14.01.2022 INDIGENOUS LITERACY DAY 2020 Learning to read is something that many of us take for granted, but what if you already speak two or three languages other than English before you start school? And what if there were no books at all published in your first languages?... This is the reality for many Indigenous children living in remote communities. This year the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) is celebrating language and literacy in remote communities and the immense opportunities that positive community-led engagement can provide. The ILF’s vision is equity of opportunity, focusing their programs on installing a love of reading from an early age and they are excited to invite you to their national, virtual Youtube Live Premiere event at 12.30pm,today, Wednesday 2nd September, for a celebration of Indigenous language and literacy. In previous years, this celebration has taken place at the Sydney Opera House with children from remote communities, local schools, ILF Ambassadors and supporters. This year, due to COVID-19, it is open for the first time to everyone Australia-wide! Join the event to learn about the impact of the programs, hear a delightful story read in Kriol, meet children and adults in community and enjoy a special version of a song by ILF Ambassador and beloved Australian popstar, Jessica Mauboy. Join the event here: https://go.ilf.org.au/Event

11.01.2022 No better time than right now to consider these....

11.01.2022 Today we celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander CHILDREN’S DAY. . This years theme highlights the uniqueness and importance of the knowledge and wisdom of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, starting in childhood. . Hearing children’s voices today plays a crucial role in their development towards being influential Elders and leaders of the future.... . Why is it important? The majority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are thriving and growing up strong in their cultures, with support from their families and communities. However, a significant number of our children continue to face ongoing challenges stemming from colonisation and its effects. This includes discrimination, poverty, systemic removal, inter-generational trauma, dislocation from land and culture, and community dis-empowerment. . To achieve equality, we must approach these challenges through a holistic approach, considering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s well-being, safety and development. . " In 1988, the first National Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day was established on 4 August and was set against the backdrop of protests led by Aboriginal people and their supporters during the bicentennial year. Aboriginal peoples felt a day was needed to celebrate the children, to give them confidence and make them feel special and included. The date 4 August was historically used to communally celebrate the birthdays of Aboriginal children who were taken from their families at a young age, without knowing their birthday the Stolen Generations. " . For more information check out the links below. https://aboriginalchildrensday.com.au/childrens-day-2020/ https://youtu.be/63dsLW9Pmg8
