25.01.2022 I just read this in another group and it is so right... so for those of you with businesses or thinking of starting one, remember this when some one tries to ta...lk you down. *admin delete if not allowed Next time someone complains about your prices send them this A customer wanted to purchase a beautiful Wire Wrap Bracelet and spotted an artist who did absolutely amazing work, but she charged a good price too. The customer thought that the artist's price was way too high so she approached the artist and in quite a brusk fashion stated "I want to buy a Bracelet from you, but I think you charge too much." The artist was a little taken aback but replied, "Ok, how much do you think I should charge?" The customer replied I think you should charge X much, because the wire will cost this much, and the clasp this much, and the cabochon this much. I even factored in the price of your pliers." The final price the customer had calculated was a lot cheaper than the artist's original price, but she said "Ok, deal. You will get your goods in a week". The customer was very pleased with herself and can’t resist telling all her friends what a fabulous deal she has negotiated and how smart she is, and that in a week she will have her gorgeous Bracelet. A week later her parcel arrives in a lovely packaged box. She opens it and inside is Wire, a Clasp, a Cabochon, and 2 sets of Pliers. Angrily she contacts the artist asking How could you do this to me? I asked you for a Bracelet and you sent me a box of Wire, a Clasp, a Cabochon and 2 sets of Pliers?!?!" The artist quietly replies "My dear, you got exactly what you paid for, if you think there is something missing, then you will need to pay for it." Moral of the story, when you buy handmade you are not just buying the materials you are buying the artist's time, effort, love and dedication that goes into making your pieces.
24.01.2022 Something for a Sunday Leather gaskets and packings were used in water pumps and machinery. The leather gasket would slowly deteriorate with the constant water ...and gradually tear apart when coming in contact with steam. Leather gaskets and machinery packings have very low friction levels which results in less heat being generated. Leather gaskets and packings are non abrasive and don’t score(scratch) the machinery. With the nature of leather having a memory and flexibility it can shape to it’s location with out special moulds. In some situations leather gaskets and packings are still used today. 01.01.2022 "Talking about pricing leatherwork. The leathercrafting industry is a difficult field. There are many things to consider when a crafter is asked a price on a given item. Here are some things you should understand prior to asking for pricing. 1. You are asking for a unique, handcrafted item. Item is not an assembly line item. 2. It's an art. You are paying for a piece of art that is functional. 3. Quality. You want this piece to last. It's an investment, regardless of the pie...ce you are requesting, it is of quality. 4. The leather. I use high quality leathers. Think of this....partical board furniture vs solid oak. Yes, leather is made this way too. If you see it online or in a store a lot less expensive than what us leathercrafters quote, get educated. Learn what "real" leather is. Where is it from? This is especially crucial when investing in horse tack or dog collars and such. 5. Time involved. Referring back to assembly line items....good leather crafters take the TIME to create a quality product with their bare hands. Handsewing, creating unique colors from base colors, hand painting, hand cutting....you get the picture. 6. Supplies are expensive. To put it in perspective, a high quality side of leather goes for about $550. You can get a few projects out of that, yes. But different items require different parts of that side and some require thicker vs thinner in weight. Each project will require parts that a special trip or an order to a supplier will be required. It's impossible for a shop to carry EVERYTHING." So remember all this when you order from A.T. Saddlers we hand make it and do it with pride so you have it for a long time See more
