21.01.2022 THE HARBOUR BRIDGE CATS. 1950S/60S In the early 1950s, two white cats named Bridget and Pylon took up residence in the S/East pylon of the Sydney Harbour ...Bridge. They were cared for by Yvonne Rentoul, who ran the Pylon Exhibition and Souvenir shop. The pair spent almost their entire lives on the Pylon, not even leaving during thunderstorms. According to a feature in the Sunday Herald of July 1951... Bridget was once carried down but, raced back up again when released. The 1957 photo below shows a cat apparently named George, on the parapet and in comments below, being patted by a visitor also in 1957. Also below is a short piece of ABC footage from 1969 showing a mother and son visiting the Pylon, featuring two more cats. (Sources: National Geographic/Pylon Lookout/SMH) See more

04.01.2022 This week marks 122 years of the iconic Queen Victoria Building. Built to honour the people of Sydney, the resplendent QVB was declared open by the Lady Mayore...ss of Sydney, Francis Harris in 1889. To commemorate the opening, a grand ball was held for more than a thousand guests. Rumour has it that this was a night of extravagance, dancing and festivity. To celebrate, we invite you to discover never-before-seen images of the QVB courtesy of The State Library of New South Wales. #qvb
