25.01.2022 Poeppel Corner The meeting place of SA, NT & Qld 170km west of Birdsville via the QAA Line; 340km east of Mt Dare via the French Line... In 1884 when Augustus Poeppel (pronounced Peppell - see first pic) carried out his survey of the SA/Qld border and then the NT/Qld border he had supposedly marked it with a post or peg every mile and a major post every 10 mile. For the more significant Corner Post where the three states met, he had a 7-foot long post cut from a coolibah tree on the Mulligan River flats some 100km east and dragged to its resting place by camel. A short time later Poeppel discovered his survey chain (22 yards long) was stretched by over an inch, or so the story or excuse goes; maybe old Poeppel just mucked up as he was under investigation for having a bit too much to drink, by all accounts. So the last section of the SA/Qld border was re-surveyed by a young Larry Wells (see pic of Wells on lead camel), Poeppel’s 2IC and he placed the corner post in its current position in late 1884, near the crest of a sand ridge just to the east of what we now call, Poeppel Lake. Because of the relatively poor standard of the survey equipment of the day, especially for determining Longitude (if you want a good read about the 200 year or more search for a practical method to accurately plot Longitude, read Longitude by Dava Sobel), the border post, even after Wells’ re-positioning, was still out by modern mapping standards by about 110m. And now today we’ve discovered, it keeps shifting as Australia drifts north, but that’s another story. Next seen by Ted Colson in 1936 when he crossed the desert on camels, the post was recovered by Reg Sprigg and his family (of Arkaroola fame- see pic) when they made the first vehicular crossing of the Simpson Desert in 1963 and donated it to the SA Survey Museum. The replica (see pic) that stands at the corner today, along with the concrete pillar (see pic) erected in 1968 by the SA Dept of Lands is visited by nearly every Simpson Desert traveller, which number over 5000 each year (well, maybe not this year)! But the original Corner Post vanished with the demise of the Survey Museum. I went looking for it in 2016 and while it took two visits to Adelaide and numerous phone calls I finally tracked it down to being under a dusty white sheet in a musty building of a museum warehouse in a leafy suburb of Adelaide (see pic). It was in remarkably good condition but sadly it went back under the cloth and into the warehouse, after I left. If you want to read a book about the adventures of the Sprigg family check out, 'Dune is a four letter word'.

19.01.2022 A photo finish ... Zeka Spur Track repairs finished. Report from Mike Dower - Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger, Foothills and Southern Alps Less than a week ago Zeka Spur Track on the Wonnangatta Icon Drive was impassable due to a large slip on one of the switch backs at the southern end near the Howitt Plains. A mobilisation plan was put in place by Parks Victoria to engage a local earthmoving contractor and attempt to stabilise the slip and remove the material from the trac...k surface. This work is always challenging, and access isn’t easy especially in current weather conditions. Thanks to Brian Traill for camping on site for 3 nights next to his D6 and getting this work done so Parks Victoria could ensure access to Wonnangatta was available for this coming weekend. The conditions in alpine locations are vastly different to what they have been in the dry October’s for the last several years. Lots of springs and small creeks are flowing well along with the larger tributaries. Stay safe and tread lightly. Enjoy the weekend!

17.01.2022 If weather conditions remain suitable, our crews will ignite piles of debris left over from the 2019-20 bushfires to reduce hazards around the Cape Conran Campg...round in far East Gippsland and make it safe for public access. The heaps will be ignited today, Wednesday August 19 and will be patrolled for the rest of the week. You may see or smell smoke, and some forest and park roads and tracks could be closed until the burns are completed and the area is safe for public access. Signs will be in place. We encourage those who are sensitive to smoke to remain indoors and keep windows closed until the smoke passes. We understand that smoke from planned burns may cause concern. Under the current public health advice our planned burning program can continue for now. If that advice changes, we will make any adjustments necessary in consultation with Victorian Department of Health & Human Services, Environment Protection Authority Victoria, CFA (Country Fire Authority) and Emergency Management Victoria. Our crews are adhering to appropriate physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure we can safely continue operations across the state. To find out when and where planned burns are happening near you go to www.vic.gov.au/plannedburns or call 1800 226 226.

