23.01.2022 Now that SKM Recycling has unexpectedly shut its doors (last Thursday), much of the kerbside recycling from 33 Melbourne local councils will likely be sent to landfill instead. Until a solution is reached, there has never been a more important time for us to hold on to our recyclables wherever possible. Flattening cans and boxes before disposing helps too. There is a new proposal in the works to build a $50 million government-owned recycling centre, which would process half the plastics gathered in Victoria. But until then, it’s on US. Any change you make, big or small, is a GOOD THING.

'From the Ground Up' is a story of genuine change and inspiration - tracing the steps of individuals who transformed their practices following the life-changing realisation - that farmers have a unique opportunity to heal the planet. Ticket includes wine by Noisy Ritual, and food from our favourite local cheesemakers and chestnut growers. Click the link in our bio to book your seat.

21.01.2022 What a delicious thought

20.01.2022 Cover-crops like barley, oats and even radishes have long been a part of agriculture, protecting the soil for the eventual planting of a cash-crop. Now they’re being rebranded as regenerative farming, and marketed as a low-tech, effective weapon against climate change. Not only do they reduce soil runoff from heavy rains and flooding, but they retain water during stubborn periods of drought and suck up greenhouse gases. So the next time you tell a disappointed farmstand employee you don’t like radishes, consider what they’ve done for the planet. Yet another matrix moment kindly provided by fellow foodie and Bloomberg Business editor, Josh Petri.

19.01.2022 What an absolute privilege to share the room with so many passionate advocates for rebuilding our food system a few nights ago. On Wednesday we hosted our Winter Warmer, with a screening of ‘From The Ground Up’ - a documentary about regenerative agriculture made by Amy Browne. The screening was followed by an insightful conversation between Amy and our special guest and documentary subject, farmer Charlie Maslin. We are so humbled and inspired by the many people who came and ...engaged in the conversation so openly. A huge thanks to Sam at Savour & Grace who very thoughtfully selected and donated the delicious cheese, Quentin from Q Le BAKER who made the amazing bread, Richard from Mount Zero Olives for sharing his olives and olive oil, and Chris and Josh at CERES Fair Food for kindly tracking down the last remaining persimmons and chestnuts in Melbourne for us! Most of all, thank you to Cam, Alex and the team at Noisy Ritual Urban Winery for hosting us, for supporting us, and being a prime example of how food (or wine!) can be used to create social and environmental change. Thank you SO much to everyone who attended. Can’t wait to do it again! Pictures by our beloved Andrea Andric.

17.01.2022 Something special has arrived on the Great Ocean Road... Located in Freshwater Creek, Common Ground Project is a fit-for-purpose community farm and cafe that invites Victorian chefs to plant, grow and harvest produce for use in their own venues. From this humble but healthy patch of garden, the benefits are wide-reaching. Leveraging the hospitality industry to boost market demand for produce grown using regenerative practices, putting more locally sourced and biodynamic prod...uce on the plates of restaurant customers, and providing a sense of community and wellbeing for chefs, 1 in 4 of whom experience work-related mental health issues. For anyone headed down the Great Ocean Road this weekend, drop by Common Ground Project for a pit stop. Yes the coffee by Square One is top notch, and the ricotta hotcakes are delicious too. But most importantly, what you spend on brunch will go directly towards improving access to homegrown food and mental health support in the hospitality industry. We’re obsessed

13.01.2022 There's a lot to love about an easy roasted vegetable dip. The caramelised flavour of roasted anything, the way you can customise to your heart's content, the opportunity to eat your favourite colours...got leftover roasted vegetables in the fridge? Now's the time to use them up. Or, roast something especially. It's easy and satisfying to stick with a single vegetable, plus a bit of onion, garlic, shallot, or leek roasted alongside for added depth and sweetness. Some grea...t combos right now are beets and garlic, pumpkin and leeks, or cauliflower and onion. But you can also use a blend of different kinds of roasted vegetables - carrots and sweet potatoes are great team players, for example - and they can all be tossed in olive oil and seasoned simply with salt and pepper or any mix of spices and herbs. Roast everything low and slow - an hour at medium heat works beautifully. Once cool-ish, blitz together with a blender or fork, then garnish with fresh parsley and olive oil. You can dip anything you want in thesefrom crunchy romaine leaves to cucumbers to, sure, potato chips...if the occasion calls for it! Photo by @yungbludlau via @healthy_ish See more

07.01.2022 In February this year, we watched our amazing friend Hamed Allahyari walk on stage and pitch an idea to the festival21 audience, inviting everyone to get involved by donating or volunteering. Just 6 months later, Cafe Sunshine & SalamaTea has OPENED! This not-for-profit serves up the most delicious Persian food you’ll ever eat, but that’s not all. It provides employment and community for refugees and people seeking asylum, something that Hamed has been been passionate about s...ince his own experience of looking for work when he first arrived in Australia in 2012. SalamaTea is now open 7 days a week for dinner, and just secured a liquor license...time to celebrate! CONGRATULATIONS Hamed, we are so inspired by you (and can’t wait to try the Shirazi salad!).

03.01.2022 This Friday, festival21 is not business as usual. It’s not business as usual for the world's children to skip school to get adults to pay attention to the climate crisis. It’s not business as usual for those children to have to ask the adults to skip work.... It’s not business as usual for citizens to strike to get governments to make meaningful commitments to climate action. So, at 2pm on Friday 20 September, we’re not doing business as usual. We're putting our foot (and our tools) down and going on strike, 3 days before the UN Climate Action Summit. festival21 will be joining the global climate strike urging world leaders to take serious action against climate change. We’ll be marching at 2pm from Treasury Gardens alongside our fellow climate advocates, responsible businesses and the courageous school kids that are letting leaders know that enough is enough. Over 1500 Australian businesses and organisations have pledged to be part of the This is Not Business as Usual movement and yours can too. Whether it’s closing the doors, having a meeting free day, allowing a long lunch, or sending an email to make it clear that teams will not be penalised for taking a few hours off. While it’s not up to the private sector to lead climate action, we can do our part in this first of a kind moment. See more
