25.01.2022 I started with a keep cup to lighten my single use plastic load. What will you start with? - Jenny

25.01.2022 I decided to push myself this week and instead of buying juices, I made my own. Here's my very own green juice - its just celery. I know its basic, but its great for my joints! I am going to add more fruit & veggies to my next juices. I must remember to take my produce bags shopping with me so that my juices can stay plastic free in every way. What would you add to my celery? - Jenny

24.01.2022 Here's three good reasons to consider making your own glitter with a hole punch and paper; 1. Glitter is a microplastic. 2. Glitter is made from a mixture of aluminium and plastic and as it breaks down it releases nasty chemicals. 3. It's easy, fun for the kids and great for the planet!... We are making our own today out of the colourful @whogivesacrap wrappers! If you dont have colourful paper try using autumn leaves. Jenny @whogivesacrap #glitter #art

23.01.2022 Do you ever find yourself needing plastic alternatives for wrapping or tying up things like parcels, flowers, plants? I found this amazing product at a gorgeous little shop near me. A local artist, Shelly from Tindale Designs, makes this hemp twine and I can honestly say its strong, durable and super handy. I am even going to get a ball for the office to replace plastic cable ties.- Jenny

23.01.2022 A big thank you to all the businesses who have quickly adapted to keep our cupboards and fridges full. One of my local bulk food stores @thestorehousefremantle have just made things so easy by enabling customers to email and phone orders in, packing in brown paper bags or glass and completing with home delivery. This has meant that I can keep my habit of lessening my single use plastic while waiting out COVID 19. Heartfelt thanks! Jenny

21.01.2022 Can you believe its nearly July! That means #plasticfreejuly is starting in a couple of days, and thats had me reflecting on the change I made last year and what thats meant in terms of my plastic consumption. Last year I decided to stop buying bread in plastic bags. I bought myself a couple of reusable bread bags from @onyalife and started either baking my own bread (with the help of the trusty bread machine Ive had for years) or buying it from a bakery in my bags. In t...he year that has passed Ive only bought bread in plastic bags three times! Im quite amazed how Ive been able to change my bread buying habits and by the fact that Ive avoided using at least 100 plastic bread bags in one year. So now I have to choose my target for this years #plasticfreejulychallenge. Have you chosen something to cut out of your life this July? Let us know in the comments - Nicci #plasticfreejuly #plasticalternatives #newhabits

20.01.2022 Simple really - if you dont want to be consuming plastic, its time to say no. It can take some practice but each time you #choosetorefuse it gets easier.- Nicci #lessplastic #saynotoplastic #lesswaste

20.01.2022 Fatty Fridays means take away night in our house. I love it, as I get out of cooking and cleaning up, but it also puts me in a bit of a spin, as how can I ensure I stay plastic free? Over the past few years I have built up a number of things to say that help. Here are the 5 simple things I ask for when ordering; no soy sauce please I have both tamari and soy sauce in glass bottles in the fridge. I love this as it avoids getting those small plastic fish shaped containers an...d foil like satchets. no dipping sauce please I keep chipotle, mayo and sweet chilli in the fridge. no straws please I have a selection of metal straws in the kitchen and in the travel cutlery packs in the cars and my bag. no plastic cutlery please I use our stainless steel cutlery. If we're out and about, I have a travel kit in each car and my bag. no butter please This seems to come with banana bread and has caught me out a few times. I always have butter in the fridge and if I'm out, I am happy to go without. Hope these help to eliminate the little pieces of single use plastic that are added to take away orders. I would love to hear your tips too.

20.01.2022 This pretty much sums up our philosophy here at the.plastic.diet! #smallchanges #onestepatatime #melrobbins

19.01.2022 I love being able to buy seafood in my stainless steel container! I haven't found many businesses willing to do this so was overjoyed when Sealanes Seafood Market said yes. This is their marinara mix in the photo and it's absolutely delicious pan fried with lemon, butter and salt and served with steamy hot pasta. To thank them for supporting me to reduce my single use plastic, I have decided to support them from now on when I buy seafood. It may seem like a small amount of ...plastic bags saved but I like to think that it all adds up to reduce the single use plastic that ends up in our ocean. Imagine if more people were able to do this too. - Jenny @cheeki_bottles #cleanoceans

