25.01.2022 Wired for Nature. Discover the science behind our evolutionary need for nature...why and how it frames our physiological and psychological well-being.

25.01.2022 Where will this path take you? We all need a sense of mystery in our daily lives: research has shown that gardens and wild places can pique our curiosity safely, unlike the less positive uncertainty often engendered in the built environment. Why is mystery good for us? It dampens negative ruminations and enhaces our sense of delight by activating part of the brain linked to pleasure.

21.01.2022 SBS INSIGHT On tonights show: a compelling discussion on the effects of anxiety. It was great to hear that, together with clinical psychological help, some of the participants described the benefits they experienced from some simple nature fixes: pets and potplants!

17.01.2022 Air, land, sun and water. Mix them altogether and you have the genesis of all that sustains us. This photo from NSWs South Coast was taken just months ago before the firestorms consumed it this week. Even the microbiota of the soil - the nursery of plant life - was burnt to a depth beyond which it will struggle to regenerate. We say were "gutted" by this tragedy; an apt word as the means of survival (these ecosystems) for us and so many other species is being eviscerated. #losingnature #nature #fires #whyweneednature #nswsouthcoast

16.01.2022 Autumn magic by night. Branching patterns like these exist in our bodies vascular system; in the veins of marble; in the arrangement of galaxies. Patterns of purpose: beautiful and pervasive, you just need to take the time to look. #whyweneednature #biophilia #nature #autumn #mandlebrot #mentalhealthawareness #maths #wiredfornature

15.01.2022 Design tips No2 for Iso: cluster forms and complementary scale as in these air plants and succulents working together! Perfect indoor plant mates, enjoying bright shade, cramped conditions and a negligent owner

13.01.2022 Rapture. Its a real thing. Need persuasion to get you out there and literally embrace the things that are good for you? Consider this: animals invariably have a cognitive program for seeking out whats good for them whilst we humans often disregard those nature cues or fail to recognize them, desensitized as we are by the effect of urbanization and detachment from the natural world. 09.01.2022 Getting it into perspective. Research tells us that spending time in the outdoors resets our biological need to be "framed" in a natural environment. The Earth is bigger, we seem smaller, and our pre-occupation with ourselves and our problems is re-set to the size it should be.

06.01.2022 Design some variety into your environment...the best tonic for the stuck at home blues: + varying leaf shapes colours and textures + create foreground, midground and background to open up varying perspectives, shadows, darkness and light + alternate heights and widths of plants... + flower colours - but not too many - keep them complementary + a few bits of garden art to create focal points + keep the look layered; its easy on the eye and avoids the chaos of too much variation Designing for isolation is sadly under-utilised but the benefits can be significant. Subtle and coherent visual stimulation relieves monotony and alleviates mental fatigue without us even being aware its happening. Give it a go! You cant change whats happening out there in C-19 world (well, except by staying at home) but you can re-arrange whats in your own little home world. #wiredfornature #plantsmakepeoplehappy #gardens #plants #gardendesign #whyweneednature #environmentalpsychology #northernbeachessydney

06.01.2022 Will we see this in Australia soon? Doctors in other countries are writing nature dosage scripts while the research keeps coming in about the benefits. Wake up Australia. 02.01.2022 Last of the Bleeding Hearts for this summer. It will die and shrivel and I will cut it back ruthlessly trusting with all my own heart that it will bloom again next summer. It hasnt let me down in 20 years. Trust the process folks. We will bloom again. #whywelovenature #whyweneednature #nature... #biophilia #wiredfornature #getoutside #grow See more
