24.01.2022 This Sunday, March 8, we will be hitting the well trodden bay trails in the Blackrock Bound (Black rock clock tower to Dendy St Brighton). It's an out and back... and there will be 5/10/15 km options (add more kms as required), mostly running on tracks overlooking the bay and cliffs. We will kick off ~7.30am from outside the playground park/clock tower heading north along the tracks. We are spoilt for choice in post run cafes. We will try for Cafe Odo(opposite the clock tower), although it is very populate so we have back up options. Unsure of pace groups yet, will depend on who can make it. It's quite awesome views on a good day. Hope you can get along and join us. All members and non members are welcome to join us on this run, so please invite family and friends to have a nice Sunday morning run

22.01.2022 See if you can run at marathon World Record pace for just 2.2km at the short race (1 lap) at the Jolong Park Fun Fun on November 10. There will be special prizes for anyone that can hit the world record marathon pace for the 2.2km. The paces required are 2.52 per km pace for males and 3.12 per km pace for females. Thus the finishing times required will be 6.18 or faster for males and 7.03 or faster for females. Just think, if you were in the marathon you would have to run a further 40km to break the world record!

All welcome. Please invite family and running friends. (it is a flat, traffic free loop for your children or partners to come along and cycle if they wish). Following the fruit muffins near car park we will go to the café at GARDENWORLD, 810 Springvale Rd, Keysborough for a coffee at 9.30am. Cool, maybe damp conditions projected for track sessions tomorrow (Thursday)- embrace it! Don't forget to wear your MELBOURNE PACK singlets at parkrun this week- try Chelsea Bicentennial parkrun- it's a beautiful parkrun with a nice local vibe.

Accommodation/Address: Split Point Cottages, 40 Hopkins St, Aireys Inlet. They are freestanding cottages set on an acre of landscaped native gardens with shared tennis court, outdoor spa and BBQ area. It is s short walk to cafes, restaurants, beach and hotel. HOW TO GET THERE: Driving: Aireys Inlet is 1hr 34min drive from the Melbourne CBD. Take the M1 from Melbourne to Geelong. At Waurn Ponds take the exit towards C134/Torquay/Anglesea/Great Ocean Rd. Follow Anglesea Rd/C134 to Great Ocean Rd/B100 in Aireys Inlet. Juniors will have the opportunity to get a lift to and from the camp from Edithvale. If you are a driver and can assist with transporting runners to and from the camp please let me know. Talk to the other runners and work out who drives, who is a passenger, etc. I would expect passengers to fully reimburse drivers for petrol costs. I can fix you up with a lift with another runner if you don’t know anyone else attending. By sharing these costs around, it will be cheap for all. Rail and bus: Catching a train to Geelong then bus to Aireys Inlet takes about 3 hours 15 minutes and costs $18-$26 each way from Southern Cross Station- so add on more if coming from further away in Melbourne. Fly and bus/car: Take a plane to Avalon Airport (Geelong) then take a bus to Geelong and a bus to Aireys Inlet. It will take about 1hr 15min on buses from the airport. Or it is about a 45min drive from the airport to Aireys Inlet if you hire a car or Uber. Meals and Food: Obviously, nutrition is important because of the amount of training that we will be doing. You are expected to prepare your own breakfast, lunch and usually dinner, unless eating out. Everyone is self-catering. Each cottage is equipped with a kitchen which has stoves, ovens, microwaves, fridges, bench tops, and cupboard space. There is a General Store in Aireys Inlet that is close to the cottages. There are supermarkets in Anglesea- 10km away (you may want to pop in there on your way to the camp) If you have special dietary requirements, you will need to look after yourself by bringing your appropriate foods. A popular place for dinner is the Aireys Pub. The own also boasts some restaurants, cafes and Seafood Take Away. Things to bring: 1. Training gear (training shoes, stopwatch, racing flats, singlets, long and short-sleeve t-shirts, running bras, tights, socks, tracksuit and water bottle). Be prepared for wet weather and potentially cold weather whilst running. Thus tracksuits, running gloves, beanies and all weather jackets will be very handy. Please remember water bottles. Clearly label all your gear. 2. Casual gear for all types of weather 3. Bathers for body surfing and swimming in Ocean, plus for spa, 4. 05.01.2022 What a massive weekend of running. Dozens of Melbourne Packers lined up in parkrun Australia events around the country. It was great seeing our members wearing... the blue and white singlets at Chelsea Bicentennial parkrun Athletics Victoria competition recommenced for the 2019-20 season after the holiday break. Our runners were in fine form. Michael Kernahan completed the first of two podium finishes for the weekend winning his tactical 1500m race in 4.21 with a kick over the last 300m that Mo Farah would have been proud of. Nikniks Catlover Nikki Lesberg smashed her 1500m PB by 6 seconds to come 2nd in 4.47. Jo Pratt was strong in running a 400m PB of 1.13 and a 1500 m seasons best of 5.21. Will Orchard ran a sensational 4.52 in his 1500m, which included a massive last lap. Hudson Bucci blew out a few vacation cobwebs to record 4.59. Sunday saw Nick Jansen go out at close to 2.40 marathon pace in the Cadbury Marathon in Hobart. He was very game to hang in there when the going got tough to make his debut in 3.05. The biggest trail event in Victoria, the Two Bays Trail Run, was held on the Mornington Peninsula today. The race director is none other than Melbourne Packer Rohan Day! The 28km and 56km events are not races for the faint hearted, with rigid qualifying times required just to get a start. Michael Kernahan notched his second podium finish for the weekend with a mighty 2nd place finish in the 28km. He ran faster than the previous race record and was very close behind the winner, an international athlete from France. 10 other Packers did themselves proud- all running to the best of their ability on the day. RESULTS: 28km- Michael Kernahan 1.45 Simon Glendenning 2.15 Scotty Orchard 2.35 Emilie Barkley 2.37 Morgan Louise Deegan 2.57 Carissa Souroop 3.12 Lucy McGarva 3.14 Lorna Grbin 3.26 Hannah Littler 3.44 56km- Stuart Hughes 5.23 Clarky Clark 6.17 Kang Lim 6.26

