08.01.2022 One hundred and twenty motion-sensor cameras have been installed across the Ovens Valley to detect and monitor Long-footed Potoroos ability to survive following last summer’s devastating fires. The cameras will be stationed for the next 21 days and use heat-sensing technology that trigger an infra-red ‘flash’ when movement is detected capturing images of the rarely seen species. The data will be used to help us better understand the impacts that widespread fires have on ...the threatened marsupial so we can take important steps to ensure its survival. Long-footed Potoroos are an endangered species and only found in parts of north east Victoria and far east Gippsland. Bushfires, climate change and predation by foxes, wild dogs and feral cats has contributed to the population’s decline. This project is part of the Victorian Government’s Bushfire Biodiversity Response and Recovery program which supports on-ground action to help species impacted by last summer’s bushfires. All activity complied with public health measures, prioritising the safety of the Victorian community, our staff and contractors. 07.01.2022 We have been working with our partner agencies across north east Victoria to control Broom species in bushfire affected areas. While individual Broom plants die during fire, the intense heat stimulates the germination of seeds, with the new plants spreading on mass. Sites with high biodiversity values have been targeted for treatment, including locations in the Buffalo and Buckland Valleys, and the catchment area surrounding Dartmouth Dam.... These works form part of the threat management program under our ‘Bushfire Biodiversity Response and Recovery Program’, which focuses on management of invasive pest plant and animal threats in the aftermath of bushfire.
