25.01.2022 As people are out and about more and taking their dogs with them during the last of the Summer months, we've seen an increase in the number of patients we treat for kennel cough. This infection is normally prevented through an annual vaccination, and is not as common as it used to be, but is highly infectious and can be easily spread in areas where dogs congregate. To check if your dog is up to date with their annual vaccinations, please contact the clinic and speak with our friendly staff.

24.01.2022 Understanding you Cats Pain Wouldnt it be great if you could talk to your cat? While it would make your life easier, not to mention your precious feline more comfortable. Pain is not a secret you want your cat to keep, and monitoring signs both large and small is key to deciphering your feline companion. While we may not be able to communicate with our feline companions as easily as with each other, we still have the ability to observe our cats behaviour and routine, and e...ven notice subtle facial and physical features. Cats are masters when it comes to hiding signs of pain or illness, and it is important to pay attention to subtle changes that may indicate an issue before it becomes serious. If you are concerned about your cat, please contact your veterinarian to discuss these concerns.

22.01.2022 3 Steps to a stress-less bath! Some dogs love the water whereas with others...well water is not their best friend! The 3 steps below will help to make bath time relaxing for everyone. 1) Tire them out - take your dog for a walk or a play in the park and burn some energy. They will be more relaxed when its tub time.... 2) Praise and encourage good behaviour - the LickiMat Splash is perfect for this as you can put something tasty, like peanut butter, in it for focusing their attention elsewhere. Dont forget to praise them as well - you want them to know how well they are doing! 3) Brush before, during and after a bath - this helps to loosen fur and dirt. Many dogs love this bonding experience as well how relaxed it makes them feel. The Kong ZoomGroom is perfect for this as it can be used both as a dry and wet brush and its lovely rubber grips feel like a massage for your pet. We carry both products here at 4 Paws so if you would like more info, please give us a ring!

22.01.2022 Some interesting cat facts for you this feline friday!

22.01.2022 Thank you for your continued support in 2020 thus far. We re-opened our clinic doors on Wednesday 24th June. What measures are we taking? 1. Limiting the number of clients in the clinic including *one* client per pet 2. Increased cleaning of high touch surfaces... 3. Making hand sanitiser available at reception and in all consult rooms 4. Social distancing of 1.5 metres at all times You may also wish to wear your own mask if it makes you more comfortable; likewise we have them for your use and our staff may choose to wear one as well. We kindly ask that, where possible, you stick to your appointment time as closely as you can to limit the number of clients waiting in the reception area. If you are unwell or have been in contact with someone suspected of having COVID-19, we kindly ask that you do not visit the clinic. Our team are here to help you and your pets. Please be patient and kind as we all work hard to keep each other safe. Thank you again for your understanding, patience and ongoing support. If you have any questions, please call us on (02) 9953 1264.

22.01.2022 During the warmer months, it's important to remember that providing adequate access to water is a vital necessity when caring for our pets. It can be tricky to keep an eye on our cats' water consumption, and there are a few things that can be done to encourage them to drink, especially during the summer season.

21.01.2022 VOLUNTARY PRODUCT RECALL: Veganpet Dry Dog Food PetFAST, a joint initiative of the AVA and PFIAA, have advised that a number of megaoesphagus cases in dogs are being investigated for a possible link to pet food. 21.01.2022 UPDATE - Seniors' Health Month Photo Call We are thrilled with all the submissions we've had so far for our Senior Pet window display! It has certainly brightened up our front window to have so many lovely faces greeting those who pass by us on Military Road, and we are still adding more faces to our display each day. We love being able to celebrate our golden oldies here at 4 Paws, and seeing the many different kinds of photographs people have sent us has been a great experi...ence for all involved. From dogs and cats all the way to the odd guinea pig or avian friend, we have had such a variety of submissions this year! If you have a photo of your senior pet (age 7+), please send us their best glamour shots to [email protected] or post them in the comment section below!

21.01.2022 With the weather cooling down and the days growing shorter, its important to consider the effects the cooler days may have on our canine companions. Walks are an important part of a dogs daily routine, and increasingly so for their owners during times where we find ourselves limited in recreation activities. While the effects of heat on our pets are perhaps more commonly understood, colder temperatures can also be a potential risk. This is especially something to keep an eye on if you are walking outside of the shorter daylight hours, or travelling to cooler parts of the country as local travel restrictions are eased ahead of long weekends and school holidays, and as we head towards the middle of winter.

