22.01.2022 WORLD VISION ON THE GROUND IN WAKE OF ECUADOR QUAKE The latest toll of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Manabi in northwest Ecuador shows the quake has claimed at least 350 lives and left more than 2,000 people injured. There are reports at least 300 buildings have been completely destroyed, while countless more are damaged and unsafe for habitation right now. The Ecuadorian government declared a state of emergency with the provinces of Manabi, Esmeraldas, Los Rios, ...Santa Elena, Guayas and Santo Domingo particularly affected. Ecuadors president says he believes the death toll will rise in the coming days as the extent of the disaster becomes clearer. Hundreds of aftershocks have been recorded since the deadly earthquake first hit. Because of its presence in Ecuador for nearly four decades, the international aid agency World Vision responded immediately to the disaster. Its emergency teams set up two temporary shelters, distributed tents, hygiene products, nappies, food, water, and more. A rapid response team is currently en route to Riobamba (in the province of Chimborazo) to distribute other emergency supplies, including bottled water, toilet paper, noodles, canned tuna, toys and art supplies for young children. This is the worst earthquake to strike Ecuador since 1979. It was a truly terrifying event felt across the country. The people of Ecuador spent a long, sleepless night worried about further shocks, says Jos Luis Ochoa, World Visions National Director in Ecuador. Right now, our primary concern is ensuring the needs of children and their families are met. World Vision is in the process of setting up spaces where children and young people can access psychosocial care and mitigate any emotional distress. Damage to telecommunications and road infrastructure has left some communities cut off from emergency response teams. Seven of World Visions development programmes near the epicentre are reporting no electricity and no running water. Still, the aid agency will be scaling up to reach 10,000 people in the hardest hit areasincluding Manabi, Esmeraldas, and Los Rioswith emergency relief items like mattresses, mosquito nets, hygiene supplies, kitchen kits (pots, pans, plastic cups, plates, utensils, bowls) and water treatment systems.

16.01.2022 IT'S OFFICIAL. SENATE 'TRIGGERS' JULY ELECTIONS Seems Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull built his government’s electoral strategy on contesting a double-dissolution election. A double dissolution is a procedure permitted under the Australian Constitution to resolve deadlocks between the House of Representatives and the Senate. If the conditions (called a trigger) are satisfied, the Government can request the Governor-General to dissolve both houses of Parliament and call a fu...ll election. The Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) reforms, twice rejected by the Senate, "triggered" a double dissolution election. Cross-bench senators Bob Day, Dio Wang, David Leyonhjelm, Zhenya 'Dio' Wang, Nick Xenophon sided with the Government, which was defeated by the Opposition (Australian Labor Party), The Australian Greens, and remaining cross-benchers. The Prime Minister described the reestablishment of the ABCC as a "very important part" of his party's economic plan. "After the budget, I will advise the Governor-General to dissolve both houses of parliament and I will advise him to call an election on the second of July," Turnbull said. But Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said the Prime Minister had it all planned out. "Nine times, including as recently as Sunday, [the Prime Minister] said this election would be on July 2," Shorten said.

15.01.2022 Aussie Non-profit Raises over $100,000 to Aid Asylum Seekers The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is Australias leading asylum seeker assistance organisation, delivering services to over 1,300 asylum seekers through programs such as material aid, health, legal, counseling, casework, and food bank. A new ASRC initiative, the Food Justice Truck, is a social enterprise food truck that will sell food to the public at market prices and subsidise the cost of groceries for refu...gees and asylum seekers. On StartSomeGood.com, the ASRC Food Justice Truck campaign successfully raised $153,412 from 970 backers, making the campaign the LARGEST run by an Australian non-profit on a crowd-funding platform. Funds will go towards to purchase of a truck and employ a full-time staff member, allowing the Justice Truck to reach around 2,000 asylum seekers a month. Our first crowd-funding campaign was quite a ride. A lot of effort went in, a lot of sleep was lost, but achieving our ultimate goal made it all worthwhile, says Patrick Lawrence from ASRC. The ASRCs Food Justice Truck campaign is part of a growing movement of social impact organisations responding to recent funding cuts by turning to crowd-funding. Another crucial factor in the shift towards crowd-funding as an alternative source of funding has been the expanding use of social media. Twitter was very important to the process, but Facebook was crucial, said Lawrence. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of the ASRCs existing support base to the success of the program, for whom I hope this was an exciting and enjoyable process to be part of.

14.01.2022 VICTORIA'S LIQUOR LICENSING LAWS FAIL FAMILIES AT RISK The Australian Drug Foundation is calling for an immediate overhaul of the Victorian Liquor Act after a large Dan Murphy's liquor barn in Melbourne’s south-east was approved in an area already well served by alcohol outlets and known as a "family violence hot spot." Police and local government have to deal with the consequences of heavy drinking; but the interests of the liquor industry gets priority due to the conditions of the Act, said ADF National Policy Manager Geoff Munro. "Councils deserve greater power to determine the number and location of liquor outlets in their area."
