12.01.2022 C A L F R A I S E S Calf raises are a simple but effective exercise for rehabilitation of many ankle and foot injuries, in particular Achilles Tendinopathy. Here are some simple progressions we commonly use: ... 1Isometric holds: we often start with static holds called isometrics in the early stages of injury when the tendon is most painful. 2 Mid-Full range: doing your calf raises on the step will allow your ankle to move through full range which is important for return of full function. 3 Single leg: performing calf raises on one leg either on the floor or on a step will require more strength and control. 4 External load and plyometrics(not shown): When running the Achilles tendon experiences forces 5-10x your body weight, therefore end stage rehabilitation will always including adding weights and jumping based exercises (plyometrics). Always complete exercises both with straight and bent knee to target all fibres of the Achilles and calf (gastrocnemius and soleus). Always speak to your physiotherapist before commencing any of these exercises for individual advice.