20.01.2022 If you have a little creature like Paddy who seems to enjoy the life of a lounging lizard more than other, more sun-conscious souls, then it may be a good idea to invest in a good sunscreen. Sometimes even our best efforts to provide ample shade and shelter are ignored by our most stubborn of companions! Yes - even our pets can experience the benefits of good spf coverage! This is especially important if - like Paddy, your pet has areas that are especially susceptible to sun ...damage (those with white/lighter fur or areas of pink skin exposed). Filta-bac is an antibacterial sunscreen that can be used for dogs, cats, horses, and some livestock species, and is available for purchase in our Pets in the City Wellness Boutique. So if you find yourself worrying after your own lounge lizard, come in and see our friendly staff for more information!

19.01.2022 UPDATE - Seniors Health Month Photo Call We are thrilled with all the submissions weve had so far for our Senior Pet window display! 17.01.2022 Remember, as fun as road trips can be, it's important to make sure your pets are properly secured when heading out in the car. For dogs, this means either a seatbelt attachment for their harness, a booster seat, or a pet carrier, and for cats it means they should be secured in a pet carrier. This is both a legal requirement in Australia, and important for ensuring everyone's safety both inside and outside of the vehicle.

16.01.2022 SENIOR HEALTH MONTH - Behavioural Changes in Older Dogs Restlessness Similarly to those energy-consuming puppy years, youll start to notice your dogs inability to sleep normally throughout the night. When ageing occurs, a dog might have trouble falling asleep at night or staying awake during the day. When a dog gets older, it is quite common for their sleep cycle to be reversed.... As dogs age, they also become increasingly dependent on their owners.. A dog might require more attention and care than it did in the past. This characteristic can lead to restlessness or even anxiety if it is not addressed.

16.01.2022 NEXGARD SPECTRA SPECIAL For the month of September, when you buy a Nexgard Spectra 3 pack, receive a single pack FREE. When you buy a Nexgard Spectra 6 pack, receive 2 single packs FREE. 15.01.2022 The importance of nutrition The food your pet eats plays an important role in his or her overall health and well-being. Balanced nutrition is an essential part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If your pet is overweight, your veterinarian may recommend a Hill’s food specifically formulated for weight loss. These foods provide complete and balanced nutrition to keep your pet satisfied whilst they lose weight. Hill’s weight management foods are available in wet and dry forms... to meet your pet’s needs and preferences. Hill’s also has specific weight loss treats available for dogs. Changing from an existing food to Hill’s is easy because pets love the taste of the food. However, we often advise gradually transitioning between two diets over a week or so to ease the change. Tips for staying on track Work with your veterinary healthcare team to establish your pet’s target weight and set goals Feed only at designated feeding times throughout the day Stick to the recommended feeding amount for your pets ideal weight Schedule frequent veterinary visits for weigh-ins to monitor your pet’s progress Say no to unhealthy snacks

15.01.2022 Dear Clients, Per NSW Health advice on masks, we are strongly encouraging you to wear a mask when you attend the clinic due the close proximity you are in with our team, particularly in reception and consult rooms. We have disposable masks at reception should you need one.... https://www.nsw.gov.au/media-/health-advice-update-on-masks We also appreciate your cooperation in keeping to our recommendation of only 1 adult attending the clinic per pet and keeping as closely to your appointment time as possible. Thank you for helping to keep us, as well as yourselves, safe during this time.

15.01.2022 Gorgeous Peaches came for her first visit with us yesterday and it's safe to say our nurse Louise is quite smitten!

