"We got lucky on that day, we can't rely on good luck all the time, we need to rely on good connectivity," Mr Chester told the ABC. "I'm very keen to see the Government roll out that money with a greater sense of urgency. Let's get the work done and not make excuses."

23.01.2022 UPDATE MIDDAY: Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton says the case linked to Bairnsdale Secondary College was acquired in Melbourne. The individual had their entire acquisition period, the two weeks before they became symptomatic, in Melbourne, Professor Sutton said. Earlier, the school's principal, Trudie Nagle, said the person had not been on the school grounds since July.... The school remains open, and students in years seven to 12 returned to the campus on Monday after months of remote learning. Principal Trudie Nagle said the infected person has not been in Bairnsdale while contagious. The individual has been self isolating since having got the result as a positive then they have been doing everything right, There is absolutely no risk that they have been anywhere in the township of Bairnsdale at all. **** WEDS AM: Bairnsdale Secondary College will remain open to students despite a new case of coronavirus linked to the school this week. The school's principal, Trudie Nagle, sent a message to parents last night advising them of the positive case. Ms Nagle said the school did not need to close as the person did not come on to school grounds while they were contagious. It’s really important that we reassure the community that there is no threat, no safety danger whatsoever because the individual has not been on site since July. Students in years seven to 12 returned to the campus on Monday after months of remote learning.

21.01.2022 Thousands of tutors will be recruited and deployed to Victorian schools next year to help vulnerable students who have struggled during the state's coronavirus lockdown. The Education Minister, James Merlino, said the funding was the single biggest boost to individual learning in the state's history and would benefit every government school across Victoria. Another $30 million will go towards hiring 600 tutors to work with disadvantaged students in Catholic and independent s...chools. The funding will support more than 200,000 students who have may have fallen behind in their studies or become disengaged during remote learning.

13.01.2022 UNDER CONSTRUCTION: COMMUNITY HOUSING PROJECT TO HOUSE YOUNGER PEOPLE LIVING WITH DISABILITIES UNDERWAY! Construction is currently under way for a new $1.8 million community housing development in Sale, to accommodate up to seven people living with disabilities under the age of 65. The housing development marks Stage 2 of the broader $5 million project in McCole St, and is designed to house residents who require a high level of care. The share house facility, w...hich features five bedrooms with an overnight carers room, as well as two independent units, is the first dedicated housing facility for younger people requiring access to 24/7 care in the town. For young people, who have previously only had the option of living with their family or entering an aged care home, Victorian Government Minister, the Hon Melissa Horne, described the opportunity to live independently with other young people as a 'game changer'. "We're all about providing accessible affordable accommodation for people with disabilities for their whole of life, and getting young people out of aged care facilities", says Five Star project chair Leo O'Brien. "Some of them have been under their parents care for quite a few years, so there's things like life skills like cooking, shopping and looking after their money that are needed, so we run programs for all those sorts of things." State Manager of Community Housing Ltd, Grant McNeil commended the Sale community on raising the money for the project in collaboration with funding from the Victorian Government. Community fundraising events such as 'Dancing With The Stars', held between 2010 and 2013, were instrumental in bring the project to fruition. The project is due for completion in April 2021.

12.01.2022 GO THORPDALE! THE RE-OPENING OF A GRAND OLE GIPPSLAND HOTEL! After a six month hiatus, the Travellers Rest Hotel in Thorpdale reopened on Friday under new ownership and management. The vacuum cleaners were out, and final touches of paint were added to spruce up the old building, which will begin a new life as a destination pub that will hopefully attract tourists and new life to the town. Originally built in 1905, the pub was run by four generations of the Bantock family, wh...o gave the interior of the building an Art Deco makeover in 1937, with winnings from the Melbourne Cup. As the centre piece of picturesque Thorpdale, backpackers who worked on the neighbouring potato farms would often stay at the pub, which was well patronised by the local farming and football loving community. But tragedy struck in 2017, when beloved publican Johnny Bantock perished in a fire which engulfed the building. Johnny’s memory and the Bantock legacy which has been honoured by the new owners with the renaming of the front bar as the ‘Bantock Bar’. As the new hotel navigates the delicate balance between serving long-time locals and the palettes of weekend tourists from Melbourne, the building has been renovated with a spectacular beer garden and deck to make the most of the town’s exquisite views. Plans for upstairs accommodation, wedding receptions and even a potato vodka distillery are also on the cards. The new kitchen and bistro is set to reopen in February next year, and will showcase local produce, bush foods and dishes featuring Thorpdale’s most famous export- potatoes!

