15.01.2022 Hi all, A very complimentary review just came out in the Society of Genealogists' journal (Descent), March 2020 issue. It was written by Dr Perry McIntyre who has written several books on Irish emigration to Australia. I'm posting a copy of the review in a moment. I still have copies of the book if any of you would like one. Just email or message me vs this facebook page. Lyn
08.01.2022 DID the Murphy sisters really know Mrs Caroline Chisholm? You bet they did. My latest research news...I am certain now that one of the Murphy sisters was employed as a teacher in Caroline Chisholm's school for young ladies in Windsor. As you know, I had found a newspaper report (4 May 1841) that a Miss Murphy of the Catholic seminary in Windsor had donated 5 shillings to funds for an orphanage in Windsor. (page 137 of my book) In my current research about Caroline Chisholm I ...found an advertisement that explains what the seminary was in fact used for...it was the school that Mrs Chisholm had started in Windsor BEFORE she became engaged on her work with the female immigrants in Sydney. On 19th July 1842 the Australasian Chronicle on page 3 advertised the school which had passed hands to a Mr and Mrs Cosgrove. The advert continued to be in the same newspaper until early August that year. It begins as follows: "EDUCATION.-LADIES' SEMINARY, WINDSOR. MR and MRS COSGROVE respectfully beg to inform their friends and the public that they have taken the Establishment for Young Ladies at Windsor which was for some time under the gratuitous superintendence of Mrs. Chisholm, and latterly conducted by Miss Galvin." Miss Galvin, by the way, was the woman to whom Mrs Chisholm entrusted care of her three children while she was active with the Home for Female Immigrants (October 1841 and April 1842). By the time this advertisement about the school was printed, Mrs Chisholm and her children lived at Petersham in Sydney.
07.01.2022 A great view of the Rock of Cashel. The Murphy tombs with the tall spire (where our ancestral cousins are buried) is on the left.
