04.01.2022 YESTERDAY WE WERE WRONG The past couple of days have been extremely windy in Melbourne, bringing down and damaging a lot of trees. We attended 5 emergency call outs yesterday, and undertook 2 urgent jobs today. When we attended one of the jobs yesterday, we were asked to assess the stability of a Southern mahogany that had shed a large limb onto the neighbours property. Full disclosure, we werent selling advice, and it was made clear that the advice was just an opinion ...and not consultancy or a report. The tear out had directly impacted the union of a secondary limb, and its integrity was in question. We recommended that our customer engaged our services to remove the compromised limb, and we recommended that the tree be removed in the near future but that the stability of the head was okay for now. We judged this due to the amount of holding wood that remained in tact, where the original branch had torn from. Fast forward to today, we attended the site and began work. It immediately became apparent upon entering the canopy, that the windy conditions were picking up again and the movement in the damaged part of the tree was way too much. Basically we were wrong initially, and in making an informed decision from the ground, sometimes it happens. We informed the client that our opinion on the best solution had changed, and that we did in fact think that a full weight reduction should be carried out, to make sure that the tree did not fail again. This was about 3x the amount of work than had been quoted, but we didnt charge a penny extra. The points of this post are 1. Dont be afraid to admit when youre wrong, we all get it wrong occasionally, just own it and fix it. 2. Be accountable. Our customer, upon our advise, only expected to be paying a certain amount. Its not fair to spring an extra charge on the job, for something that was misjudged on our part. The tree in question is now weight reduced, awaiting full removal.
