24.01.2022 Meet the Queensland Parks and Wildlife team based in Cairns Everyday they wake up focused on protecting our environment assisting with everything from reef monitoring, visitor management through to fire management. This team manage the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the national parks - an area that extends all the way up to Cape York! ... They are also responsible for 450 Island National Parks across the region. Special shout out to Nicole snd Dave for taking us out on the Marine Parks boat today and for sharing their passion with us at Fitzroy Island.

24.01.2022 Girls to the front I’m proud to be one of 21 Queensland Labor women sworn in today to the Queensland Parliament. In 2018 when I delivered my first speech as Queensland’s youngest woman elected, I acknowledged how lucky I was to live in a state during a time where my presence was welcomed. ... This wasn’t the case for many trailblazers who came before me. We stand on the shoulders of giants who sacrificed so much in the pursuit of gender parity and I certainly don’t take the responsibility to continue that path towards equality lightly. I hope this picture encourages more women to help change the world for the better. Because you can’t be what you can’t see!

23.01.2022 Filming a quick congratulatory message to the students involved in the Wonder of ScienceVirtual State Conference this Friday. Throughout the program students in years three to nine work on a collaborative inquiry project guided by Young Science Ambassadors, who are PhD candidates or early career researchers from leading Queensland universities. A STEM education provides our kids with the ability to participate in the new knowledge-based jobs and industries of the future -... some of which don’t even exist yet! Best of luck to all of the finalists!

20.01.2022 How are you spending your Sunday? I’m enjoying the coffee at Cadence Cafe while getting through some work.

14.01.2022 On this day 46 years ago Gough Whitlam announced the creation of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park saying: We will take this action to protect an irreplaceable part of Australia’s natural heritage. We will preserve it both for its intrinsic value and its importance to the tourism industry in Queensland. The press statement issued on the 25 November 1974 goes on to say:... ‘Mr. Whitlam said there had been little evidence of Mr. Bjelke-Petersen’s willingness to co-operate. Queensland needed a Labor Government to ensure the survival of the Reef.’

13.01.2022 Who’s excited to see their loved ones from Victoria? From elections (pics below), Christmas celebrations through to more difficult times - family is everything and mine have always been there. This year has been hard for a lot of families so I’m very pleased to share the good news! ... Today Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced Queensland will reopen to Victoria from 1am on December 1. Victoria and New South Wales have both reached 28 days of no unlinked community transmission, which means it’s safe to open our borders again. P.S. the awkward photo down the bottom was a re-enactment of a photo from when they were children. As for my eyes being shut in the first photo- all I can say is, it was a long campaign!

10.01.2022 Meet some of Queensland’s Heroes. These Queensland National Parks Rangers are out day and night fighting the fire on World Heritage Listed K’gari (Fraser Island). They’ve been working tirelessly for over a month to contain this fire and ensure that the majority of the island remains open and doesn’t threaten life or property.... The Palaszczuk Government has invested an extra $16 million over four years, plus another $2.6 million each year to improve our capability for bushfire management in Queensland’s parks and forests. Lighting an illegal campfire is dangerous and can have serious consequences. Protecting the environment is everyone’s business. We all have a role to play.

06.01.2022 Custom Design Shopfitting is a Nerang based family owned business who has received one of the Palaszczuk Government’s Small Business grants. They’ve used this funding to upgrade and purchase a joinery software program and key, setting up a new computer as well as paying the factory rent for one month to reduce the financial burden during Covid-19. This funding support has helped this small business keep staff employed and on Thursday I got to check out some of the work they’re doing!

04.01.2022 The future is electric. Transport is one of the largest emitting sectors of greenhouse gas emissions in the state! To help drive down these emissions (pun intended) the Palaszczuk Government is delivering the world’s longest electric super highway’s in a single state.... From Coolangatta to Cairns (where I am today), and from Brisbane to Toowoomba we want Queenslanders and tourists to be able to travel in a low or zero emissions vehicle. 04.01.2022 10 years ago I was celebrating Schoolies. Fast forward a decade and it’s been a rough year for school leavers. While official events were cancelled due to #COVID19 year 12 graduates are still able to celebrate. ... And I think they deserve to have some fun. Finishing Year 12 is an amazing achievement on its own, but they’ve done it with added pressure of a global pandemic with resilience. We don’t want to be the fun police. But we do want to make sure that young people are safe and watching out for their mates. As Minister for Youth Affairs I’ll now be working alongside our Safe School Support team who lead a multi-agency response with the support of community partners and councils to keep our future leaders safe. Late Friday night I got a chance to meet these passionate and hardworking individuals who do a phenomenal job. SchooliesGC

03.01.2022 These legends are helping take care of Shaz the turtle . Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (CTRC) is a voluntary non-profit organisation dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles. The Great Barrier Reef is home to six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles. ... Unfortunately, Shaz was found with orange nylon wrapped around her. It was wrapped around her shell for a long period of time which caused a deformity in her growth. Due to that she suffers from floating syndrome. In an attempt to reduce waste and stop it from ending up in our waterways our Palaszczuk Government has banned single-use light-weight plastic bags and established the highly successful container refund scheme. When we asked Queenslanders whether we should ban plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery and plates, almost 20,000 people responded with 94% supporting the move. The Palaszczuk Government responded by introducing a bill to enable single-use plastic items to be banned, starting with plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery and plates as a first step. Through the consultation, we also heard significant support for banning expanded polystyrene products such as takeaway cups, and containers. As a result of that public feedback we’ve committed to undertaking further consultation to include polystyrene items in the ban. Because turtles like Shaz shouldn’t have to put up with this rubbish!

01.01.2022 BREAKING: Queensland will reopen to Greater Sydney at 1am on December 1, as per our roadmap. It’s been 28 days since New South Wales had an unlinked case. We know how tough this has been on families, it’s wonderful news.... Thanks to everyone's hard work to keep safe, Queensland is good to go #covid19au
