25.01.2022 YOGA 6AM IS WHERE ITS AT!!! @yoga8melbourne @nimbleactivewear @kbhealthandbeauty There is something about 6AM energy. The slate is clean. People are still on that journey back into their heads so they are still available to feel the experience, rather than think it. What an OM-mazing way to bring conscious awareness to the story that unfolds when breath and body speak intimately. The 6AM yogi is the BEST narrator of this seductive and simple story; a story that is written in the body to guide you into presence and into the warm respite of LESS. #bodystory #breathbody #bodymindbreath #6amyoga #6amyogaclub #less #nimbleactivewear #yoga8 #yogateacher #yogaeverydamnday

23.01.2022 Samskara (sam: complete/joined together kara: action/cause/doing). To me, expanses of water truly represent the LIMINAL SPACE where samskaric repatterning can manifest. Here I feel that sacred space between an exhalation and the next - new - inhalation; ripe with opportunities and unlimited possibility for transformation. We are all in the essence of consciousness in our physical form and transforming negative samskara to positive samskara illuminates the purity of the soul.... We are the alchemists of our transformation. This magic becomes an instrument for rebirth into a more authentic, evolved version of the Self. Samskaras really do summarise the over-arching human condition; its our tendency to gravitate towards the negative (note the oceanic darkness that covered the life force of creation spoken about in the oldest text of Hinduism, the Rig Veda. In the Nasadiya - the Creation Hymn, its intimated that it is our job to shine light on this dark ocean by replacing negative samskara with positive. And Yoga Sutra 11.16 states Heyam duhkham amagatam: Future suffering is to be avoided.). My upcoming classes focus - very practically and systematically - on using yogasana to battle negative samskara through INTENTION (sankalpa), INTENSITY (tapas), SLOWING (shani), AWARENESS (vidya), FEARLESSNESS (abhaya), VISION (darshana) and PRACTICE (abhyasa). Freedom lies in the heart of the expansive vision of a transforming samskara @andybbear See more
22.01.2022 The Halloween tradition continues, despite the numbers dropping! Vampire Queen and Vampire Princess ready to paint the town red! Its amazing how five minutes of effort can mean the world to a kid... and goes a lot further than a fancy toy. Even my two kids who are too cool to partake this year, still appreciate my effort for the sake of the younger two. It hasnt been said but kids cant hide the appreciation in their eyes - even when they are too evolved to actually participate #vampire #halloweencostume #halloween #halloweenyoga #motheroftheyear
22.01.2022 #happynewyear 2018 - wow! What an epic year! I feel like I have seen an entire landscape of human traits this past year that has made me learn my most important lesson for the year - that no matter how much work you do; no matter how much yoga you do (in all its manifestations); no matter how much you profess to be in service of others, if you are a naturally born arsehole (or have an intrinsic personality disorder), nuttin you do is going to change it. ...BUT, what a dedicated yoga practice DOES do for the crazies out there (often including myself), is keep them relatively safe within the confines of Yoga Mat Island for at least an hour per day so that others are protected and so that their toxicity doesnt spread in epidemic proportions. In other words, if youre an absolute jerk, you aint gonna be able to do enough yoga in this lifetime to cure yourself from the inside out, but you can at least keep yourself (and others...) safe and distracted by trying. Every. Damn. Day. HAPPY NEW YEAR PEEPS Reverse Warrior (Viparita Virabhadrasana) represents the play-off betweeen ones atman (highest self) and ones ego. The fierce warrior, Virabhadra, grew out of a lock of the enraged Lord Shivas hair and conquered his enemies and in so doing, slays the human ego. Reverse warrior reminds us to stand strong in our Truth. To gaze upward, towards our potential, but to also reach back to pay homage to our ownership of the truth as it is in the present moment - that is, whilst our quest for goodness is real, so is the unrelenting existence of our often-grimy humaneness. disclaimer: I dont dislike arseholes - theyre just more human than most. #2019 #HNY #arsehole #asshole #yogaeverydamnday #yogateacher #melbourneyoga #viparitavirabhadrasana #reversewarrior #alwaysastudent #4kids #moniquerobinyoga #moniquerobin #4pyoga #yogamelbourne