15.01.2022 NATIONAL THREATENED SPECIES DAY Today marks national threatened species day here in Australia. Named to commemorate the passing of the last Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) in 1936, it is a day we can reflect on what has happened in the past, and look at what we can all do to help protect our native animals and plants. We are lucky enough to share our space with some amazing native flora and fauna here in Sydney, and many of us enjoy wonderful resources like national parks regular...ly. Its important for pet owners to be aware of what other animals may be sharing the same space as our beloved furry family members, and work together to make sure that we can all share the space safely and responsibly. For more information on managing domestic pets and native wildlife, please see the following sources: Australian Government: https://www.environment.gov.au//protecting-our-wildlife-re WIRES: https://www.wires.org.au//wildl/domestic-pets-and-wildlife

15.01.2022 While we do see our fair share of dogs and cats, we also have the pleasure of treating a few special little creatures such as Hazelnut the guinea pig. Hazelnut came in with her friends Snowflake and Coco to see our nurses for their regular nail trim - but we soon noticed she was suffering from a nasty case of bumblefoot! This infection was causing the pads of her feet to swell up and become sore - luckily our vets have been able to treat it and Hazelnut has been on the mend (and sporting some very fetching fluro orange feet bandages while she's at it!)

14.01.2022 BRADFIELD BARK 2020 While it may have looked a bit different this year, our team was still thrilled to take part in Bradfield Bark 2020! Styled this year as a live streamed event, participants were treated to a variety of online masterclasses, demonstrations, Q&A panels and even a trivia competition hosted by a number of industry specialists. For those who missed out on the live event, the online activities were recorded and are available to view on the event website. Be sure... to tune in just after 8 minutes to catch our lovely nurses Liv and Amanda in a segment about puppy handling and nail clipping, starring one of our lovely patients, Solar! Event recording can be found here: https://bradfieldbark.com/

12.01.2022 Thank you to all of our loyal (and new!) clients who have continued to support us during COVID-19. It has brought us great joy to be able to continue to service you and your pets. We have loved meeting (and cuddling!) lots of puppies and kittens that have been added to your families as well. We also appreciate your patience as weve done things differently over the last few months. We know that life has been challenging for a lot of people on many levels. We wanted to let y...ou know that we are moving towards a new normal as of the 1st June. We will continue our existing services but also reintroduce services that we had deferred such as vaccinations, desexing and cat boarding, amongst others. We will be re-introducing grooming but unfortunately have limited availability at this time and are working to try and offer more spots. We appreciate your understanding and respectfully request that you treat the team with kindness if you are unable to secure a booking that suits. We will continue to remain contactless for a little while to ensure that our team remain healthy as restrictions ease and there is more movement in the community. We will, of course, keep you up to date when that changes. What does that mean? A) We are open our normal hours but our doors remain locked. Please respect appropriate social distances. B) As per guidelines, if you are meant to be self-isolating or are unwell please do not visit the clinic. C) We are admitting and discharging veterinary AND grooming patients via the MIDDLE clinic door (common hallway, entrance via the car park or via the glass doors between 4 Paws and Chemist Warehouse). Please kindly ring us on arrival (9953 1264) and a member of the team will meet you. If you wish to remain in the common area during the appointment, please observe social distances so that our team are not presented with a number of people in very close proximity when they are attending to you and your pet. When your little one is ready to go home we will call you and take payment over the phone. D) We will continue to process food, medication and other purchases over the phone. Where possible, please phone ahead so that we can organise this for you. We kindly ask that you remain outside when you arrive to collect it. Please note that repeat medications may take up to 48 hours to process. If you require a compounded medication we would appreciate at least 7 days notice. E) Regrettably, at this time, we are still unable to perform house visits. Thank you for your understanding, patience and ongoing support. We hope that you continue to remain safe and well and we hope to be able to welcome you back into the clinic soon!

12.01.2022 SENIOR PET HEALTH MONTH 2020 As we move into the second half of the year, we are welcoming back one of our most popular initiatives: Senior Health Month! During the month of July, in addition to our regular clinic activities, we will have a special focus on the health of our senior patients. We will be offering a special kind of appointment, a Senior Health Check, available for dogs and cats over the age of 7. This appointment involves a comprehensive blood and urine screenin...g, as well as a veterinary consultation focusing on any age-related issues that may be concerning owners. For further information, including pricing, or to discuss any concerns you may have about your own animal companions as they age, please contact the clinic on 9953 1264. And a reminder: if you would like your senior pet to feature in our clinic display, please send in their photos to [email protected] or comment them below! We look forward to seeing you all soon!

