23.01.2022 Some things just go really well together - steak and salad, milk and cookies, music and dance, etc. We believe that there is also a synergistic relationship between Functional Medicine and Positive Psychology as both approaches to wellness focus on more that symptom reduction. Support for the interplay between mind and body is now emerging in the cutting edge field of embodied cognition that may result in a radical shift in the way mental health issues are understood and treated. A basic tenet of embodied cognition is that states of body modify states of mind. http://positivepsychology.com.au//functional-health-and-p/

20.01.2022 A new drug treatment for depression. 'Everything old is new again..'. Ketamine, a drug first developed in 1962, is today being used as fast acting treatment to alleviate depressive symptoms. The drug appears to show good results with patients who have not responded to other antidepressant medication. There is some evidence that repeated ketamine infusions may extend the benefit of treatment for anywhere between a few months months to a year.... Interesting points of note: - Ketamine, was extensively used in Vietnam as an anaesthetic because soldiers were able to administer it to each other when out on the battle field. - Ketamine (or 'Special K) is, to this day, also used as a recreational drug. It can be injected, consumed in drinks, snorted, or added to cigarettes. At high doses, users experience an effect referred to as K-Hole, an out of body or near-death experience. Interestingly, LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) was first the focus of psychiatric research in 1938 and, like Ketamine, later became popular as a party drug. How it works: Most commonly prescribed, antidepressants target the brains serotonin or noradrenaline pathways. Ketamine blocks the signalling molecule NMDA, a component of the glutamate pathway, which is involved in memory and cognition. Before ketamine was studied, it was not known that this pathway was involved in depression. Limitations: While the early indications regarding the benefits of ketamine treatment are positive, the long term effects of this treatment are currently unknown. It is unfortunately a long way past the point at which new drugs (or old drugs used in different ways) are first prescribed that the broader and longer term consequences of their use become clear. A treatment option with nothing but long term benefits: Psychological treatment for depression has a success rate that matches medication but with a lower relapse rate! As the good proverb goes: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.. When it comes to treating depression, it is only psychological treatment that can support an individual to learn: new coping responses, relationship skills, cognitive skills, and problem solving skills.

18.01.2022 Exponential Growth and the formula for enabling it. Bold by Peter Diamandis was released on Kindle a few weeks ago (I have not read a paper book for 2 years). I found this book both enlightening and relevant. If you are curious about how technology is changing the world and the exponential opportunities that it avails than this book will engage you.

14.01.2022 Understanding the dark side of our personality and having strategies to manage these traits is a significant advantage in life. The Hogan Assessment System provides a range of powerful tools for advancing insight and sponsoring positive change. When there is a value add in the use of psychometric assessment in my corporate coaching work (and there often is) I use the Hogan tools because they have been designed specifically for corporate application. Interestingly, many of the personality measures used for recruitment and coaching were not initially designed for this purpose. Check out the new subscales and industry derailers at the following link: http://www.hogandarkside.com/#gotoscales

11.01.2022 Over the last few years, the number of reported incidents of domestic violence in Queensland have been rising. Currently an average of 180 domestic violence incidents are reported in Queensland each day. Last weeks tragedies in which three women and two children were killed in Queensland and NSW were heart breaking examples of this growing problem. The Queensland support service DV Connect has reported a doubling of calls for help since these incidents and it is likely that... these tragedies have been confronting wake up calls for some living in domestic violence situations, and motivated some to seek help. As the Queensland government now reviews legislation around domestic violence and mobilises funds to assist supportive services in this area, everyone within the community has a role to play. Be aware that violence and abuse doesnt just happen in intimate relationships but takes all forms such as elder abuse, child abuse, child to parent abuse etc. The difficulty is that individuals in an abusive situation are often unaware of the risk they are in until the situation escalates and they feel quite trapped. Often, they need a supportive person to step forward and suggest that they seek out psychological or crisis support. 10 Warning signs a person may be in a DV situation - Seems afraid of his/her partner - Social withdrawal - Partner is critical of him/her in public - Forces sexual activity - Partner makes all the decisions - Talks about partners jealousy, possessiveness or bad temper - Has become anxious, depressed, lost confidence - Unexplained physical injuries - Children appear fearful of partner - Reluctance to leave children with partner If all these warning signs apply to you or a loved one, please contact us on 07 3358 4666 to arrange an appointment with one of our psychologists who can help support you in taking the next step. The Queensland domestic violence link (http://qlddomesticviolencelink.org.au) has many more helpful resources and contact numbers.

09.01.2022 This year, World Suicide Prevention Day and R U OK? Day happen to fall on the same date. This draws our attention to the fact that suicide continues to be a significant issue in Australia, 65,000 people attempt suicide each year and men account for 75% of all suicide deaths. At the 4Life Psychology Centre, we love the R U OK? campaign as it encourages all of us to have real conversations with people in our network. Australian Health Minister, the Hon Sussan Ley MP, said that ...meaningful conversations with family and friends arent about solving someones problem; but helping that person feel connected and supported. "Well all grapple with tragedy, loss, and grief through life - and many of us will also live with a mental illness," Minister Ley said. "Regular, meaningful conversations are one way we can all support each other cope with change, adversity and illness. If you ask; listen without judgement; encourage action; and follow up, you can make a positive difference to someones resilience and wellbeing." Take some time to check in with someone today, it could be the most important conversation you have.

08.01.2022 Is YOUR life chafing YOU? What is Frictional Cost? Friction may be defined as resistance to relative motion. In psychological terms friction can be defined as anything in your life that is working against the realisation of what is most important to you. Example of high friction living are provided to us by reality TV shows like Hoarders, The Biggest Loser, and My Dysfunctional Family that engage viewers with provocative and confronting footage of people who have been stuck ...Continue reading

03.01.2022 What you focus on, you amplify It is rare that you see truth plastered on a wall, but this what I saw driving through the Valley the other day. I would love to know the story behind who or how this statement got here. Enabling people to focus on what matters most is the cornerstone of hypnosis. In fact, good hypnosis sessions avoid any negative suggestion like every time you put your hand up to make a comment you will find yourself feeling less anxious. All the mind regi...Continue reading

01.01.2022 Gender difference research in Positive Psycholgy. It seems on the basis of a recent study (Thompson, Peura, & Gayton, 2015) that men and women differ in their level of engagement with, and preference for, certain Positive Psychology interventions (PPIs). The bottom line was that women showed a greater level engagement (or intrinsic motivation) for three PPIs often used to increase well-being. Specifically, women were shown to be more intrinsically motivated to express gratitude, commit acts of kindness, and savor lifes pleasures. This finding is consistent with other research that suggests men are more oriented to extrinsic aspirations like financial success and recognition, whilst women have more intrinsic aspirations like self-acceptance and connecting and bonding with others.