21.01.2022 I absolutely love this. My late grandmother used to talk to her plants with loving kindness. And even as a young kid I could see that was a big part of the reason why they flourished so beautifully. Its so easy to choose kindness - even as a self-serving phenomenon, why would we choose to have plants, people, animals... wilt around us when we have the power (just with the careful use of our words) to make them shine and prosper? I guess for me, my ability to choose lov...ing kindness (which you would think would be such an easy and natural choice - but sadly is not) was developed (and still is developing) over time through my consistent absorption of the teachings I have discovered on my yoga journey. One in which I am still very much exploring and refining. #alwaysastudent #lovingkindness #yogajourney

20.01.2022 Dhanya Vad: I feel gratitude. My daughter, Charli, always lays one on my lips and in so doing thrusts the blessings of my life right in my face. I come forward to push her on the swing and as I swing her up high she leans out of the swing to land her lips on mine, trusting that the meeting forces of our kiss will stop her from hurtling out of the swing. At what age does a kiss stop being the solution? When do we stop showing love because we are scared we might fall? Why ...cant the feeling of your lips meeting with anothers be enough reason to plunge forward and take the risk? Samprati Hum: The present moment is my true self. Kids intuitively understand that by being here, and being grateful now, that the present moment is worthy of that plunge forward - simply for the hope of a kiss; the trust in love. I can appreciate the joy of simply being here. Now is the time to love and to allow love. #kiss #gratitude #motherdaughter #love #yoga See more
19.01.2022 Reframing Definitions of Loyalty and Family with the Yogic Teachings I follow @the.holistic.psychologist who just wrote and posted this on her feed. Following her has been a game changer for me. The word family separate to the story we attach to it as individuals is synonymous with tradition and loyalty. As a person who is very close to my (imperfect) family, I have ALWAYS said family first. But its important to remember that our family story should be narrated ...from a place that is unique to us as individual and unique humans. Just because I receive advice from someone I know and love, it does not mean that I need to be loyal and act on it in an unbridled way. That advice-giver comes from a place of authentic and raw love but they are also human and beautifully flawed with information and insight they can only draw from their own small and unique human experience. Similarly, the choices I make for my kids need to be from a place of pure love but they need to have to opportunity to explore knowledge and experience that differs from my own. I cant guide them towards a single truth. I must let go of my fear that they will make a bad choice. Maybe, just maybe they find an answer that works better than the path I could force them on. Conversely, when I need to be strong for the sake of my family, I can forgive myself for letting my fragility be revealed as I overwhelmingly pursue this obligation. Practicing self-love can be in the form of trusting that my family (and friends) may still be okay - or even be MORE than okay - if it at times they dont put me first or I dont put them first. The family is everything story plays out best when we give one another reciprocal rights to trust that family is bound together by loving someone enough to allow them to find another way if thats what is needed. Family is not just a safety rope that gives no opportunity to fall... it is also a safety net that catches someone after they feel the liberation of free-falling. Yoga asana offers space in-between to feel the liberation and freedom of that free-fall; of that liberating definition of family is everything See more

17.01.2022 BRAVING THE JOURNEY FROM THOUGHT TO FELT. Oasis For me, this place is an opportunity to feel an everyday experience (shopping for basics) as though its the first time. That feeling takes you away from familiaritys power to seduce your mind into a thought realm where you find yourself journeying into inner conversations that arent your truth in the here and now - they are just stories we tell ourselves. The only truth exists in the felt experience available where you are,... bodily and sensately, here and now. We are all divine souls who have been given this gift of a human experience - the most beautiful and liberating aspect of this gift is its smallness and the tangible, physical nature of it. Dont underestimate the power of feeling and breathing into your body as a way of transitioning away from the complexities of a life in the thought realm. This can be applied to the pursuit of successfully long term, intimate relationships. Could it be that sexual attraction (the most straight-forward pathway to a felt experience) is more important than ANY other attribute that a partnership could have... that alchemy makes you more forgiving and less stuck in the complexities of a union dominated by the shackles of having to share complex ideologies, values and belief systems. The older I get the more I yearn for connection based on less rather than more. #alchemy #feltexperience #sexualattraction #yogaeveryday #connection #less #union #yoking See more

