22.01.2022 **This bushfire warning is no longer current please refer to the QFES Facebook page for updated information** STAY INFORMED: Fraser Island (K’gari) bushfire as ...at 9.45am Sun 29 Nov Bushfire warning level: ADVICE Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) are managing a bushfire on Fraser Island (K’gari). You need to keep up to date and decide what actions you will take if the situation changes. Currently as at 9.45am Sunday 29 November, a bushfire with two fronts is burning approximately five kilometres north of Kingfisher Bay Resort, and two kilometres west of Cathedrals on Fraser. Weather conditions will continue to deteriorate today, with increased smoke reducing visibility and air quality on Fraser Island (K’gari) and adjacent mainland areas. QFES and QPWS in conjunction with the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation are working to limit the spread of the fire and minimise environmental and cultural impacts. Travel to the island remains restricted. Residents, campers and visitors already on the island should limit their movements to within close proximity of where they are staying and avoid travelling on the inland tracks and roads. The following tracks are currently closed: Woralie Happy Valley Track Cornwalls Break Pile Valley Bennets Road For a full list of track closures and further information regarding travel restrictions and permit conditions go to www.parks.des.qld.gov.au. Properties are not under direct threat at this time. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately if you believe you or your property is under threat. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: Listen to your local radio station or visit the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website for regular updates. If you have a bushfire survival plan, refer to it now and be ready to follow it. If you do not have a bushfire survival plan, or if your plan is to leave, identify where you will go if the situation changes. Close windows and doors to minimise smoke exposure. If you suffer from a respiratory condition, keep your medication close by. Drive with caution in low visibility conditions. Contact your neighbours to see if they need help preparing for the bushfire. Consider finding your essential items (e.g., identification documents, prescription medication, food and water, and protective clothing such as a long-sleeved cotton shirt and trousers, and boots) in case you need to leave. Consider what you will do to protect your pets and livestock. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Advise family and friends of your intended actions if the situation changes. KEEP UP TO DATE BY: Following QFES on Facebook (@QldFireandEmergencyServices) and Twitter (@QldFES) Staying tuned to your local radio station. Find your local ABC radio station at https://radio.abc.net.au/help/offline and your local commercial radio station at http://www.commercialradio.com.au/find-a-station/queensland Visiting the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/map FURTHER INFORMATION: For bushfire preparation tips, visit the RFS website: www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/BushFire_Safety For information about road closures, call 13 19 40 or visit www.qldtraffic.qld.gov.au The next update will be provided when the situation changes.

11.01.2022 RESULTS ARE IN: Almost 600 survey responses will be considered in the creation of a Coastal Futures Adaptation Strategy and action plan. A key response to questions on ways to build community resilience was a call for more information on the management of coastal hazards and foreshore vegetation. Check out the survey results here: https://frasercoast.engagementhub.com.au/coastal-futures-pl... The survey focussed on: Burrum Heads; Toogoom; Dundowran and Craignish; Hervey Bay; Mary River; River Heads and Booral, and; Great Sandy Straight townships. 08.01.2022 The mouth of Tooan Tooan Creek is being opened up to make sure it is ready for the storm season. The sand naturally builds up at the mouth of the creek where it can block the flow of stormwater and tides. To ensure that the creek is ready and will flow during the storm season, Council needs to remove the sand.... The project is due to start today (Monday 23 November) and take up to three days, weather permitting. The sand will be stockpiled on land near the All Abilities Playground for a few days and will then be used at high priority beach nourishment locations or taken to Council’s stockpile area on Booral Road for use at a later date. Beach access walkways beside the creek may be closed while the earthmoving equipment is on the beach. We ask residents to be aware that the equipment is on the beach and that trucks will be moving between the creek mouth and the Seafront Oval extension. We urge residents to avoid the area if they can while the work is underway.

08.01.2022 Getting to the beach or Urangan Harbour will soon be easier for pedestrians using Moolyyir Street! A new 1.3m-wide concrete-footpath is being built on the northern side of Moolyyir Street and a section of the Esplanade to join to the existing Esplanade pathway. The footpath will include a new pedestrian crossing over Moolyyir Creek in Moolyyir Street.... The causeway in Moolyyir Street will be converted from two lanes to one lane so space can be devoted to a pedestrian crossing. Moolyyir Street will be closed from this week with detours and traffic management in place while the works are underway. Work on the project is anticipated to finish in January 2021.

04.01.2022 Hervey Bay resident Alex Gow watched on as his great great nephews helped plant a tree in the Hervey Bay Botanical Gardens to celebrate his 100th birthday. Alex was born in Scotland and worked from the age of six helping the milk man with his horse and cart from 4.30am, he was paid a billy of milk a day. He still attributes the milk for his strong bones. He left Scotland for Australia on his 18th Birthday and spent most of his working life working on cane farms and in saw m...ills. Arriving in Mackay in 1938 he stayed in the area working on a property. He said one crush he cut 425 tonne of cane by himself. "If I had any sense I would have gone to the Darling Downs with the other lads," he said. Shortly after arriving in Australia he served in World War II in New Guinea. He also ran a successful mower, chainsaw and motorbike shop in Toowoomba for some years. Later in life he returned to Scotland, but after discovering he had outlived his "old pals" from school, Alex moved to the Bay about 12 years ago to be close to family. Alex said the secret to a long life is a glass of good whiskey. To this day he drinks one every day. Happy Birthday Alex! See more