12.01.2022 Little Pablo was spoilt for choice when it came time for his big visit at 6 months old! With the recent influx of new furry family members at the clinic, we often see questions arise concerning the kind of post-op care required after procedures such as desexing. There are a range of options available to help manage post-op care, and take some of the stress away from you during what can be an anxious time for new pet owners. Options including soft or hard collars or body suits... are available in the clinic, and are sized to ensure the correct fit and function for your pet. If you are interested in one of these options, please speak to our friendly staff when booking your procedure to make sure we have the size and option to best suit your pet in stock on the day they need it.

12.01.2022 Separation anxiety can be the source of significant stress in the household - for both human and animal family members. There are a number of strategies we can use to treat this behaviour, and if you are concerned, speaking with your vet can be the best place to start.

12.01.2022 Looking to treat your feline family member but not sure what to give them? Feline greenies are a treat specially targeted to cats and designed to assist in the prevention of tartar buildup. They are available now in our Pets in the City Wellness Boutique and come in a variety of flavours to suit our fussier feline friends!

11.01.2022 Dont cough in public or you might get this look!

11.01.2022 CATS, CARS, AND COLD Most people have heard of rodents getting caught in car engines, but did you know that cats occasionally get stuck under hoods too? This happens because cats will often hide under cars in order to stay warm on cold nights. Sometimes cats will climb inside the engine to seek shelter. Unfortunately, this is not a safe place for cats. When unsuspecting car owners turn on their ignition, the moving belts can cause serious injuries and pose a very real threat ...to an animal. Further information on this topic can be found here: http://www.pethealthnetwork.com//cats-cars-and-cold-fanny- And remember - while you may never know where a stray or lost cat may be hiding, you can always ensure your own cats safety by keeping them indoors.

11.01.2022 We will be closing for an hour today to discuss the important mental health initiative of R U Ok? Day, something that is close to our hearts in the Veterinary Industry. But there's no reason they have to miss out on all the fun! Here are some tips for creating a dog-friendly feast to share the party with your canine companions during the festive season.

Or maybe you've got plenty, but you'd like something a little brighter or more cheerful on the days you need a bit of extra colour in the wardrobe. Our fantastic groomer has been crafting a wonderful selection of masks in a variety of patterns, featuring both native and exotic flora and fauna. 09.01.2022 SENIOR HEALTH MONTH - Behavioural Change in Older Dogs Separation Anxiety Separation anxiety is one of the most common characteristics in older dogs. A dog can become sensitive or irritable toward new people or other dogs, especially if their owner is not around. Any loud noises can also bring on anxiety in an older pet. Oftentimes, this stress occurs after the owner has left or is out of sight. Possible consequences that may arise as a result of separation anxiety are:... - House soiling while the owner is gone - Destructiveness - Refusing to eat when the owner is away - Anxiety before the owner leaves (i.e. pacing, panting, etc.) When trying to diagnose these issues, it is important to rule out any other possible medical conditions. For example, if the dog is soiling the house frequently, consult with your veterinarian to verify that it is not a more serious issue. Once you and your veterinarian have come up with a valid prognosis, you can take proactive steps to help your dog age gracefully.

09.01.2022 SENIOR HEALTH MONTH - Senior Dogs and Behaviour As our Senior Pet Health Month gets in to full swing, it is important to talk about the behavioural changes an older dog may go through as they age. Over the next few weeks, we will share some of the common behavioural concerns relating to older dogs. Just like with humans, the older a dog gets, the more their overall health starts to deteriorate. While age comes with less energy and shakier joints, it also comes with deteriorat...ing sensory and cognitive functioning. Sometimes this decline in mental and physical capabilities can cause older dogs to act out or misbehave. However, being aware of these physical and behavioural issues can help you tend to your dog responsively. Consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns regarding your pets behaviour. Your veterinarian is there to help you navigate through your pets process in ageing, and our team are always happy to assist you with any concerns you may have. You may also like to consider contacting a certified and reputable training service such as Lets Go Fido (www.letsgofido.com.au)

09.01.2022 With restrictions now eased for travel within NSW it's the perfect time for you to take a holiday and plan one for your moggy too! We are taking bookings again for cat boarding and have plenty of space available for this coming long weekend as well as the July school holidays.