15.01.2022 I am often asked how I can get kids to actively participate in a yoga class when they find it so hard to sit still and focus at the best of times. So, lets honestly discuss how kids really can connect to a yoga practice. Check out my latest article which explains why yoga and children really are a great combination. ... 15.01.2022 Ask yourself - "what is my true source of wisdom?" In the beginning it felt particularly "yogic" to relay the wisdom of the great sage, Srila Vyasadeva. Somehow, the Bhagavad Gita and other texts that depict 5000 years more wisdom than my own, seemed like infallible concepts to espouse to my students. But you know what, the truth is I spend way too much time overlooking the gifts right in front of my face in order to get my hands on those lofty gifts at a much higher reach.... But lets be real for a moment; these four kids of mine - that do not share much more than 30 years between them - are my true source of wisdom. The challenges I face rising up to my responsibilities as a mother and their unfaltering ability to meet me where I am at, is what truly allows the yoga in my life to manifest in its rawest form. Their ability to forgive and start over; their ability to move on; their ability to connect with any form of mirth that a moment can offer; their ability to be happy as easily as they can be angry; their ability to get back up; and their ability to take what they need and let go of the rest... is truly the source from which my most profound teachings rise. ...So then, I must ask myself: why does this precious gift so often hide from me in plain sight? 15.01.2022 At the moment Im revisiting that realisation that our thoughts can be coloured and complicated, or they can be classified in simple black and white truths. I invite you to join me in considering the idea that we have the power to either choose to honour the simplicity of black and white, or to get drawn into the kaleidoscope of more colourful thoughts. Whilst kaleidoscopes are beautiful and bright, they sometimes make you squint when you have to look at them for too long.... There is something uncomplicated about simple black and white. Patanjalis Yoga Sutras 1.5 -1.11 refers to 5 thoughts of the mind and they are either coloured klishta or un-coloured aklishta. Patanjali strongly believed that enlightenment was achieved through ones steadfast dedication to "uncolouring" the thoughts of the mind. In order to overcome the fluctuations (or the bright colours) of the mind, we must be an observer of our thoughts and begin to see them like the moon would see the world; simply monochromatic silhouettes of the night - without distinct shape, and without texture. Daylight provides colour and form to everything we see and rather than this being a source of clarity and beauty, it can often fill our minds with chaos and despair in our modern world. Our "monkey mind" can often dominate our "higher mind" and we find ourselves on a downward spiral that can lead to that feeling of being overwhelmed and... breathless. There is something beautiful in the simplicity of the moon, for the moon simply sees the world as a soft silhouette. And so, when the full moon shines, it does so boldly and in its simplicity, it is able to present fully and completely. As the moon is an ethereal observer of the night, and it simply casts but one silver light on all that it sees, we allow our mind to soften its glow similarly, so that our thoughts become nothing more than mere shadows cast from the very real presence that we manifest on the mat. This poem cultivates this idea for me perfectly. Its a very beautiful poem written by Walter de la Mare and it drives me to look at my life as a graceful monochromatic silhouette (less is more, right?): Silver Slowly, silently, now the moon Walks the night in her silver shoon; This way, and that, she peers, and sees Silver fruit upon silver trees; One by one the casements catch Her beams beneath the silvery thatch; Couched in his kennel, like a log, With paws of silver sleeps the dog; From their shadowy cote the white breasts peep Of doves in a silver-feathered sleep; A harvest mouse goes scampering by, With silver claws and a silver eye; And moveless fish in the water gleam, By silver reeds in a silver stream.
