22.01.2022 On this day 39 years ago (7th July 1978) the first-nuclear powered warship to visit Darwin, the USS Bainbridge, anchors in Darwin Harbour on a six-day goodwill visit. Bainbridge was commissioned in 1962, and served for over 30 years in the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, and Middle East before being decommissioned in 1996. #WarShip #Darwin #DarwinHarbour #DarwinRSL100 #OnThisDay #DarwinHistory #USSBainbridge Darwin Harbour Darwin, Northern Territory Northern Territory

22.01.2022 Sidney James Lauder worked for the Postmaster General, and before enlisting into the AIF was a member of the Cable Guard, which was a local militia unit raised to defend the Overseas Telegraph Cable: at the outbreak of war there was a real fear of a raid by a German warship on the cable station in Darwin, which was the key link between Australia and the rest of the Empire. He then joined the AIF underage in 1915, and served at Gallipoli in the later stages of that campaign be...fore going to the Western Front, where he died at the age of 20 on 30th October 1917. He rests in the Aeroplane Cemetery. A picture of his grave is attached. 19.01.2022 Christ Church Cathedral has two memorial plaques from World War One. They are in memory of Lieutenant Charles Lloyd Herbert and Private Sidney James Lauder (who died at the Battle of Ypres in October 1917). They were both members of the congregation at Christ Church and the memorial plaques were first dedicated in June 1918 (for Lt Herbert) and August 1918 (for Pte Lauder). This (we believe) makes them Darwin’s oldest war memorials. The old Christ Church survived the Bombing ...of Darwin on 19 February 1942. From 1942 to 1945 Christ Church became the garrison church, and in 1944 the Old Porch was added to the church. Sometime between 1944 and 1974 the memorial plaques were moved into the Old Porch, which meant that they survived undamaged during Cyclone Tracy. The cyclone knocked down the original church built in 1902, but spared the Old Porch which still stands today. These plaques will be rededicated on Wednesday 13 September 2017 and installed inside the new Cathedral. The centenary of the deaths of these brave young men occurs this year together with the 100 years anniversary of Darwin RSL. 18.01.2022 Did you know yesterday was Australian National Flag Day? It's never too late to celebrate! In 1996, the Governor-General, Sir William Deane, issued a proclamation recognising the annual commemoration of Australian National Flag Day, to be held on 3 September. Flag Day celebrations had been occurring in Sydney since 1985. They were initiated by the vexillographer John Christian Vaughan to commemorate the first occasion when the flag was flown in 1901.... On Flag Day, ceremonies are held in schools, major centres, and the Governor-General, Governors and some politicians attend or release statements to the media. #DarwinRSL100 #AustralianFlagDay #OnThisDay #DidYouKnow Darwin RSL Inc. 17.01.2022 Charles Lloyd Herbert was the oldest son of Charles Edward Herbert (1860-1929), who was at various times member for the Northern Territory in the South Australian Parliament, Resident (administrator) of the Northern Territory, and a Judge both in the Northern Territory and in Papua. Charles enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) in 1915: he had previously served as an Officer in the police in Papua. He was also remembered in Darwin due to his family connections with... the Northern Territory. He died on 4th October 1917 at the age of 28: unfortunately in the subsequent course of the Battle of Ypres his grave was lost, and his memorial is now an inscription on the Menin Gate.