11.01.2022 Sad news on Phillip Island. A woman has drowned at Smiths Beach last night. Emergency services were called at 6.40pm when the 24-year old Melton woman was seen struggling in the water. She was brought to shore by other swimmers before paramedics arrived but she was unresponsive.

10.01.2022 BREAKING: ZERO DAY Victoria has recorded a day with no new locally acquired coronavirus cases, and none in hotel quarantine. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) says there are 38 active COVID-19 cases in Victoria.... DHHS received 32,767 test results on Wednesday. The Department's data also show not a single COVID case has been recorded in East Gippsland local government area since the recent community outbreak. This is despite more than a thousand tests being done in the region. Fast forward 12 months, and Mim is back on the Radio telling everyone to get to East Gippsland. There really is no other place like it. 10.01.2022 Bairnsdale's Kevin Nunn, 56 has been named Australia's VET Teacher/Trainer of the Year. Based at TAFE Gippsland Forestech, Kevin teachers all sorts of courses, including chainsawing, tree felling, excavator, harvester and dozer courses. When Forestech closed due to bushfires, Kevin and his colleagues worked on the fires for 4 months. "When you win something like this... I get the accodades for it, but the Forestech team is a really strong team... that's how you look good, because of a good team."

05.01.2022 CRICKET RETURNS TO WALHALLA Wet and windy conditions weren’t enough to deter Walhalla and Rawson from taking part in a Twenty20 match today to raise money for men’s health charity Movember. The match was the first this year at Walhalla’s historic cricket ground which sits on a mountain overlooking the town.... Some big hitting, especially from Rawson, meant that lost balls were a challenge throughout the day. Rawson’s team was made up of members of the local community, while the Walhalla XI comprised players from clubs across Gippsland. Rawson finished the winner after choking Walhalla’s run scoring. The two teams will face off again in February at Rawson’s home ground for a Pink Stumps Day match to raise money for breast cancer.

04.01.2022 THE BOGONG MOTH RETURNS !!! The thousand kilometre migration of the bogong moth into our Gippsland Alpine Region is almost complete. In 2017, 2018 and 2019 the bogong moth stopped arriving in any real numbers and almost disappeared. Over 4 billion usually turn up each Spring.... Scientists from Zoos Victoria are in the mountains documenting the moths' 2020 arrival... and this year they are noticing a very exciting increase in population... bogong moths are fluttering in in high numbers! The moth is the second biggest energy provider to the alpine region other than the sun.

01.01.2022 WOMAN ATTACKED IN TRARALGON Gippsland detectives have released an digital image of a man who grabbed a woman and tried to drag her into a park in Traralgon last week. The woman was walking along Whittakers Road, near an underpass bridge, when a man with a rottweiler started following her, at 6.45pm on Thursday October 8. ... Victoria Police say he made sexual advances towards her and tried to pull her into a nearby park. She managed to break free and run away. The man is believed to be aged in his 20s, of thin build with bushy eyebrows and dark circles under his eyes. He was wearing a black hooded jumper at the time of the incident. Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers.

Publicly-owned forest agency VicForests has allowed an unburnt coupe at Nowa Nowa, four hours east of Melbourne, to be logged by Gippsland TAFE students for training. This is despite about half of East Gippsland forests marked for logging being destroyed during last summer's bushfires....