18.01.2022 Social isolation is the perfect time to tweak! My tweak has to be sorting my pantry. I find buying produce at the bulk food store means that I need containers with a good labelling system. Everyone in the family can find things then, not just me! So I am going to clear the shelves, reorganise and put jars and containers back with clear labelling using the crayon pencils that I found at Jacksons Drawing Supplies. This will make it easier to continue shopping without needing single use plastic -Jenny #jacksonsdrawingsupplies

18.01.2022 The count down to "Plastic Free July" is on. This annual global challenge to refuse single use plastic for the month of July is even more important this year due to the increased use of single use plastics during the pandemic. We are excited to take on the challenge and hope you do too! Jenny #plasticfreejuly #change

18.01.2022 It's celebration time! I successfully got through #plasticfreejuly without falling back into my old habit of buying prepackaged muesli bars for my kids to snack on. I have to admit that it took a bit of effort as I had to start baking instead. I also had to listen to a fair bit of complaining (although that got better as the month went on)! But, we got to eat things like this delicious, healthy carrot cake which I cut and froze so there was always a snack ready. There were a...lso more fresh fruit, vegetables and nuts on the menu and I discovered some new dip recipes I really liked. I love that by trying to reduce our single use plastic consumption, we experienced the hidden benefit of healthier eating. So, now the challenge is to keep the new habits going into August and beyond! How did you go with your #plasticfreejuly challenges? Any great tips to share? - Nicci #plasticfreesnacks #newhabits #lessplastic #choosetorefuse

17.01.2022 What makes me happy when I have to work from home is my fat puppy coffee! Yes, its actually a brand and absolutely delicious. I have the beans ground for my plunger which I now realise was such a perfect gift. It's really solid, made of stainless steel and has poured thousands of cuppa's and lasted 5 years to date. I am thinking it can easily go another 50 and it has not one bit of plastic!! #coffee

17.01.2022 Reducing my plastic consumption has been, and continues to be, a process of creating new habits. My habits are constantly evolving as I discover new alternatives to plastic products or discover new challenges. I'm not sure if I'll ever reach the ultimate goal of producing no plastic waste, but a lifestyle that is constantly moving closer feels pretty good - Nicci #lessplasticwaste #newhabits #goodhabits #continuousimprovement #reduceplastic #waronwaste

17.01.2022 I always thought I would need a yogurt maker to make good yogurt, but this is not the case. I made mine using a big saucepan, thermometer and wooden spoon. The only thing I did buy was a small tub of Greek yogurt (yes, in plastic as I can no longer find yogurt sold in glass jars) for my starter culure. From now on though, I will use my own yogurt as a starter. Such a great quick and easy way to reduce single use plastic. - Jenny I am amazed at how easy it was to make and how... delicious it tastes! All I had to do was pour 2 litres of cows milk (we drink Brownes Dairy lactose free milk and this amount made enough yogurt to last the family for about a week) into a large saucepan and heat til 80 Celsius, then take it off the heat, place the saucepan in the kitchen sink half full of cold water. Once the temperature got to 40 Celsius I took the saucepan out of the sink, added 1 tablespoon of plain Greek Yogurt (starter culture) and stirred. I then poured the heated milk mixture into an airtight container, wrapped it up in a small blanket and placed it in an esky for 8 hours. And as you can see here, it was served with strawberrys this morning for breakfast. Yum!! - Jenny See more

16.01.2022 Start with just one thing today. It could be as simple as saying....no straw please, or remebering to take your produce bags when you do the food shop. You decide. - Jenny #plasticfreejuly

15.01.2022 Hats off to Natalie, my hairdresser, at Bow Hair and Makeup, as her salon stocks EverEscents Organic Hair Care shampoo and conditioner in bulk. I get to fill up my little bottles and then she sends her big container off to be refilled too. This suits me just perfectly at the moment as I havent found a shampoo bar that suits my hair yet. It's fabulous to see such positive changes to reduce single use plastic. - Jenny

15.01.2022 Hats off to Brownes Dairy for making milk cartons sustainable! I am so happy that I can now buy lactose free milk for the family without worrying about the plastic in the carton. These renewable milk cartons are the first in Australia and I look forward to seeing more products packaged in these. They look a tad different on the inside with the protective layer made from sugarcane. Responsibly sourced brown paperboard is also used in the lining. The milk tastes great and the ...carton is strong and leak proof. At present milk cartons cannot be recycled and end up in landfill due to their combination of 3 layers; one being a thin plastic film. @brownesdairy have shown that packaging for milk products can be made from fully renewable, plant based materials. They have transitioned 25 products so far which adds up to an amazing 17.8 million milk cartons per year. And one more bonus, they are produced with low carbon emissions and fully recyclable. Its a win-win!! - Jenny

