24.01.2022 Guula Ngurra National Park Today I visited the newly gazetted Guula Ngurra National Park. A new national park which has been created specifically for the conservation of the Koalas. I welcome the NSW Government’s initiative to protect and preserve our critically endangered species and threatened biospheres. However, I believe their good intentions will be undermined by the NSW NPWS’s management practices. ... Not surprisingly, I was greeted by a locked gate and sign which said, Park Closed: 17/09/20-28/08/20. I then phoned the local NSW NPWS office and was advised the park will be closed for at least another three months. Though no sign suggested otherwise, this is a common pattern I have seen at many national parks across NSW. This is an example of their locked gate policy, where the taxpayers can be locked out at any time for any given reason. I obtained permission to view the park from an adjoining private property. I was shocked by the condition of the park; from the drought affected flora, the dieback and the vast expanse of combustible fuel loads. This is no habitat for the conservation of koalas. It is these very tinderboxes that have decimated our wildlife and forest ecology. It is a shame that land management experts have been gaged during the Royal Commission. #conservation #australia #nsw #koalas #bushfires #drought #lockedup #conservationist #nationalparks #forest #ecosystem

24.01.2022 An old god snow gum in the high country, this was taken a few weeks after the fires ripped through here. It survived thanks to the managed private land around it. The high country is rich in Australian indigenous and pioneering history, there is a story to tell at the turn of every corner and at the top of every peak. Switch yourself off under the snow gums, gaze into the heart of our cosmos and listen to the galloping of brumbies rumbling through the cool mountain air. 24.01.2022 A welcome update to the latest Drought index map of NSW. Looking forward to the breaking of the drought this year. The vast areas of our forests have restarted their cycle of regrowth. The regrowth will be denser than ever before, increasing the risk of an even more severe bushfire season, than the 19-20 season, in 5-10 years time.

24.01.2022 With vast areas of our public fire trails locked out to responsible recreational 4WD tourers, NSW is one of the most restricted places in the world for 4WD touring and camping. This is due to the bad eggs in the community. I’m growing sick of people that don’t respect our environment. Wherever I go, someone’s dumped their rubbish, torn up a track or campground or deliberately and indiscriminately chopped down trees and destroyed our natural assets. I’m also frustrated by t...he NSW NPWS’s locked gate policies, which claim to protect the environment from 4WDs. Well, clearly after the fires, there’s nothing left to preserve. Especially when all the unmanaged fire trails failed to protect the environment from the progression of the fire. NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, it’s time to seriously consider a lock and key system to keep the good eggs in and the bad eggs out. This can be managed by Service NSW and allow you to approve or deny access based on driving record and several other factors.

23.01.2022 I’ve spent several weeks off-track assessing the recovery of the bush within the Blue Mountains region west of Sydney. Overall, recovery has been better than expected, however there remain significant areas of bush that resembles a wasteland. It’s been one year since fire had impacted this area [pictured], the ecological recovery here has been slow. Very little epicormic growth and very little signs of wildlife including birds. #bush #recovery #australia #nsw #bushfires #wildfires #drought #rain #ecology #environment #bushwalking #hiking #trekking #adventure #camping #forest #conservation

23.01.2022 No this isn’t Tasmania. It’s NSW. However, very few truly old-growth forests remain in NSW. Most of our bush was indiscriminately logged for over a century and followed by poorly managed regrowth. This is a 400 year old swamp gum, one of the oldest and largest trees in NSW. It is surrounded by dense regrowth which must be managed to protect these old trees, the koala population and the woodland forest ecology that exists here. ... #australia #nsw #ecology #tree #old #giant #gumtree #wilderness #conservation #koala #forest #woods #adventure #explore #sydney #flora

22.01.2022 Unsurprisingly The Guardian Australia released a fact check article on the bushfires and to bust the myth of the lock up of national parks. It is one of a handful of similar myth busting news articles. The link to it can be found here: https://www.theguardian.com//factcheck-are-national-parks-... For the record, I believe in climate change, it is irrefutable. However, the observed evidence, and outcome is before me - here at Kanangra-Boyd National Park. 7 Months and very little epicormic growth in some areas.