11.01.2022 The remarkable Aboriginal cultural heritage of the Grampians continues to be revealed, with recent rediscoveries of ancient cultural material in the national pa...rk. Known as ‘Gariwerd’ to Traditional Owners, the Grampians is home to precious native plants, animals and ancient cultural heritage, including the richest concentration of rock art in Victoria. Archaeological excavations of Aboriginal sites in the park indicate occupation sites that are around 22,000 years old. We have a legislated responsibility to protect these cultural rediscoveries, so will be putting in place protection zones and signage at two locations so that people don’t inadvertently enter the areas and cause harm. The protection zones cover areas used for rock climbing and bushwalking, while other sections currently remain open to the public. A long-term approach to protecting these places will be determined by a new management plan, a draft of which is expected to be released for further public consultation later this year. The Grampians landscape is embedded with remarkable natural and cultural values, much of which is still being identified. It’s a privilege to partner with Traditional Owners as the Gariwerd cultural landscape is further revealed and to ensure these special places and stories are carried forward to be shared for generations to come. https://fal.cn/39J88

07.01.2022 BlazeAid documentary launching at 4pm today, available via a link to watch online. Here is a final little preview for a film that captures the spirit of mateship and why we volunteer our time.
06.01.2022 KHA stalwart Klaus Hueneke was so moved by the loss of the High Country Huts in the 2020 fires that he came out of retirement to write a book on one of his favo...urite huts 4 Mile Hut, and to raise awareness and support for the hut rebuilding program. Hi, My name is Klaus, I’m the author of Huts of the High Country, first published almost 40 years ago. I’m what some call an old timer. No, not ancient like Alan Andrews, Ted Winter, Elyne Mitchell, Paddy Pallin, Harry Hill or other mountain legends grew to be, but inching towards 80. I’ve just had a few days paddling and surfing at Tomakin on the Tomaga River. Arriving home I was greeted with a pallet of books wrapped in enough shiny gladwrap to cover a thousand lunches. It was No 14 of my books. No 13 seemed an unlucky end to my book writing so I pressed on with the life story of the hut that is closest to my heart Four Mile near Kiandra - and not far from Mt Tabletop, the name I coined my little business in 1987. Please order here if you don’t wish to read further: WWW.Tabletoppressbooks.com. I started ‘The Life of a Mountain Hut’ about ten years ago, wrote much more of it last year but was stopped dead in my tracks when a wild fire razed 4 Mile in January this year. I was devastated, big time. So was the spirit of the hut. But the spirit would not die, no way. It roared back into life about April and told me in no uncertain terms that I had to finish cum hell or high water. ‘Okay, okay, I hear you, fair crack of the whip.’ It also told me it wants to be rebuilt just as it always was and in the same place. No doubt about it.
05.01.2022 Seen something? If so, please call 136 186 and lodge a report.
05.01.2022 Congratulations to BlazeAid and all who volunteer tirelessly under it banner.
02.01.2022 Great to hear of tours re-opening ... and this one is a beauty!

02.01.2022 Cool to touch - safe to leave ...
01.01.2022 It’s been great to have the rain, but it’s kept our recovery crews busy assessing damages from landslips, including this one at Cutts Creek between Buchan and E...nsay. We get more landslips and slumps when fire-affected areas get heavy rainfall over a short time, especially after years of drought. Our FFMVic crews are also assessing low level crossings at Club Terrace and completing rehabilitation and fencing work on private property at Cann River, Tamboon and Clifton Creek. Our Working for Victoria teams have been clearing tracks of fallen trees and debris at Back Break, Long Point, Stoney Creek and Sandy Point Tracks in the Waygara State Forest north-west of Orbost; and removing hazardous trees at White Rock Track near Bruthen. Our crews are continuing to adhere to appropriate physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure we can safely continue operations across the state.
