24.01.2022 KALGOORLIE MP THROWS SUPPORT BEHIND DEAN NALDER AS NEW WA LIBERAL LEADER Member for Kalgoorlie Kyran O'Donnell said he will support Shadow Treasurer Dean Nalder to replace Liza Harvey as WA Liberal leader. Ms Harvey announced yesterday she would be stepping down from the position to give her party an opportunity to reset its election strategy.... Health spokesman Zak Kirkup and Mr Nalder both declared they would nominate for the position. Mr O'Donnell said Ms Harvey's decision was unexpected but there's no reason the party can't win the election. "Prior to COVID I thought we were in with a huge chance, COVID, Premier got a huge swing to him, understandable, but there's no reason why we can't turn things around and be re-elected," he said. Mr O'Donnell said he preferred Mr Nalder for his economic background and his vision for the future but he will support whoever the party chooses. "It would be great if just one member nominated so we could all unify behind [them], but at the moment two have nominated," he said. "Whoever gets in we are going to support."

"This is not just consolidating Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines, this is... consolidating the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder for the future," Mr Beament said. Tell us your thoughts on what the merger will mean for Kalgoorlie-Boulder?

The Eastern Goldfields Historical Society has been awarded $105,000 by the State Government to install interpretive signage for the heritage trail. ... President Scott Wilson is hopeful it will be launched by the middle of next year. "It's got a wealth of history but when you go there, there's nothing to the untrained eye," he said. "But when you put your eyes on the ground you can see the broken glass, the foundations or the old rail siding that's still there. 18.01.2022 Two young Nationals members have resigned from the party after they allegedly gave Nazi style salutes at a Kalgoorlie event. Labor MP Kyle McGinn told state parliament last week the two men repeatedly made the gesture towards him at the Kalgoorlie Cup, while screaming McGinn and McGowan. Mr McGinn said the behaviour was absolutely disgusting and Premier Mark McGowan further condemned it yesterday. ... Nationals WA state president Steve Blyth said the penalty for this behaviour was expulsion, but the men had resigned voluntarily. I certainly don't condone that type of behaviour, he said. We have a very strong code of conduct within our party and our investigations are making sure that our two key candidates out there, Nick Fardell and Rowena Olsen are not being implicated in any issues like this." The ABC could not reach the two men for comment.

16.01.2022 A big exploration push is under way to find new reserves for Kalgoorlie's historic Mt Charlotte gold mine. The underground mine has been operating since 1963 and has been ramping back up under new owners Northern Star Resources and Saracen Mineral Holdings. Northern Star CEO Stuart Tonkin has described Mt Charlotte as the "forgotten gem" in the company's $1.1 billion acquisition of a 50 per cent share in the Super Pit last year. ... Since April, Mt Charlotte has operated 24/7 instead of Monday to Friday rosters. Recent drilling has more than doubled the reserves to 510,000 ounces, which represents five years' life at current production levels. The deepest workings are about 1km down and Mt Charlotte geologists say there is significant mineralisation at least 200 metres below those levels. "People forget how big the gold system is at Mt Charlotte ... it's produced 5.5 million ounces and that's the equivalent of Kanowna Belle just down the road," Mr Tonkin said. New underground drilling platforms are now being established to find out how much gold is hidden below. Jarrod Lucas, ABC Goldfields-Esperance

13.01.2022 The Royal Life Saving Society is warning swimmers about the dangers of mixing alcohol with the ocean, after two near-drowning incidents off Esperance today. Four people were hospitalised after getting caught in a rip at the popular Twilight Beach. Three are in a stable condition and one is serious, according to the WA Country Health Service. ... They were part of a group who had drinking heavily before entering the water. Royal Life Saving's Lauren Nimmo says about 35 people drown every year in WA and alcohol is involved in about one-third of deaths. "Drinking alcohol significantly increases your risk of drowning," she said. "You underestimate the risk, you're more likely to participate in risky behaviour, you have a slower reaction speed so if you do get into trouble it's much more difficult for you to get out of it." In a separate incident today at Munglinup Beach, about 80km west of Esperance, a swimmer narrowly escaped after also getting caught in a rip. 07.01.2022 RELAXED BORDER SPARKS HOPE FOR STRUGGLING BUSINESSES Shire of Dundas president Laurene Bonza said the relaxation of the WA border should provide welcome relief for struggling businesses along the Eyre Highway. Cr Bonza said roadhouses along the highway, which links WA and South Australia via the Nullarbor Plain, have been severely impacted, with most losing 90 per cent of their revenue while others have been forced to close.... I don't expect that we're going to have the volume of traffic that we normally have which I think averages in the region of 600 vehicle movements a day, she said. At least if they've got a relatively steady stream across that's going to be helpful for them. In Esperance where worker shortages have burdened hospitality and tourism, Taylor St Quarters owner Jane Coole said local businesses would be competing to hire good staff entering the state from November 14. A normal summer we need 30 to 35 staff, she said. We are estimating this year it will be times three, times four, if the crowds coming in now are any indication. The Drone Way: Ben Stamatovich
