25.01.2022 Napier. Most of the city was destroyed in an earthquake in 1931. The rebuild resulted in a beautiful collection of Art Deco buildings. Their beach hasn’t go a lot going for it though.

23.01.2022 Sculpture, Christchurch Botanic Gardens - or should that be bot Gardens. ???? I didn’t dare taking a pic from the other side.

15.01.2022 Waiheke Island is a 40 minute ferry ride from Auckland CBD. A great place to spend a few hours. I only saw the western end - a few days would have been needed to see much more.

15.01.2022 Christchurch Botanic Gardens and Avon River

10.01.2022 When I was a lad (some years ago), I spent a lot of time at our local jetty. I would go fishing there and in summer would go out to the end of the jetty and jump from the railings into the water - along with hundreds of other kids. I believe that is frowned upon now and each jetty has signs prohibiting such fun. I have seen a few rebels ignore the signs but they do so at their own risk. In New Zealand (where else, given that invented bungy jumping), they encourage jumping fr...om high places into the water. Here in Wellington they have constructed a tower just for the more adventurous youth to jump into the water and entertain those who are not quite so brave. I was a little concerned as there didn’t appear to be much of a margin of error where the landing may have been onto something a little harder than water. I just noticed the advertisement painted on the building to the right. He may need it at some stage, . See more

07.01.2022 Dunedin, South Island. Sadly the Cadbury factory has closed down. The railway station seems to function for tourist trains, but is still a beautiful building.

07.01.2022 Auckland Museum and War Memorial over looking the city.

07.01.2022 I am currently cruising down the east coast of New Zealand. Today’s stop was Tauranga. Beautiful sunny day and a great time to be at the beach but I had work to do. About to head off and deliver a lecture. I’ll finish with questions at the bar. It’s a tough gig.

06.01.2022 Wellington. This place has a lot going for it. Great atmosphere and a cable car that wasn’t working.

06.01.2022 Christchurch. Still a lot of earthquake damage evident. The Cathedral is still a wreck and I don’t think they quite know what they are going to rebuild. The university buildings look to be in pretty good shape though. I think they may have undergone a lot of repair.

05.01.2022 Hobart. A brief stop after a rocky crossing of the Tasman. We were welcomed into Storm Bay by a small pod of short-beaked dolphins - I wasn’t quick enough to get a photo so you will to take my word for how spectacular their antics were as they surfed the bow wave. Beautiful, small dolphin. On the way out of Storm Bay I rescued a small petrel (diving petrel?) who had decided to hitch a ride for a while. Then off to Richmond for a scallop pie (what else in Hobart), a Scottish festival (unplanned with too many bagpipes), Puddle Duck winery for a tasting (bug thumbs up) to finish with a visit to Runnymede House on the outskirts of the city. Runnymede was owned by a whaling family (well, the men did the whaling) and has a great display of whaling memorabilia including scrimshaw. Beautiful house and garden.

05.01.2022 After a relatively rough crossing of the Tasman, we made it to Hobart. I was up early and managed to watch a pod of small dolphins escort the vessel as we entered Storm Bay. Alas, I didn’t managed to get a photo but you can take my word for it, they were beautiful. After negotiating Immigration, I escorted a bus load out to a tasting at Puddle Duck Wines before heading to Richmond where I had a curried scallop pie (what else would you have here in Tassie). I ate my lunch while watching the local Tasmanian Scottish clans trying out their bagpipes, drum majoring skills and highland dancing. We stopped off at Runnymede House and Gardens on the way back. A nice afternoon out. We head for Melbourne tonight. Sea day tomorrow so I’ll be busy lecturing.

03.01.2022 Synchronised ducks. Waiheke Island.
