22.01.2022 The office is open again after the summer Holiday break. We look forward to 2017 and all that it brings.

22.01.2022 We have been presented with a number of flotation cell agitator shafts that have significant wear under the steady bearing. We consulted on the metal spraying method used to repair the shaft to serviceable condition.

22.01.2022 Just another in a series of site supervision assignments. This time we were supervising the alignment of a hydrostatic trunnion bearing on a ball mill.

21.01.2022 Visited a site recently where there was no care and no maintenance. Now that want to get the plant up and running on the smell of an oily rag.

20.01.2022 Another repair of a bearing housing involving metal cladding. This time a laser cladding technique was employed on this ductile iron bearing housing from a floatation cell agitator shaft assembly.

18.01.2022 We were recently contacted by one of our associates who had been working on a mill gearbox that failed after about only 15 minutes of operation. The initial feedback that we received was that the bearing in the gearbox was overloaded. When we first saw the photos of the failure our first thoughts are that this failure is due to a lack of lubrication. The extensive damage that is seen is secondary damage after the bearing has picked up. One has to be careful in concluding root... cause based on secondary damage. We have had failures in the past where people have misdiagnosed the cause due to interpreting the secondary damage only. Lubrication failures can generate a significant amount of heat. Under these conditions, metal flow and metal pickup can occur, resulting in scoring of the rollers, races and cage damage. The damage seen on the shoulder of the pinion can easily be the result of such damage without excessive forces.

18.01.2022 We have just prepared a conceptual design of a wet scrubber system for use with a rotary dryer. We are also completing the preliminary design of the scrubber.

18.01.2022 We recently completed the technical support and quality assurance checks for the installation of a replacement gear set on a 28 foot diameter SAG mill.

15.01.2022 Our Principal Consultant, Alan Boughey, has just been accepted as a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia.

15.01.2022 After a lot of effort working with our client (Metso) we finally were awarded a contract to provide Yancoal with replacement gearing for their Cable Belt Conveyor. The project requirements meant that the original through-hardened gearing was to be replaced with case-hardened gearing. This required a full design review. As the original design was around 40 years ago, our scope included completely modelling the gearbox components. This was a great exercise for our trainee, Josef Richmond.

12.01.2022 Another assignment that has kept our team busy...the design and detailing of a replacement shell assembly for a rotary breaker.

11.01.2022 Started the year with a trip to Chile to consult on a failure of a ball mill shell. The failure occurred after 8 years of operation. It helps that we have a native Spanish speaking consultant (Raul Flores) to help with the communication.

10.01.2022 Good luck to one of our trainees (Morgan) who will commence his study towards NDT qualifications. This week he starts with Materials Technology Training.

09.01.2022 It's been a while since our last post and lots has been happening. We have been on site a lot in the past months assisting in the installation of gears, inspecting journal bearings, gearboxes and other components. Back in the office we have been also doing a lot of work with gears and gearboxes. We have even got our two trainees involved. All the focus on gearing finally made me get around to finally becoming a member of AGMA. I will try to post a few more bits and pieces of interest from the past few months.