21.01.2022 WARRAGAMBA DAM REACHES 100% CAPACITY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY 5 YEARS. From nearly 40% to 100%. A continent of droughts and flooding rains.... We must now seriously address the issue of flooding in Western Sydney, the communities along the Hawkesbury/Nepean catchment. We can’t afford another natural disaster. One more significant rain event will spell disaster for the people living in Western Sydney. Over 80% of the World Heritage-listed wilderness surrounding Lake Burragorang has been decimated in the recent bushfires and most of it will never recover. 17.01.2022 BREAKING: NSW GOVERNMENT'S SINGLE LARGEST PURCHASE OF LAND IN HISTORY. I welcome the government's purchase of land for annexation to National Parks. The region contains unique and highly sensitive ecosystems and indigenous artefacts which have been protected by the O'Connor family for decades. ... Will public ownership positively change the status quo of conservation efforts in this region? Most likely, however, I have two concerns: 1. Will this new national park be highly-restricted or locked up? Neighbouring Sturt National Park is locked out to the public, with highly restricted access only for road-trippers that travel along the major road corridor. One thing that's almost certain, in my opinion, is that responsible 4WD tourers will be locked out of this park. 2. Will adjoining private landholders be disadvantaged? Extreme-green bureaucracy, Carr-era lock ups and the rules and regulations imposed on private landholders adjoining National Parks is an existing and ongoing generational-long issue. The 2003 and 2019/20 (so far) Royal Commissions into the bushfires has revealed significant issues between private landholders and NSW NPWS imposed laws on what can or can't be done on private land. This is notwithstanding the management practises of parks which have contributed to the severity of bushfires. The NSW Minister for Environment, Matt Kean said: "we're seeing something that pretty much only been accessible to one family for the past century". Mr Kean is passionate about annexing new national parks for the preservation of our environment and enjoyment for future generations. I agree with Mr Kean. Let's hope that the enjoyment is all-inclusive and that the public can be given reasonable access to this property that was paid for and will be managed by our tax dollars. I fundamentally support and champion the values of conservation. However, those values must be sensible, responsible and sustainable for the environment, and backed by observed and tested science that has not been perverted by [ideology] culture wars, politics and agendas. So far, the complete lock up and 'let it all regenerate' strategy has been destructive to our environment and has impeded on our personal liberty and freedoms, particularly for farmers that practice responsible and sustainable land management practices.

17.01.2022 Australia isn't called the land of drought and flooding rains for no reason. Our climate and vast biospheres are cyclic, we must all remember that. Australia's droughts are historically followed by floods and periods of wetter than average conditions. Anecdotally, the more severe a drought period, the more likely it is succeeded with a severe wet period. That's what dams are for, to bank the most vital resource on this planet. Surprisingly the Bureau of Meteorology has been... accurate about the big wet to date and it looks to continue into summer. Expect floods - severe floods. This is Australia and we have built our homes, farms and infrastructure - our livelihoods, on the edge of mother nature's forces.

15.01.2022 I’ve been koala counting in areas identified as koala habitat west of the Great Dividing Range. In this particular region, my count for the full day was: 1 koala within a 3-4 Square KM area on foot. Of course, it is incredibly hard to spot a koala in the wild, I’m certain I have missed a few. ... I will continue independently assessing the major habitats identified over the coming weeks and speak with a broad range of stakeholders on the conservation of our koalas before I formulate an opinion on the new planning laws. Conservation must be mutual, balanced and emanate from the soul of every Australian. It must be backed by sensible science and observed practices that are politically and ideologically neutral. #koala #Australia #NSW #Conservation #wildlife

15.01.2022 For over a century, the ancient giants and woodlands of Tasmania were indiscriminately logged. As a direct result of widespread logging, the new ecology that formed [dense regrowth forests] was followed by high intensity bushfires. Many parts of the state still lie in total ecological ruin. Sustainable land management is a two-way street.

14.01.2022 BREAKING: THE NSW GOVERNMENT SECURES MORE LAND FOR THE CONSERVATION OF KOALAS This week the NSW Government announced the gazettal of one national park in the Southern Highlands: The 3558-hectare Guula Ngurra National Park, and the proposal of a new national park in Sydney: Georges River Koala Reserve. I welcome the NSW Government's continued purchase of land for gazettal into NSW National Parks. ... However, my concerns around the NSW NPWS's land management practices [including feral animals] and public access remain the same. I am very familiar with the region around the new Guula Ngurra National Park. The park in its current form is a tinderbox. Most of the land was previously cleared, most of it is comprised of dense regrowth forest of very poor ecological value [in my opinion], with the exception of a small koala population. It is a miracle the Green Wattle Creek fire didn't impact the current national park 8 months ago. After a period of above-average rainfall [which we are experiencing now], the growth in this national park will become denser, which if followed by a dry period, will destroy the good intentions of the NSW Government in the event of a bushfire. This is notwithstanding the impact of heavy fuels and undergrowth on the forest ecology over the long-term without an impact by fire. Expensive research programs, at the expense of the taxpayers, are unnecessary to state the obvious. National parks such as this must strategically begin hazard reduction programs before its too late. We cannot afford to lose any more of our biospheres through intense fire and poor land management practices. We must adapt to the changing macro climate.

