25.01.2022 This is what bird migration looks like in Europe. Imagine what it was like 50 years ago when numbers were double what they are now? What a spectacle. This is Earth in action, animals doing what they do best.

24.01.2022 Blue Whales that migrate from the Banda Sea in Indonesia each year, arrive in coastal Victoria for the summer. The first one just appeared off Portland in Western Vic this week.

23.01.2022 My sincerest condolences to the Rumney family. Like everyone, I have the fondest memories of time spent with John. I am grateful to have been able to introduce Linda and John to my children earlier this year (both aspiring ocean lovers) as we crossed paths in Brisbane airport. Quite a few years ago now, I had the pleasure of co-leading a trip to the Coral Sea and here is a little clip of John talking about Tawny Nurse Sharks. John, you will be missed. Thanks for all the good times, your wisdom and that everyone may continue to learn from your enthusiasm and relentless love of the ocean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLarcH49icQ

23.01.2022 This webinar is for you to meet our host Caroline Densley and friends from the Cocos Keeling Islands and Christmas Islands, before you lead a Q&A and we answer your questions. Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands are the most western part of Australia. Cocos is a chain of 27 islands that form around the ring of an extinct volcano and offer the quintessential tropical holiday destination with gorgeous white sandy beaches, most of which are uninhabited and offer the quintessential tropical paradise vacation. Christmas Island is a world famous Australian outpost in the Indian Ocean surrounded by jagged cliffs, punctuated by coral beaches, feeding on to tropical reefs teeming with marine life. Most famous for its 90+ species of crabs, like the Christmas Island Red Crab and the Robber Crab, the bird life on Christmas Island cannot be missed either. Birds are everywhere all the time! Christmas Island boasts one of the most beautiful birds on the planet the golden morph of the White-tailed Tropicbird, or Golden Bosun. Their mesmerising aerial acrobatics and distinctive call can be heard all around the island.

20.01.2022 The sad thing about this situation is that it is not a 'freak' accident. It is predictable and avoidable. Swimming with Humpback Whales is dangerous if done poorly. The animals get very excited and there has to be a policy in place and a suitably-qualified observer and Captain who understand whale behaviour and take people out of the water well before anything can go wrong. Fortunately the woman is safe but there will hopefully be an inquiry and the realisation that whale swims can't be done 'ad hoc' and require careful planning and meticulous risk assessment. https://7news.com.au//women-crushed-between-two-humpback-w Pete Garbett

08.01.2022 What's the point of Long-tailed Ducks? Whenever I see a wildlife spectacle, I’m always asking myself this question or I often get asked the same: what is this animal doing here? In this blog, I’m taking a fresh look at Long-tailed Duck, a beautiful bird that congregates in northwest European coasts in winter. https://simonmustoe.blog/whats-the-point-of-long-tailed-du/

03.01.2022 Calling it a 'road' is massively understating the importance of this incredible region of Victoria. This quote was on the wall of an apartment on the Great Ocean Road and Wordsworth might have easily been talking about the Great Ocean Road. Two Voices are there; one is of the Sea, One of the Mountains; each a mighty Voice William Wordsworth, 1888 One of the roads to get there winds along a glorious coastline and day-trippers might get to see the Twelve Apostles at midda...y but for the discerning visitor, sunrise and sunset are the times to visit. An overnight stay on Cape Otway gives you the chance to explore the ancient Gondwanan forests and catch glimpse of the rare carnivorous snail. You can paddle with platypus, kayak with seals or take one of the world-famous walks. There are majestic cliff-top vistas at the far western-end to rival anything you'll see elsewhere and a ground-breaking wildlife rehabilitation centre and accommodation. There are numerous escarpment views to die and in Warrnambool, you can seek time with Emus and Koalas in the depths of a flooded volcano run by the local Aboriginal group Worn Gundij. There's the Flagstaff Hill experience, seasonal whale-watching and an increasingly large number of boutique distilleries and food establishments to keep you occupied. You don't know the Great Ocean Road and its hidden secrets until you've left the road. See more

01.01.2022 Here is a blog I write about how Cuvier's Beaked Whales manage to hold their breath for nearly 4 hours, along with some photos of these extraordinary creatures.

01.01.2022 Simon Mustoe of Wildiaries is being interviewed tomorrow morning at 9:30AM (don't forget daylight savings) on the subject of how it's possible a Cuvier's Beaked Whale managed to dive for over three and a half hours on a single breath! Listen online any time https://www.rrr.org.au/explore/podcasts/radio-marinara #apnea #freediving #beakedwhales #whale #cetaceans #diving
