24.01.2022 Are you familiar with the term Under-Insurance?... Certain cover sections, fire, business interruption, and electronic equipment contain under-insurance (also known as ‘Average’) clauses that may limit the amount that is paid out when you have a claim. This will only happen if you understate a sum insured or declared value.... We recently worked with a client who regrettably had the under insurance clause imposed on their claim. The client has 5 business names but is only insured for property damage for one of those businesses. The sum insured of their schedule was $10,000 however due to other businesses there was an actual total sum insured of between $80-$100,000. Unfortunately, due to estimating incorrect values the client only received a payment settlement of $4,000 for their $26,000 loss. Our number 1 tip: It’s your responsibility, the Insured, to ensure that the sums insured under this policy are adequate. Underinsurance may cause reduced benefits payable by an Insurer at the time of a loss.
