mangala Rangers travelled out to Yarri Yarri to do an asset protection burn. The rangers spent the afternoon putting in fire breaks to ensure the burn could be controlled and completed safely. It was a great result and not even some overnight rain slowed the completion of the burn the next morning. The rangers felt good leaving, knowing the community would be safe from any wildfires from lightning in the lead up to the wet season. 10.01.2022 RANGERS CATCH BIG CROC The Nyikina Mangala rangers have succeeded in catching a four-metre crocodile that's been hanging around Snake Creek in the southern K...imberley in recent months. Head ranger Jeremiah Green says the crocodile has been seen regularly at the popular fishing spot near Camballin. "The croc has been humbugging people when they go out fishing, and stalking them," he told ABC Kimberley. "He comes up close sometimes, and even the tourists were getting bothered - one lost a dog a couple of years ago." The Parks and Wildlife Service helped the team install a trap in February, which the rangers then baited and monitored. This week the male reptile literally took the bait. Ranger coordinator Damian Giles said it turned into a good training exercise. "The Parks and Wildlife service came out this morning and assisted the rangers to pull the crocodile out," he said. "He's gone off for retirement now, to the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park in Broome." "The people that use that river on a regular basis I think are glad to have him out of there, because there are children playing on the waters edge sometimes, which is not ideal but it does happen." The Nyikina Mangala rangers are now focused on trapping another worrisome crocodile hanging around at a Fitzroy River crossing nearby. 04.01.2022 The Nyikina Mangala Rangers have again succeeded in catching a 4.1 meter saltwater crocodile over the weekend that's been hanging around Myroodah Crossing, an old swimming spot in the Walalakoo determination area. The Nyikina Mangala rangers Albert Watson, William Watson, Raymond Charles, Darren Green, Hottoe Skeen and Head Ranger, Jeremiah Green (Modra) had just moved the trap last week based on their extensive knowledge of the area and of seasonal croc movements. With t...he aid of the Parks and Wildlife services team, the Rangers got the affectionately named ‘Myroodah ‘ out this morning to move to the crocodile sanctuary in Broome.
