09.01.2022 Some officials favor Neg. Occ. ECQ extension Some Negros Occidental officials favor the extension of the enhanced community quarantine period, saying that ...re-opening borders by April 14 would be premature. "We need the extension due to the delays in the release of test results. We are not yet in the position to conclude how many are truly affected," Rep. Leo Rafael Cueva (Neg. Occ., 2nd District) said. Cueva said lifting the ECQ prematurely might erase what we had already achieved. The efforts of our frontliners and the government will be in vain," he added. Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia Sunday said no decision has been made yet on whether the ECQ will be extended beyond April 14. In the meantime, we are going to consult health officials, clinical experts and the Inter Agency Task Force on COVID-19, we still have time to decide on that, Leonardia said. Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya shared Cueva's sentiments, but pointed out the need for test results to come out soonest as they will serve as basis of the LGUs and the IATF when they deliberate whether to extend the ECQ period or not. "We need empirical data. We have to decide based on science. That is why the test results should be out ASAP. They are very important as well as the implementation of the planned mass testing," Gasataya said. Mayors Salvador Escalante of Cadiz City, Alfredo Marañon III of Sagay City, and Richard Jaojoco of Toboso also favor the extension of the ECQ imposed by the provincial government from March 30 to April 14. The longer the better," briefly replied Jaojoco via messenger when asked by the Visayan DAILY STAR. Of all LGUs in the province, Jaojoco was the first to declare total lockdown of certain barangays in Toboso, where there were reported PUIs and PUMs until they all tested negative. His move was questioned by some quarters but Lacson upheld the mayor's decision. "I am supporting the extension of the ECQ period provincewide," Marañon said. Escalante, on the other hand, said he poses no objection to an ECQ extension but stressed that the quarantine must be strictly implemented in a bid to sustain the LGU efforts to flatten the curve. We expect that by this weekend, we will have between 50 to 100 PUMs, down from the total of over 2,000 three weeks ago. And by the middle of next week, if we continue to be under ECQ status, we will achieve, with God's Divine intervention, zero PUIs and PUMs, Escalante said. "But if we open up our borders with LGUs that have confirmed positive COVID-19 cases, then we will negate the gains we have achieved so far," he continued. Escalante's more pressing concern, however, should the ECQ be extended is that "another week will deplete the remaining balance of the city's calamity fund" as the LGU has distributed food packs and relief assistance to all their 40,000 households twice already. Sagay City Councilor Arthur Christopher Marañon, meanwhile, said he is for a single 49-day lockdown/ECQ as he called on the Capitol Inter-agency COVID-19 Task Force to study and assess Taiwan's success story as it may be applicable to Negros Occidental. With the provincial government's resources, it can look into the doable practices that resulted in Taiwan's success in its battle against COVID-19 and adopt the same locally, he said. "I am for extension. Based on studies and projections made by experts, another 14 to 21 days would be ideal," Marañon said. What he is worried about, he continued, is the delayed delivery of the promised national government services and financial assistance. As it is now, it is the private sector that continues to carry the weight in helping the poor and in providing needed supplies for the frontliners, Marañon said. "I hope that they will fast track the processing of the cash assistance for the needy," he added.*ETLoretizo
