19.01.2022 We are grateful to each of our followers - thank you for your encouragement, support and enthusiasm! Thank you for helping us reach 2000 followers! We love our work here at the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater and hearing from you all makes it lots of fun! We recently celebrated our 31st birthday and are busily working to ensure the next 30+ years so we can continue our amazing conservation work. We're so happy to have you join us here, or in our many other activities, to ...share our adventures! For more information about our work or to make a donation to support our on-ground programmes please visit: www.helmetedhoneyeater.org.au Photo credit: the amazing Andrew Silcocks

13.01.2022 Vale Darcy Duggan With deep sadness and heartfelt condolences to Darcy's family, we celebrate the incredible life of Darcy Duggan, who passed away on Saturday from a rare form of Leukaemia. Darcy was a true (and hilarious!) gentleman, a brilliant ecologist and natural resource practitioner, a much-loved community member and an indefatigable advocate for the environment. Many Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater members, volunteers and supporters will have met Darcy 'along the t...rack'. Darcy's legacy itself is like that of a forest: he inspired and educated so many people who have, in turn, become active advocates for the environment. And may it continue in that way. Thanks for the memories, Darcy. You will be so missed.

09.01.2022 News just in - well, 11.40am in my Inbox - like many of you in metro Melbourne, we've been watching and waiting for advice of when volunteers can return to the public estate in metro Melbourne, and under what conditions. ANNOUNCED: Parks Victoria have advised today that all volunteering can now recommence, provided the activity is permitted under the latest public health measures. STAY TUNED: The Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater staff and committee of management will provide further advice on how our volunteer programs will proceed in due course. Everyone's health and safety will be our primary concern as we welcome you back :) MEANTIME. Keep watching the Parks Vic COVID-19 Update page for any changes that may be announced as restrictions ease further at: https://www.parks.vic.gov.au//safety-in-na/covid-19-update

08.01.2022 Coming to 'a backyard' near you! The Annual Backyard Bird Count starts this Monday, 19th October until Sunday, 25th October. It's open to everyone and is a great opportunity to hone your powers of observation and see what beautiful birdlife exists in your 'own backyard'. Each year, BirdLife Australia holds the #AussieBirdCount, which asks Australians to get out into their backyards or local nature spots and record the birdlife they observe. This year's data will be compared ...with previous years' data to help reveal patterns of dispersal of species displaced by the 2019-20 bushfires. To register and find out more, visit: https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/ Have fun! :)

07.01.2022 Here at the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater HQ, for more than 30 years, we have been restoring habitat for the Helmeted Honeyeater and all the other creatures that share these threatened ecosystems. In recent years, many of our revegetation areas have been subject to drying, despite being in a swampy system...this year, the swamps are finally having a really good drink! Here are some of our revegetation plots - the plants we choose for habitat restoration all thrive in dyn...amic, flooded environments. We look forward to seeing these plants flourish and - hopefully - initiate natural recruitment in response to the floods! More nesting habitat for the Helmeted Honeyeater and great habitat for the Leadbeater's Possum (lowland genetics)! If you would like to support our habitat restoration work even during restrictions, please consider making a donation via our website: www.helmetedhoneyeater.org.au 100% of donations go to directly improving threatened species habitat and your support really makes a difference!