13.01.2022 One year ago today I was visiting ancient churches and relics deep within the mountains of a tiny Caucuses nation. Armenia is the only free and democratic nation in the region, it is surrounded by hostile neighbours run by oppressive dictators and oligarchs. Armenia is one of the oldest surviving nations on earth, over 4,000 years. Some of the oldest relics are found here including the worlds oldest shoe, winery and a Stonehenge thousands of years older than the English Stone...henge. It is a nation with a proud yet sad history of persistent genocides and persecution. Today, there is an active invasion attempt on this tiny Christian nation by Turkey and Azerbaijan. 11.01.2022 It’s been a real privilege to participate in the NSW Independent Inquiry. I welcome the findings of the NSW Independent Inquiry into the 2019-2020 Bushfires. It is encouraging to see that some of my concerns were addressed by the Inquiry.... As with previous inquiries and Royal Commissions, governments have been slow to implement recommendations or have failed. I am cautiously optimistic the Berejiklian Government will be an exception. The biggest threat is the autocratic bureaucracy and the complex legal frameworks that will need to be changed or repealed. A copy of the recommendations can be found by following the link on this post.

11.01.2022 We can all make a big difference for conservation. You could start from simple things like cleaning up rubbish in the bush to participating in environmental rehabilitation initiatives. 11.01.2022 Sydney's Warragamaba dam should have spilled several times since February 2020. The Sydney Catchment Authority has been monitoring inflows quite well over the past 11 months and has managed to stop the dam spilling on these several occasions by conducting a controlled release into Warragamba River. You can see this strategy working by observing Warragamba's water level before and after the moment SCA releases significant volumes of water from Warragamaba Weir into the river.... This almost perfectly levels off the rising water levels in Lake Burragorang and assists with sustaining rising water levels and maintaining dam levels at just below 100% capacity. This strategy does not safeguard Western Sydney from a medium, heavy or catastrophic flood. Warragamba dam is at capacity, we are experiencing a La Nina event with our climate. NSW can not afford another natural disaster. Sydney Water NSW Government

04.01.2022 An old god of the Outback, a river red gum growing on the banks of a dry river bed in Outback South Australia. This particular red must be at least 400-500 years old judging by its size. I can feel the energy around this tree as I sit beside it with the ancient indigenous clans that used to inhabit this region. After the arrival of the First Fleet most of these ancient trees were unsustainably cut down and the biospheres around them altered, slowly killing them off. ... River reds are one of my favourite Aussie icons. They survive the harshest of conditions and can grow up to 1,000 years. #aussie #outback #history #trees #tree #old #bushman #stories #nature #southaustralia #nsw #flindersranges #lakeeyre #desert #conservation #environment #offroad #explore #wild #4x4

03.01.2022 My remote area walks through the Blue Mountains continued this week. I was visited in the night by feral dogs scavenging whatever is left of the bush. Fire impacted this area almost one year ago. Epicormic growth seems healthy and reasonably dense considering the severe impact of fire. ... Vast regions still are void of any growth, they remain barren and desolate. #bushfires #remote #wildfires #australia #aussiehiker #aussie #conservation #walking #trekking #camping #hiking #bluemountains #nsw #me #trees #fire #volunteer #bushman #environment #forest

03.01.2022 Tasmania’s wilderness areas contain one of the worlds oldest and tallest trees. When Tasmania opens its doors in December (fingers crossed) I encourage everyone to go and see these natural marvels. We are incredibly fortunate through the tireless efforts of conservationists to have these living among us today.

01.01.2022 I came across a hermit during my two-day walk to this spot on the Murray. We stand just a few kilometres downstream of where the Mighty Murray emerges from the ground in the remote Pilot Wilderness. From here the Murray weaves its way 2,500km to the Southern Ocean, nourishing Australians along its journey. The vast majority of Australia’s food is produced by the water that flows through the Murray-Darling basin. #australia #mountains #nsw #vic #isolation #remote #wilderness #river #murrayriver #themightymurray #water #forest #clean #air #trekking #walking #exploring #bushwalking

01.01.2022 No border passes here. One foot in NSW other in VIC. The headwaters of the mighty Murray River in the remote Pilot Wilderness in the NSW and VIC high country. Further up this point the Murray emerges from under the ground as a spring and weaves its way to the Southern Ocean feeding and nourishing Australia along the way. It is a 1-2 day walk to this point depending on where you start your walk, this is a significant historic and geographic region.... #australia #nsw #vic #border #murrayriver #river #history #wilderness #adventure #bushwalking #remote #isolation #bush #hiking #trekking #mountains
