25.01.2022 Westgate Biodiversity: Bili Nursery & Landcare (WBBNL) is the amalgamated page for the former Friends of Westgate Park and St. Kilda Indigneous Nursery Co-op. We operate in two locations: Westgate Park and Bili Nursery. Westgate Park is accessible from Todd Rd, Wharf Rd and Lorimer St. At Westgate Park you will see the amazing revegetation and biodiversity that comes from our hard work. Seed and cuttings are taken from Westgate Park to grow at Bili Nursery.... Bili Nursery is at 525 Williamstown Road. Here we propagate and grow the plants that grow in Westgate Park. Bili Nursery supplies plants to the City of Port Phillip. We also have a retail section.

23.01.2022 Happy international wattle day! We propagate and grow 15 species of Acacia at Westgate Park and Bili Nursery, ranging from the small coastal wattle to the giant blackwood. Did you know all our local wattles are edible and nutritious bushfood?... 23.01.2022 Many people enjoying their exercise time at Westgate Park on this gorgeous day. Or perhaps they've seen Gardening Australia's fab feature on the Park, screening again at 1.30 today, or on iview if you missed it.

23.01.2022 See if you can spot any of these in Westgate Park. We'd love to see any pictures.

20.01.2022 Do take your lockdown exercise in Westgate Park if you live within 5km. There are so many parts of the park to get to know. Late afternoon over the freshwater lake.

19.01.2022 Guess this plant! The answer is: Mentha australis aka River mint! Never grown any edible native plants, but keen to try? Mentha australis is the perfect plac...e to start. In the wild, you’ll find it growing in most regions of the country, often around rivers, bogs and other damp, shaded places. In your garden, it’s an easy straight swap for exotic mint. Try planting it under the tap in a pot so it can soak up the extra moisture, and use the leaves anywhere you’d normally use mint; salads, teas, sauces and baking. by Westgate Biodiversity: Bili Nursery & Landcare See more

19.01.2022 Westgate Park will be featured on tonight's Gardening Australia on ABC TV. Tune in at 7.30 or catch it at 1.30 pm on Sunday or on iView. Filmed in the Park in December, the episode features interviews and the revegetation work in the Park.

15.01.2022 Allocasuarina littoralis - also known as the Black Sheoak - is a small to medium sized tree found along the coastline of eastern Australia. It has an upright habit with soft, needle-like dark green leaves and showy red flowers which bloom dioeciously in spring. A. littoralis is an icon of Australian beaches, and when mass-planted you can hear the needles ‘singing’ in the wind. This species grows to a height of 4-8 metres, spreads 2-4 metres wide, and is suited to a full sun/s...emi-shaded position in well-drained soil. We have tubestock of this hardy and drought-tolerant tree available to the public in our nursery for $3.50 each. . . . #allocasuarina #allocasuarinalittoralis #sheoak #bilinursery #westgatepark #portmelbourne #yarra #yarrariver #portmelbournebeach #droughttolerant #nativenursery #floraofvictoria #australia See more

09.01.2022 We're right behind this year's #WorldEnvironmentDay theme: 'reimagine, recreate, restore' since it's at the heart of our work and purpose. And the tag line fits too: get active, not anxious. Westgate Park has been transformed by volunteers over more than 20 years getting active to reimagine, recreate and restore the Park.

09.01.2022 At 11 am tomorrow, on instagram live.

09.01.2022 Did you know that urban wetlands can act as pollutant traps, provide cooling benefits, and are critical to the conservation and recovery of many species found i...n cities? On #WorldWetlandsDay we're sharing a new report summarising CAUL’s research covering the role or urban wetlands in threatened species conservation, the threats that affect urban wetland habitats, possible actions to restore and enhance wetlands in cities and towns, and the importance of urban wetlands as Indigenous places. https://lnkd.in/gHzXiVT Image: A neglected drainage ditch in central Melbourne converted into a chain of biodiversity-friendly wetlands. 09.01.2022 Fascinating fungi in the Park at the moment after the rain - easy to spot amongst the mulch as there are so many, and so many different kinds. You may see this stinkhorn Clathrus ruber Red cage.

08.01.2022 Hardenbergia violacea - known commonly as purple coral pea - is one of our scrambling climbers native to south-east Australia. It is well known and adored for its displays of violet pea flowers in winter and spring time. H. violacea grows widespread in open forests and woodland, and is suited to a variety of soil types and conditions. It can easily be trained to climb fence lines or trail as a clumping groundcover. We have tubestock of this hardy perennial available to the pu...blic in our nursery for just $3.50 each. . . . #hardenbergia #hardenbergiaviolacea #bilinursery #westgatepark #portmelbourne #yarra #yarrariver #portmelbournebeach #droughttolerant #nativenursery #floraofvictoria See more

08.01.2022 Statement from Lyn Allison, President of Westgate Biodiversity: Bili Nursery & Landcare We are very sad to tell you that Tony Flude died peacefully on Sunday morning after a long illness. Tony was deeply committed to the work of the Friends of Westgate Park/Westgate Biodiversity and he has left a very substantial environmental legacy in the Park. For 20 years he was the Park’s greatest advocate and skilled organiser. He put in countless hours of hard work. He raised millions... of dollars in grants to be spent in the Park and implemented many major projects that improved and extended it. Tony mobilised staff and thousands of volunteers in the enormous task of revegetation. He worked alongside them, mulching, weeding and planting, turning this neglected park into the very biodiverse gem it is today. Please share your memories of Tony. In sadness.

04.01.2022 Murnong or Yam daisies were once widely found across inner Melbourne, as the mainstay of indigenous agriculture. Here we show two of Melbournes local species. Sadly theyve largely dissapeared - delicious to sheep and now often removed by well meaning gardeners who confuse them for Dandelions. You can buy these from our nursery for $3.50 each, with three species available.... #murnong #yamdaisy #bushfoods #bushtucker #westgate #westgatepark #fishermansbend #portmelbourne #bilinursery #nativenursery #nativefood #indigenous #rareplants #australia #wildflowers #wildflowersofinstagram #portphillipbay #yarrariver #yam

03.01.2022 Following this exciting project with interest for its application to sites such as Westgate Park.

03.01.2022 How perfect for Gardening Australia's feature on Westgate Park to air during #ReconciliationWeek 2021. Westgate Park contributes in these ways: Knowing the land on which you are growing Learning about growing some local native plants from your area Learning the history of the gardens and parklands we know and love

02.01.2022 Black wattle is one of our toughest and fastest growing local pioneer trees! Edible seeds and sap and a deep root system that stabilises while feeding nitrogen back into the soil. You can find this species in Westgate Park fulfilling it's niche as a hill topper, stabilising the soil on top of raised areas in the woodland. Did you know this species is one of the worlds top ten weeds (outside Australia) and holds the record for the only species capable of growing as a tree at u...nder 100 mls of rainfall per year! #acacia #westgatebridge #westgatepark #fishermansbend #floraofvictoria #acaciamearnsii #bilinursery #wattle #birdwatching #nursery #nativeplants #nativefood #bushfoods #floraofmelbourne #portmelbourne
