24.01.2022 This beautiful old house has been shown here previously, but there was little known about it. We now know a bit more of the background thanks to the State Library of NSW. It is a 1895 pic of a house owned by the Wilson family Rutherglen.

23.01.2022 The Wahgunyah Standpipe, McDonnell Street. Pics just in the nick of time - down it comes! Many thanks to quick thinking Janet Dickins from Wahgunyah, who managed to snap the action as it was occurring. ... The Standpipe was completed in April 1915 and was designed by John Monash and Co, with design assistance provided by Mr.J. A. Laing. The standpipe engineer was Mr. G. Venebles. (Ref. University Of Melbourne Monash archives).

22.01.2022 Gone but not forgotten! Prentice Freehold school recycled and relocated. The story boards tell the shifting phases. In 1898 The Victorian Government Gazette advertised for a female teaching assistant class 8 to assist at the Prentice Freehold School. ... In 1901 Prentice Freehold school had an average attendance of 83% from the 105 enrolments. This was considered quite good given a lot of the children were required to undertake a heavy workload of chores to help their families, this also impacted on their attendance. In 1936 the original building was contracted for salvage and demolition to A.McQuade, builder for the amount of 53 pounds. In 1946 Prentice Freehold student Colin Grant Francis was awarded a student scholarship of 20 pounds per year for a period of four years. This was a substantial help to a small community family and a remarkable achievement by Colin Francis who faced stiff competition right across Victoria.

17.01.2022 Sir Thomas Lindsay North, (G.J. Coles and Company). Another interesting local born Rutherglen identity. Sir Thomas North was born in Rutherglen in 1919 to parents John North and Sissy (Jane) Owen. A young 19 year old Tom went to Sydney at the end of the depression to seek employment. Initially he started his working life as a grocer but after joining the well known Australian Company, G.J. Coles, he worked as a shop assistant. ... A young Tom worked his way up the ladder at G.J. Coles and eventually became the first non-family member of the company to be appointed as its Managing Director. The company saw such potential in Tom that in 1959 they sent him to the United States to study and undertake innovative business leadership and retail studies. He remained with the company through to retirement in 1984. He was Knighted in 1982 for his tireless services to Retail Industries. Sir Thomas always remained a man with his feet firmly on the ground, preferred to be called Tom, valued his early upbringing and never waivered from being just an ordinary bloke. He was married to Lady Katherine (née Jefferis) who hailed from Parkes NSW. Sir Thomas passed away at the Cabrini Nursing Home (Melbourne) in 2015. Interestingly for horse racing enthusiasts, Sir Thomas was part owner of the Melbourne Cup Winner Hyperno in 1979. (refs: National archives, Museums Vic, The Herald, Vic Collections).

In a loose hand on the back written~ "Dear Mother, just a few lines to let you know I am still kicking.