15.01.2022 One of my pet plastic peeves is the amount of plastic that sanitary products are wrapped in. Ive been wanting to try out some of the alternative products available for ages but have been a bit nervous about it. A little while ago a friend told me about @modibodi underwear and how it had changed her life. So, I followed her advice and bought myself a couple of pairs to test them out. I have to say, I loved wearing them at night - I slept so much better! But, two pairs wasn...t enough to see if I could make a full transition. I figured that since, like so many others, Im home bound at the moment its the perfect time to test them out. Ive bought a bunch more and am really quite excited to try them out properly. Ill let you know how it goes soon - Nicci PS - Great to see theyre packaged in cardboard and the post bag is compostable! #plasticalternatives #lessplastic #usingmytimewisely

14.01.2022 Wishing you a very Happy Easter. Hope the bunny spoiled you! #happyeaster #plasticfreeeastereggs #chocolatecrackles #homemade

14.01.2022 This seems the perfect follow up to my strawberry post the other day. When I stopped buying strawberries in plastic punnets I didn't realise that my change would add up to a bigger one that is now giving my community alternative options to buying fruit in plastic packaging. If I hadn't made the change, and neither had each of the other individuals that shop in my local IGA, we'd all still have no other option. Small individual actions really can create bigger changes - Nicci #smallchangesaddup #makeachange #reduceplastic

14.01.2022 Most of my family use bamboo toothbrushes but one family member still loves his electric tooth brush. I have been saying for ages that I would see if I could find a better option for the toothbrush heads. I don't usually shop on line but with COVID 19 making shopping tricky I have been browsing and found these recyclable ones from CocoLive. They do say to post them back to recycle them (UK is a tad far though) so I think I will investigate to see if I can recycle in our yellow top bin. -Jenny #shopping

14.01.2022 I get so excited when I see grapes, strawberrys and cherry tomatoes pre packed in paper bags instead of plastic. So thankyou Harper's Food Market, its really appreciated! I will certainly be back to shop. Harper's Food Market OPEN 7 DAYS

12.01.2022 Have you ever been waiting in line at the local cafe watching all the other customers order with their keep cups and wished you had yours? I love my keep cup and use it every single day. Remembering it wasn't always easy, until I made a little challenge with myself,. ... 'no keep cup, no coffee'. It only took a day to remember to put my cup in my bag each morning. To me, taking my keep cup is really important as disposable coffee cups aren't recycled. The outside of the cup... is made of paper but the inside is a very thin layer of plastic. The plastic film protects your coffee from soaking through the paper so you can hold onto the cup and not get burnt. But that makes it unrecyclable as the materials cant be separated by hand. Here in Australia, we discard about 2,700,000 disposable coffee cups per day. Thats a lot of unnecessary cups! I added up my coffees over the last 5 years at a modest 1,825. That is only counting 1 per day. Imagine if 9 of my friends had done the same thing we would have saved over 18,250 cups from landfill! Small individual changes do add up! If you are still wishing you had a Keep Cup to stand in line with, drop in to your local homewares shop or go online, Cheeki Klean Kanteen The only difficult thing now is which one to choose!! Coffee Cuckoo Coffee - delicious!!

11.01.2022 Being at home in recent weeks and celebrating a family birthday during that time has meant I've been doing more online shopping than usual. While I've still been aiming to purchase plastic free items, its been very interesting to observe the different types of packaging that have been arriving. One thing I'd love to see on websites is a description of how they package goods for delivery. I've had really mixed experiences - some things in cardboard boxes padded with paper/car...dboard and others padded with copious quantities of those blow up plastic pouches. And, often the box or external packaging is enormously out of proportion to the size of the object. I'm thinking it's time to start making a list of online businesses who do a great job in the area, so I remember who to shop with again in future - Nicci #plasticfreepackaging #onlineshopping #choosetorefuse

11.01.2022 I made yoghurt! I hadnt ever really thought about making it before but, as its Plastic Free July and the family needed yoghurt for breakkie and to make flatbread, it seemed like a good idea. YouTube proved invaluable for a quick DIY lesson. I chose the simple version using milk, 1 spoonful of yoghurt, saucepan, thermometer, blanket and oven. I was so amazed at how easy it was. And the end result - delicious, healthy yoghurt with no plastic! - Jenny