14.01.2022 NOTHING LIKE A SLEEPING ADULT My daughter, Sascha, loves to take photos. She will grab my phone and take photos any opportunity she can get. It actually does my head in - probably because of the unhealthy attachment I have to my phone. She often takes pictures of me when Im asleep because she wakes up before me and rushes to my phone to take the snap before I stir. I find it annoying. Today I asked her why she likes taking photos of me when Im asleep (a question probab...ly borne from irritation). Immediately she responded, I like to create memories of you when you dont have your angry face. Wow, it floored me. A million things went through my mind - (more)anger, panic, guilt, despair... and then I smiled, recalling the countless times I would go into my kids rooms after a day of ripping my hair out just to catch an image in my head of their peaceful, sleeping faces... this ritual somehow filled me with enough love to enable me to go to bed, get up, and do it all over again. Could it be that Sascha also needs to recharge her love for me with the power of my peaceful, sleeping face!? Does she go to bed saying to herself, I didnt sign up to be this angry womans daughter, or how can I love a face that speaks a story of anger, frustration and exhaustion? Ive always said that the asana practice is yoga tells the most accurate story of Self because it is the one narrated from the truth of our bodies and the felt experience that our body communicates. So todays step towards self-improvement is a commitment to work on my face asana in order to strengthen the story I write for those whom share this small and precious human experience with me. #asana #asanapractice #faceasana #story #love #gratitude #yogapractice #yogasana #yogateacher #sleep #peaceful #yogastory #4pyoga #motheroffour #fourchildren #alwaysastudent #yogastudent

11.01.2022 OMG!! The Pups are soooooooo damn CUTE!!!! Yesterday I had the pleasure (and the challenge, lets be honest..) of guiding my first session of UpPup at UpDogYoga for term 3. I am not going to lie - teaching 5-y-olds and 6-y-olds the art of mind-body-soul integration is intense. Absolutely no doubt about it - it can be like herding kittens at times. Especially at the beginning of the course when anxious mothers are waiting nervously outside the shala, directly visible to the...ir focus-challenged child. Afterwards, I left that class with mixed feelings. On one hand I felt extremely drained - I had put so much work into the preparation of the course and the class planning that I just wanted everything to be perfectly executed. it is absolutely paramount that a Kids Yoga teacher is engaged every second of every moment so my preparation was well-founded, yet it is also important to remember that not everything goes absolutely to plan with kids - and sometimes the stuff that comes up organically is what gives rise to the true wisdom of the practice. The small breakthroughs I had - even in the first week - reminded me how important it is for kids to engage with the practice. And how much young children **need** the practice. Two things that stood out from week 1: 1. We discussed the question, "What does mindfulness mean?" and Lina - 7 - defined it as, "when your mind is not in the past, not in the future but happily right here, right now and when you try and show care in your thoughts at this moment." Wow - I think Ive met MY teacher. 2. A mother of one of my 5-year-old students came to my 6AM (adult!) vinyasa class the following morning and commented that her husband noted how calm their child was after yoga and how he enquired whether he "could do yoga everyday". THAT is why some yoga teachers choose the hard path that is Kids Yoga! (Big shout-out to Joey Myers who - as a diligent studio owner - felt compelled to stay the whole time to help me with parent enquiries and administration in the first week, even though it was completely my responsibility. Its so nice to know that he sees the Pups as his babies too ) Andybbear Photography #heartmelt #kidsyoga #UpPup #UpDogMelbourne #yogakids #childrensyoga #4pyoga #moniquerobin #moniquerobinyoga #yogawithdrawals #yogaeverydamnday #yoga #yogi #yogini #yogalife #yogalove #grateful #gratitude #alwaysastudent #yogamama #yogamum #yogamom #yogateacher #yogateacherlife #abundance #meditation #mindfulness #breathe #prana #tribe #positivevibes

10.01.2022 After a two-week break from teaching and a reduction in my schedule going forward (to focus more on healing and self-love), I cannot tell you how much JOY I got from kicking teaching off this morning with a 930AM Hot Flow @kulayoga in Hampton . It is so nice to be back here - my beacon home. Come and join me here at 6AM this Wednesday. If you havent checked out Kula Hampton, you MUST!!! 10.01.2022 FEEL it all! I feel Ive been plonked in the middle of the most vast and untouched snowfield to ever be seen. How am I going to stay warm and protected? Its whiteness and brightness forces me to squeeze my eyes tightly shut - I know the blinding light of its vastness offers me a beacon towards a truth that has always been there; but now it is so illuminated that I can see that it has always been hidden in plain sight. Now we are all forced to face it: We need to ask ours...elves a very real question: What IS home if this house were physically contained in makes us feel so