24.01.2022 'Transphobic': One Nation slammed over attempt to ban gender fluidity lessons in NSW schools. Equality Australia has expressed concern about One Nation’s Parental Rights Bill. The Bill would amend the Education Act 1990 to make parents, not school’s ‘primarily responsible for their children’s understanding of gender and sexuality.’ The Bill is intended to prohibit schools teaching concepts of ‘gender fluidity’, if teachers are found to be teaching these concepts, their teachi...ng registration would be revoked. https://www.sbs.com.au//transphobic-one-nation-slammed-ove The AASW participated in a joint letter opposing this legislation, along with the so called religious freedom bills. We hear that One Nation has introduced a similar bill into the Federal parliament, and we will oppose it as well.
23.01.2022 Bill that could see immigration detainees have their phones confiscated passes lower house A bill that could see mobile phones confiscated from immigration detention detainees has passed the lower house of parliament. The proposed changes to the Migration Act would allow Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton and acting Immigration Minister Alan Tudge to declare certain items prohibited and grant Australian Border Force (ABF) officials additional powers to search detainees.... Refugee advocates, Amnesty International and the Law Council of Australia have all rejected the push as an overreach of power that could lead to human rights breaches against detainees. Along with our opposition to mandatory detention, the AASW is against the punitive measures in this Bill that only serve to continue a tradition of human rights abuses targeting a vulnerable population.