10.01.2022 Through all the upheaval of COVID , I am so glad my veggie box still gets delivered like this. Ala natural, with no plastic. Thank you The Organic Collective - Jenny

07.01.2022 I love being able to buy seafood in my stainless steel container! I havent found many businesses willing to do this so was overjoyed when Sealanes Seafood Market said yes. 07.01.2022 I have found a plastic free sun cream!! Its crazy to think that nearly every sun cream comes in a plastic tube when there are better packaging options that can be recycled or reused. This fabulous new product is on the shelf at one of my favourite places - The Storehouse Fremantle. The metal tin has a screw top lid, is light and fits in my bag. I do like natural products too, so I think I'm on to something good! If you can't get my fav shopping place check out Seed & Spro...ut or Wondery Skin Food as they also have some wonderful options. Or let us know what plastic free product you have found.. Switching from plastic is so good for our planet! - Jenny

07.01.2022 Like me, youve probably done a lot more online shopping over the last few months than usual. I ordered from a lot of companies I hadnt shopped with online before and it was fascinating to see the differences in packaging. I was delighted with this paper packaging from Whittard Of Chelsea which was both functional and quite beautiful. And, Chemist Warehouse also had some great paper/cardboard packaging. I did have a couple of massive fails too! The worst was when I opened a box to discover a whole lot of polystyrene beans - I almost cried!! Wed love to hear what companies youve found that are using great alternatives to plastic packaging - tag them in a comment. 06.01.2022 I think this is so true, especially right now with whats going on in the world. Our future is created by the decisions we make and the actions we take every day. Whether thats about reducing our plastic use or strictly social distancing to help the slow the spread of an awful disease, acting today will make a difference sooner - Nicci #actnow #reduceplasticpollution #lookaftereveryone

05.01.2022 I find online shopping really difficult as plastic free products and packaging often arrive in plastic satchels. So, I was absolutely delighted to find a parcel delivered the other day in this Eco Mailer. Its made from corn starch and compostable. These types of changes always make me happy and raise my hopes. Thay are a much better option than the polymer satchels which can't be recycled or broken down. I did some of my own google searching and found a number of businesses now making these type of eco friendly satchels. I will also be asking what businesses use when putting in orders in the hope that it may sway their thinking too. Having this option has changed my thoughts on online shopping and sending my own parcels which is a great thing as Christmas is only a few months away!! - Jenny #macr0mike

05.01.2022 I was so excited to discover Recently that I can buy fresh strawberries again! My local IGA is now selling loose strawberries - no plastic punnets! They've introduced the loose strawberries in direct response to their customers' desire to reduce plastic consumption adding to the loose cherry tomatoes, celery, herbs and salad leaves. It's fantastic to see that when enough people start requesting change, businesses will respond. Do you have a local store that has introduced plastic alternatives in response to customer demands? Give them a shout out in the comments. - Nicci #plasticfree #smallsteps #smallthingsaddup #shoplocal

05.01.2022 It felt so good to be using a bees wax wrap to rest the homemade pastry in rather than cling wrap. Especially as, reducing my single use plastic when baking is one of my own challenges this Plastic Free July. ...and the Apple & Berry Pie felt pretty good too!! - Jenny

04.01.2022 I thought this was such a great little gift for fathers day! Pampering and uplifting all in one and no plastic in sight. 04.01.2022 I just love my little cutlery kit. It lives in my bag and has saved me from having to use plastic forks so many times, especially at markets and take away food places. Plastic cutlery usage might not seem like a big thing, but it is. The problem is that it's only used once and not able to be recycled due to contamination. This means it ends up in landfill or waterways. I couldn't believe that an estimated 40 billion tons ends up in landfill or waterways each year. So for me, taking my cutlery is just as important now as taking my coffee cup and water bottle. It all adds up.- Jenny .

04.01.2022 We still have time to make positive changes to save our marine life by reducing our single use plastic. Our marine animals are dying on a daily basis due to plastic ending up in the sea. The Australian Marine Conservation Society list 10 of the most dangerous plastic products for marine life as; 1. Plastic shopping bags... 2. Plastic cutlery 3. Plastic straws 4. Plastic fruit & Veg bags 5. Balloons 6. Plastic bottles 7. Take away containers 8. Polystyrene containers 9. Plastic lined coffee cups & lids 10. Disposable cups & containers I think it's worth making changes, starting today! - Jenny
