Weather Situation: Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Canberra, Goulburn, Yass, Wagga Wagga, Griffith and Narrandera. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move your car under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. * Report fallen power lines to Essential Energy (132 080) * Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall. * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. * Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water. * If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue. * Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. * After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides. * Unplug computers and appliances. * Avoid using the phone during the storm. * Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500. The next warning is due to be issued by 1:35 am Monday. 13.01.2022 The latest forecast for the Wagga region, for this coming week.

13.01.2022 The Bureau has confirmed that a La Niña has formed in the tropical Pacific, with climate models suggesting it's likely to remain until at least the end of 2020.... La Niña typically brings: A wetter-than-average spring and summer to northern and eastern Australia; Cooler-than-average days and warmer-than-average nights; Increased tropical cyclone numbers; An earlier start to the monsoon and wet season; Average fire risk; and Less intense but more prolonged heatwaves across southern Australia. But every La Niña event is different. Once La Niña develops it usually finishes the following autumn, but some events have lasted 2 or 3 years. Rainfall can also vary considerably. During the last big event of 2010-2012 rainfall was above average across most of Australia (we saw Category 5 tropical cyclone Yasi devastate far north Queensland communities during this period), whereas rainfall during the La Niña event of 2008-2009 was much more patchy. 01.01.2022 A local group of UNSW medical students are in the middle of organising a charity raffle to help support Riverina Bluebell and emphasise the importance of mental health during this difficult year. The raffle is also helping to promote local Riverina business and generate some publicity for small business owners who may be doing it tough at the moment. These guys and gals haven't even finished their medical training and they're ALREADY looking out for our health. 10/10 from us!
