24.01.2022 Bonnie Millen and Robert Altamore interview by local ABC Radio about IDay and COVID response. Bonnie was excellent! Image Description: Woman with her hair pulled back in a ponytail, wearing glasses and a top with a blue square pattern, sitting in front of a microphone at ABC Canberra radio studio.

23.01.2022 Apple has been a leader in making built-in accessibility features that are robust and more consistently enjoyable to use than what one finds built in on many other platforms, says Chancey Fleet, vice president of the National Federation of the Blind of New York. However, we are still a minority, and we experience the subprime experience of a minority. Even the companies that are doing the best could do more.

22.01.2022 The Disability Royal Commission highlights the trauma experienced by First Nation mothers with disabilities who have their children taken away ... 22.01.2022 For many of us, mindfulness is more than an individualistic way of reducing stress. As Thich Nhat Hanh teaches, making peace begins within ourselves, but contemplation leads to compassion, and compassion involves taking action to address suffering. This work to transform the world through social, political, economic, or environmental change is activism.

20.01.2022 Remarkably, workers got more work done while working fewer hours. Sales and profits grew. Employees spent less time commuting, and they were happier. Barnes says there were other, unexpected benefits: It narrowed workplace gender gaps. Women who typically took more time off for caregiving suddenly had greater flexibility built into their schedule. Men also had more time to help with their families, Barnes says.

20.01.2022 Samantha Connor and Nicole Lee discuss the many barriers facing people with disabilities who wish to speak to the Royal Commission...

17.01.2022 It was compassion that introduced me to my inner-light and it was a total meet-cute! Armed with compassion, I force-felt it every time I approached a challenge. I stopped trying harder and started trying smarter. When it felt difficult to accomplish something I thought: it’s ok that I find this hard, my brain is not neurotypical, and then I thought, is there a way I can play to my strengths?

14.01.2022 We are extending our Board Nominations until COB Wednesday, 9th December 2020. Apply now!!

10.01.2022 Rights and Inclusion Australia are holding a number of forums on December 2 to discuss housing for people with disabilities and people with psychosocial disabilities... This is the link for the afternoon session for people with psychosocial disabilities and their carers. I will post a separate link for the morning session for people disability and carers.

10.01.2022 What the language of vulnerability often fails to capture is why some people are exposed to certain risks more than others. In describing people as ‘vulnerable’, we obscure the various structural factors underpinning vulnerability. Vulnerability facilitates the status quo. Great article by Nicole Lee on the problems with framing women with disabilities as inherently ‘vulnerable’ https://womensagenda.com.au//were-not-vulnerable-by-virtu/... 09.01.2022 Today’s plugged-in, chatty world seems built to make us uncomfortable with silence. The pressures of our always-on culture make me feel like I should be forever filling downtime with conversation, music, or a podcast or lecture. Relishing silence for long periods of time feels lazy and time-wasting.

06.01.2022 We are very excited to welcome Kat Reed to the WWDACT team as our new CEO! Congratulations Kat Reed

05.01.2022 If anyone knows a young person in a caring role, Anglicare chatted with us last week about their young carers social group. Get in touch with them at CYCLOPS - Anglicare Youth Services if you have any questions.

03.01.2022 He thinks adults with ADHD fall through the cracks because people assume if you have the condition you’ll get diagnosed with it as a child, or that you’ll grow out of it anyway. He also thinks some people don’t view ADHD as a real thing. The public discussion around ADHD "did dissuade me from looking for a diagnosis," he says, "because I thought, Oh, that’s not much of a real thing.
