Earlier this week, The Drum revealed that the NSW Opposition (Labor) would propose a bill criminalising this form of abuse. Under the proposed law, jail terms for perpetrators could be as high as 5-10 years. ... Coercive control is a form of domestic abuse where a perpetrator uses a system of behaviours to dominate and control victims. This includes isolating them from their friends and family, enforcing rigid rules, humiliating or insulting them or monitoring their movements. Speaking today, NSW Attorney-General didnt go as far as offering bipartisan support, but suggested there was widespread interest in the issue. There is multi-partisan support to look at this issue very seriously but I dont want to rush it, he said. I think we still think of domestic violence as wife-bashing its much more complicated than that. He told the ABC the NSW government have been speaking to Scottish and English officials, where coercive control laws have been introduced. He says any changes to the law wont work unless all groups are on side. You need to not only look at legislative change but make sure that institutions, front line services understand the change and most importantly police understand the change.

They don't trust the government will build technology that is good, that is, for example, open source and makes use of the best minds in the country. ... They also don't trust government to look after that data properly. And that lack of trust, I think, does feed in negatively in how technology can be used for public health purposes. I have no doubt that in future technology will be part of the solution to lots of different public health problems. If we are to use it effectively, the way in which the government can contribute to that cause is by building up a relationship of trust with the public. So, that means being open and accountable, that means practising things like data minimisation - data is only collected for a specific purpose and then deleted - that you have some form of accountability how that data is used. And transparency: that we're treated like adults rather than children and patronised to by government, told that the COVIDSafe app is like sunscreen when it isn't."