isolated? Why are our hearts broken? Why is loneliness a key word in this forced opportunity to be at home with our family... our children? Please lets all take this time to truly face what fears stillness brings to the surface. Lets use whatever teachings we have (Yoga? Religion?) to learn to sit WITH these feelings until the wisdom thats within all of us truly reveals what it is that has been holding our broken hearts together - has that glue been our busyness affliction; our career; our hero parenting; our need to serve others without serving Self. Whatever it is that has been so desperately holding the pieces of our broken hearts together, I implore us all to use this time to find a more sustainable binding agent... perhaps the willingness to express to one another that we are afraid and scared (not just now... but in the past too)? Perhaps giving way to a cry that makes our bones rattle? Perhaps honouring a decision to love from the depths of our newly-exposed imperfect humanness? #fuckcorona #corona #love #family #fear #isolation #kindness #isolation #warmth #heart #heartbroken #feltexperience #yoga #religion #snow #illuminate #bleak See more

08.01.2022 Sibling Love fills my heart like no other. This phot was taken a while ago when out of the corner of my eye, my anxiety kicked in, having noticed the Bubbas Charli and Sascha standing atop the kitchen table - like it was damn-well okay to disrespect me like that. But then I was gifted the space to not react immediately - they were gifting me with a demonstration of the love that they share at a time when I feel vulnerable about my success as a mother; they were gifting me ...with that eye gaze at a time when I felt scared that I hadnt taught them well about love; they gifted me with that embrace at a time when I plagued myself with guilt about being too-in-my-own-head to teach them the importance of physical affection. This photo came to mind when my family (with their eyes rolling, as they preempted the delivery of a novel!) asked me at lunch yesterday what my words of wisdom were about this time of year. This is what arrived from the flashback to this photo: We all had to go around the table and give a line of wisdom (everyone is as eye-rolling when it came to my turn). This was mine; If your Christmas list was short this year then it was your heart writing to Santa, not your hands. Find gratitude for that for your heart can speak so much more articulately than the words written by hand. May you receive more than your heart can hold..: and anything that spills over, catch it in your hands as tangible evidence that your heart is SO full. And then turn to someone who has been pissing you off in 2019 and hand the overflow to them. Be the light. Open your heart to allow the light to guide you.
07.01.2022 I smell summer!!! We salute the sun to acknowledge it as the soul and source of all life. And then we have the ocean - the richest source of prana; our life force. It is no wonder that a sunny day at the beach is akin to being handed the key to unlocking abundance in the realms of our human experience; that is, returning to less and thereby accessing the unbridled joy found in the gifts we already have available to us. #joy #abundance #gratitude #grateful #mindfulness #less #lessismore #wisdom #prana #lifeisbeautiful #lifeforce #lifeisgood #sun #lifesource #soulsource #summer #summertime #sunnies #sunsalutation #suryanamaskar #summerlovinyoga #summervibes #sunshine
07.01.2022 "Spiritual materialism is rampant & a life filled with spirit is a rarity. I dont care how many crystals you have, how vegan your food is, or whether your Venus is in Jupiter since the last time you blamed your problems on the moon. If the way we carry and express ourselves condemns others while lifting ourselves, then were as off-target as the people were condemning. I drink with the thinkers and smoke with the preachers & Ive never met a good man that believed he has th...e answers. Let your personality be your greatest work of art, and let your actions weave a thread of unity. Laugh at the voice(s) in your head, befriend your ego before you listen to that bullshit that tells you to destroy it. Thats McDonalds spirituality -- even attempting to get rid of ego means you want to avoid this and move towards that -- creating more of the same inner conflict youre trying to avoid. Inner silence and enviable peace doesnt come from the avoidance of life as it is, It comes from moving as deeply into life as you can. The only way out is in & the only way beyond is through." Bryan Ellis I actually love this. My name is Monique and I am such a victim of socially constructed spirituality. I do feel very genuinely that it resonates with me - but how invested have I been into the inquiry of, why? Enough to share with others whilst remaining morally accountable? I sometimes (/often) subscribe - and then espouse - the very teachings that conform to the constructs noted herein. I do this on a platform that teaching yoga provides. Thus, next step In my development as an authentic, less-frilly Self: answer the question, is fast-food spirituality bad for my health and the health of others? And if life is fast, and we need quick answers, can we then consume fast-food spirituality in moderation? And in fact, would doing so provide us with more balance than cutting it out altogether?