08.01.2022 LEPTOSPIROSIS Following the recent Leptospirosis cases in the North Shore and Inner West areas of Sydney, we have continued to see a number of calls and bookings in our clinic regarding the Leptospirosis vaccine. Our current recommendation is that if clients live within a 5km radius of the Artarmon/Crows Nest area, or frequent those areas, they should vaccinate their dog(s) against Leptospirosis.... Please contact our friendly team on 9953 1264 if you have any questions, and to book an appointment for your dog's vaccinations. Leptospirosis, in dogs, initially causes very non-specific signs such as lethargy, elevated body temperature, vomiting, and diarrhea. It often progresses to symptoms consistent with liver and kidney failure. Dogs become infected by being in contact with urine from rats or indirectly via contaminated water or soil. They can also become infected by hunting and eating rats.

08.01.2022 WINTER PET CARE: Looking after your arthritic feline Does your cat have arthritis? Arthritic and elderly cats can suffer in cold weather as it severely affects their joints. Offer plenty of warm places for your cat to sleep in, as well as making sure they are easily accessible. If you are concerned about your cats health, or there are any changes then seek veterinary advice. Not sure what arthritis might look like in your feline friend? Take a look at the infographic below for some tips on recognising the signs of arthritis in cats.

05.01.2022 In the last few weeks, The University of Sydney has identified two cases of Leptospirosis through its hospital. Last year there were eight identified cases of Leptospirosis in a similar geographic location of Sydney, the Inner West. This week North Shore Veterinary Specialist Centre also has identified a case of Leptospirosis in our local area of the Lower North Shore. This is the first case we have detected from our surrounding communities. Leptospirosis, in dogs, initia...lly causes very non-specific signs such as lethargy, elevated body temperature, vomiting, and diarrhea. It often progresses to symptoms consistent with liver and kidney failure. Dogs become infected by being in contact with urine from rats or indirectly via contaminated water or soil. They can also become infected by hunting and eating rats. Our current recommendation is that if clients live within a 5km radius of the Artarmon/Crows Nest area, or frequent those areas, they should vaccinate their dog(s) against Leptospirosis. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine available for cats. We advise that cat owners within the affected areas keep their cats contained indoors to protect their pets. Please also ensure that access to rats and stagnant water is limited. If you have any questions, please call us on 9953 1264.

03.01.2022 It's important to keep an eye on your pets during the summer months. Being aware of the possible signs of heat stroke can help you know when to take them to the vet.

03.01.2022 Summer in Sydney brings about the much-awaited beach weather, and it's always fun to include our canine companions on a beach trip! There are a few simple ways you can ensure everyone has a great time on a day out at the beach, including: 1. Making sure to find a dog-friendly beach (and understanding the rules regarding on- and off-leash zones) 2. Having essential equipment packed and accessible (such as water bottles and a bowl, poo bags, a first aid kit, and a sun shelter)... 3. Being aware of your dog - supervising them around water and any debris, and around other beachgoers and their animals If it's your dog's first time around water, it's a good idea to test it with them until you have an idea of their swimming ability (no two dogs are the same!). Remember - salt water ingestion can be dangerous, and it's important to prevent your dog from drinking seawater.

03.01.2022 THE HUGOS Every now and then we see a certain name or names becoming more popular among our clients here at 4 Paws. It's rare, however, to see this same pattern among the pets of our clinic staff. There is currently a trio of handsome Hugos among our 4 Paws family. Some may recognise them from earlier posts, as they definitely know how to work a camera!... If you also have a lovely Hugo in your family, please share a photo in the comments below - we always love to see happy pets and their families!

02.01.2022 This time of year always introduces a range of new things into our pet's environment. Certain kinds of decorations, food, and plants can all present risks to our pets, and it's important to be aware of these dangers so that everyone in the family can enjoy the season.

02.01.2022 This weekend may look a bit different for some of us than it has in past years, but it still gives us time to take a moment with the people closest to us. 4 Paws would like to extend our best wishes to all the mothers in our lives, and in our community this Sunday. Flowers are an excellent way to send our mothers gifts and well-wishes at times we cant be with them (and even when we can). There are many different and beautiful arrangements available, all with different meani...ngs which can be personalised and can make a fun project for the family to work on. It is also an opportunity for us to support a local business during difficult times. While a beautiful bouquet can make the perfect present on this special day, it is important to be aware of certain blooms that may cause harm to our pets. Lilies in particular are very dangerous and should be avoided in households with pets.
