09.01.2022 Crayfishers are your pots ready!? The 'whites' are about to start walking according to Fisheries WA's predictive modelling techniques, with rock lobster scientists predicting the 'white run' will begin TOMORROW. "Each year the timing of the migration is strongly correlated with water temperature, with warmer waters associated with an earlier migration," Fisheries WA says.... "This year, our water temperatures have been average, not too hot and not too cold, indicating that the migration will most likely begin towards the middle of the month, around Wednesday, November 18". The 'white run' is when western rock lobsters who are approaching sexual maturity moult out of their regular red shells into a lighter colour becoming what's known as a 'white'. These lobsters then leave the safety of coastal reefs and being a mass migration out to sea, into waters as deep as 250m, until they reach their breeding grounds. It is during this time, that crayfishers, both professional and amateur, tend to haul in the biggest catches. Fisheries WA says anyone who wants to catch rock lobsters must have a licence to fish and abide by all fishing rules, including bag and boat limits. Fisheries WA.