05.01.2022 Immense gratitude for all that 2018 brought my way. Not least of which was the opportunity to share the teachings of this amazing practice with the remarkable and receptive community @updogyoga.melbourne. I will be eternally grateful for having been given such a generous platform for personal growth; for the connections I made with others and for the pure joy I shared with many very special people along the way. All of which only became possible because of the opportunitie...s I was afforded at UpDog. UpDog truly was such a huge part of my growth in 2018. It is humbling to reflect back on the past year and even try and quantify the wealth of deep human connection that came my way inside those four walls at the UpDog studio on Carslile St. Based on that fact alone, my cup is overflowing more than I could ever explain. Come 2019, things are now moving in a different direction. My sincerest apologies for not having the opportunity to say goodbye and thank the UpDog community in-person for all the support and love I have been shown over the past year. For that I am truly sorry (especially to my little UpPups!). Whilst feeling sentimental about all that was, I am incredibly excited to see all that unfolds in 2019. Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart to the UpDog community - students and teachers alike. Namaste See more
05.01.2022 Bubba Charli, newly six! Trust her to find her way to the pinnacle of my energising backbend. (I bet she has it figured that she too can absorb the energetic qualities of the asana by being atop!). I have no doubt that she will always make sure she receives lifes highest vibrations (no need to put your hands in anjali mudra, bubba). I love this crazy, pint-sized party animal with all my and I love opening up the front lines of my body to create that disco-type-energy I need to keep up with her and her three amigos each day! @andybbearphotography #backbend #energising #urdhvadhanurasana #yogamom #parentchild #yogainspiration #yoga #yogamum #yogamama #kidsyoga #yogaeverydamnday

03.01.2022 Summer Plait Signing Out? As I plaited my hair today (a distinctly summery do), I couldnt help but feel as though it was an ode to a departing summer. I was surprised by my preemptive nostalgic reaction. After all - how ridiculous; here I was on a beautiful summer day mourning a summer that clearly hadnt yet left. After noting that I had mistakenly positioned myself in a moment that was yet to come (and on that basis, is never guaranteed to arrive), I thanke...d my Being for returning me to presence so that me and my plait could enjoy the sunshine . I am so grateful for the gift I give myself each day - the opportunity to make shapes on my yoga mat that remind me that my diaphragm, my intercostal muscles etc arent used to create the breath. Rather, I (as the alchemist of my own journey) use the breath to create a narrative with my diaphragm, my intercostal muscles etc. Every time I breath into parts of my body that are sensating (and sometimes even emoting), I unlock the story that is tightly held in those parts of my body. And like all well-written stories, grammar is present to create pauses and spaces in-between. Asana for me writes the storyline of my body. Pranayama for me, offers the story of my body the grammatical corrections it needs to create pauses and space. It is in those spaces I become present and available to pay homage to the smallest of moments. And so whilst the sun shines, you can guarantee that me and my summer plait will be present. #pranayama #yogasana #asana #plaits #summerplaits #alchemist #gratitude #yogaeverydamnday #mybodystory #presence #pranayama #breath #breathe #breatheinbreatheout #melbourneyoga #yogimum #mumof4 #moniquerobinyoga #moniquerobin #4pyoga See more
02.01.2022 6AM tomorrow @theyogaspacemelbourne I hope for it to be a special class as it will be my last for a few weeks I will be exploring the idea of using the Asana practice as a tool to simplify the mental construct of anxiety and fear by transitioning away from the complexities of thoughts and into one of the most sublime gifts offered in our human experience - the raw and simple sensations felt by our physical bodies.