05.01.2022 Yet another sponsor has kindly come on board for the Jolong Park Fun Run, to be staged in bayside Melbourne on November 10. This sponsor is BakSound. The 28 winners/placegetters across all the age groups in the 2.2km and 6.6km races will be given vouchers so they get the premium version of BakSound for free. What is Baksound? Give your performance a boost with BakSound!... BakSound is a proud supporter of this fun run, and all first place finishes will receive a premium version of the BakSound (https://www.facebook.com/baksoundapp/) app from the App Store. BakSound is a new Australian iphone app that can help improve your training, technique and performance. It allows you to record voice memos to yourself and play them over your favourite tunes you listen to on your iphone while training, preparing for a race or relaxing. For example, if you need to improve a specific technique, you can record a reminder and schedule it to play at timed intervals while you train. This will help you reinforce the technique until it becomes habit. You will notice that it is even more effective because it is your own voice reminding you. You can boost performance by recording positive self talk, inspirational quotes, instructions from your coach, motivating chants from teammates, or your 'why'. Use these prior to a race to get in the zone or during training to push yourself that bit harder. Features of the premium version include: - Unlimited recordings. You can have as many folders and recordings in those folders as you like. You can easily deselect any recordings you don't want to play. - Auto trim. The app will automatically trim silences before and after your recording. - Your choice of timing. You can select the time between messages and loop them indefinitely or for a set period. - Custom sorting. Easily play your recordings by name, time or randomly. - Soften background music. This option softens your background music so your recordings stand out more. BakSound can also be beneficial for mental health, self esteem, eating disorders, personal development, and study. 02.01.2022 What can one do in 60 minutes? Most recreational and junior runners I train can complete the majority of their daily running training in 60minutes, apart from t...heir long long. They can do it within 5km of their home. Extra training like strength and stretching can be done indoors at home. Elites, ultra runners, triathletes- beware; your long rides, second daily runs, long runs will be very expensive in Melbourne if logged on STRAVA and you may need to look at altering your training. If anyone needs help in adjusting their training program to fit the stage 4 restrictions, please message me. Your home treadmills may come in handy! To change Kipling’s words a little: If you can fill the unforgiving hour With sixty minutes worth of distance run. Bear this in mind: The world record for the half marathon is 58 minutes. That is a lot of training for one day! Also bear this in mind: The first man to run a sub 4 minute mile, Sir Roger Bannister, rarely trained for more than an hour a day.
