25.01.2022 Australia has finalised a deal for a limited travel bubble between New Zealand and select Australian states, with flights across the Tasman expected within weeks. Prime Minister Scott Morrison spoke to his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern earlier today. Speaking yesterday, Mr Morrison indicated a travel arrangement may be one-way at first, with Australians not allowed to visit New Zealand.... "It's more likely to be a one-way bubble in the first instance, i.e. New Zealanders being able to travel to Australia, that's good for Australian tourism," he said. Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack then today confirmed NSW and the NT will be the first states to welcome quarantine-free travellers from New Zealand. "I'm announcing the first stage of this arrangement, under which quarantine free travel will be possible from New Zealand to New South Wales and the Northern Territory from Friday 16 October, 12:01 am to be precise," Mr McCormack said.

20.01.2022 Remembering Jack Brownlee and Charlie Howkins In 2018 Jack Brownlee, 21, and Charlie Howkins, 34, died when a trench collapsed at a work site in Ballarat. The incident was a catalyst for change in Victoria's workplace manslaughter laws. ... Their families are now working with artist Garry Anderson to create a piece of public art and a memorial for families who have lost loved ones in workplace deaths. Mr Howkin's widow, Lana Cormie, says she hopes the memorial will be a celebration of life. "One of the aims of this memorial is to give a message of hope," she said. "It's not just about who has passed, but also about what we hope for the future that all of our sons and daughters can go to work and be safe, know that they will be safe, as they rightly should," Ms Cormie said. Jack's father Dave Brownlee said he was grateful to have the men honoured. "This is going to be very big for Ballarat and it will be everlasting," he said. The memorial will be built in the Winterfield Estate near the site where the men died. The Ballarat Trades Hall's Brett Edgington said he hoped the memorial would host a Workers Memorial Day service each year. Public fundraising has opened for the piece of art, and it's hoped it will be constructed in time for the next Workers Memorial Day in April. Artist Garry Anderson said it was a great privilege to be asked to work with the families to create the monument. "It's a daunting task," he said. "I would like the community to feel that I've captured some of the energy, the fight, that everybody has fought for a very long time to change laws."

20.01.2022 "STAY THE COURSE" Premier Daniel Andrews is urging Victorians to 'trust in the process' and abide by coronavirus restrictions. Mr Andrews said there was no excuse for breaking coronavirus laws, after news footage emerged of large gatherings at beaches in Melbourne. "Nobody has the right to break the rules and potentially put at risk everything that good, decent, law-abiding Victorians have built," he said. " All of the sacrifice has to be worth something."

19.01.2022 Victorian Deptuy Chief Health Officer says finding further coronavirus cases in Shepparton "isn't inevitable". The rest of regional Victoria is watching on as testing efforts ramp up in Shepparton, where three cases of COVID-19 were detected this week - how bad that outbreak ends up being may significantly impact the regions' ability to open further in the coming weeks. But with just six new cases of COVID-19 recorded statewide, and none in Shepparton, over the last 24 hours,... Deputy CHO Allen Cheng said it wasn't inevitable more cases would be found in the town. "Look, I wouldn't say it's inevitable," Professor Cheng said. "I think we got back - I think it was 150 results yesterday and the only ones that were positive were the ones that had already been diagnosed and were just confirming that. "So we're encouraged by that, but clearly there's thousands of results still to come. "These are encouraging numbers and if we have more days like this, then we would be much more reassured that it's safe to open up."

18.01.2022 The state government is urging anyone with coronavirus symptoms that's visited Colac recently to get tested immediately. The state government says viral fragments of COVID-19 were found in the town's wastewater more than a week ago. Initial testing of wastewater taken from the Colac wastewater treatment plant on 23 November was inconclusive and further analysis of the sample was requested. ... Further results received yesterday showed that very low levels of viral fragments were present, according to the DHHS. This viral shedding may come from different sources such as used tissues, off hands and skin, or in stools and last for several weeks beyond a person’s infectious period. Discovery of viral fragments of COVID-19 does not mean that a someone with an active case of coronavirus has been in the region.

"He wouldn't have got into trouble for telling the whole story," Mr Andrews said. "It is only when you don't that we all have problems. "If you happen to have visited a pretty large regional town, to not tell us you have done that is not the right thing to do. "Not for yourself, not for the people that are infected because of that and all the infections that may come that were all preventable. "If you tell the full story, you don't get into trouble."
