24.01.2022 *Repost as the other post got deleted* There are many things I am passionate about when it comes to Black rights, Black lives and First Nations rights. I try to advocate and be an activist through my artwork and photography as much as I can. Birthing on Country is one of those subjects I feel SO strongly about and I believe this video needs to be shared, to draw attention back to the Australian social landscape and how we are different to, not better than America when it come...s to having a fundamentally broken system that has benefitted the colonial, white majority off of the labour and oppression of POC and First Nations people. Havana Stafford created this video and she wants this video to be a reminder that racism runs much deeper than overt displays of aggression, and that there is substantial work to be done in rooting out and dismantling the systems that perpetuate discrimination and disadvantage amongst racial minorities. Particularly in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders communities. Video by Havana Stafford @havanastafford Video description: Havana Stafford reports on the Birthing on Country movement, and what that means for Aboriginal people.

22.01.2022 I posted these on my instagram and have had so many people ask me if they can use them for profile pictures or to share so I am putting them here on facebook for you to download, share, use etc.

22.01.2022 Last night as my sister was driving getting us home from Perth to Hedland, somewhere in the middle of nowhere I managed to get 1 bar of reception & log into the... zoom event for the AusMumpreneur awards. To be honest I was going to skip the awards as I had a deadline & needed to get home & in no way did I think I had a shot of winning. Everyone looked amazing all dressed up to celebrate and it was wonderful to see so many powerful women take out gold, silver and bronze. So imagine my complete surprise when they announced my name as a winner and suddenly I was on the zoom screen and accepting the Gold award for Indigenous Business Excellence. I am incredibly humbled to be here but also so proud of myself for pushing forward, working through my traumas and smashing goals in my business life. Thank you so much to Katy and Peace for the hard work they’ve put into running these awards all on an online platform whilst covid19 has presented us with difficulties making it very different to the normal huge event it would have been. What an amazing effort from them to coordinate all this online. I want to thank my mother for being my biggest supporter & cheer leader and always there for me no matter what. Also huge thank you to Skye, Jessica, Tia, Emma, Jakki, Ambre and Belle for being my hype girls and always believing in me. I want to acknowledge my ancestors who came before me and my elders past and present. As a domestic violence survivor I have learnt to be resilient. I wanted to prove that I really was worthy of success and capable of realising my dreams. It’s not easy being a single mum and running a business full time but everything I do I do for my kids. To provide a better life and to show them they can do anything they put their mind to if they believe in themselves & work hard. As an Aboriginal woman + mother, I love hearing personal life stories and creating images that will tell a story beautifully and authentically for years to come. Over the years I have met so many amazing families and have been able to memorialise stunning imagery of families, newborns and of my culture. I honestly wouldn’t be here today without all my amazing clients. Through my art and photography I will continue to shine the light on my culture, my goal is to change that narrative from those negative stereotypes, to show how resilient we are, that we are still here & powerful with 60,000 years behind us.

21.01.2022 Thank you Vogue Australia!

20.01.2022 "I wanted to show that we First Nations people can and should be on covers like Vogue! Representation matters so much, and for people like me to see other blak faces with such positive representation is so needed and so important." Vogue has chosen a handful of favourites, and spoken to the creatives behind them in both Australia and New Zealand about the spirit of the challenge, why they chose to create the images that they did, and how they hope power structures might shift to celebrate each of us.

17.01.2022 Kariyarra Ngangka (mother) and Yawuru father with their Kurlukurlu (baby) boy on Kariyarra country. In the first image Ngangka is sitting under the shelter of the Mia Mia nourishing her kurlukurlu. The Mia Mia was a shelter where the pregnant women would go and wait for the birth of their baby. Connecting with country, walking the path well trodden by their mothers, grandmothers and the women who came before them.... www.instagram.com/bobbilockyer

16.01.2022 When my sister Skye (@skyelockyer on instagram) asks me if I’ll make her a flower crown and take photos of her I run and grab my camera ok we were actually sitting in the car with our cameras already, driving through Ngarluma country for an exciting upcoming project we are working on together. Pilbara wildflowers errywhere Some little random facts. When I was in primary school I wanted to be a florist or a fashion designer. I was and still am obsessed with flowers. I u...sed to design and sew outfits for my barbie dolls and stick flowers on them. My sister Skye was my first model growing up when I always had a disposable camera in her face and made her pose endlessly in the flower garden at the front of our house. I would wrap random fabrics around her to make fashionista outfits and tell her to sit in the pink flowers and pose for me when she was 4! Of course back then I didn’t know I’d end up being a photographer, I thought this part was all about the fashion design. Now as an artist I get to do all.the.things. Ps for anyone waiting for an email or message reply I’ll get to them all over the weekend, it’s been a massive week of work and I have so much to catch up on. Please be patient with me I promise to get back to everyone soon

10.01.2022 I finally got my hands on my own copy of Vogue- who knew it’d be so hard to find a copy in my little town. I wanted to show that we First Nations people can and should be on covers like Vogue! Representation matters so much, and for people like me to see other blak faces with such positive representation is so needed and so important. I want it to be a norm for Indigenous women to be on covers and magazine spreads and not done in a tokenistic way or just because it is NAIDO...C week..There’s an amazing song by Thelma Plum that gives me chills every time: ‘I remember looking at magazines/I never saw anyone quite like me/It was hard, it was hard for me/I would never/speak up out of turn/Bout those blonde blue-eyed girls/They were beautiful/But it was hard, hard for me to dream.’ That song just resonates with me so much because it is so true for girls like me who didn’t see ourselves in the mainstream media or fashion. My experience isn’t a unique one but identical for hundreds of young Aboriginal kids growing up. Being bullied for the colour of our skin, being degraded for the width of our noses, being racially targeted because of who we are. Looking to the shelves of Magazines and seeing that the epitome of beauty was white skin, blonde hair and blue eyes. There was never a familiar black face staring back at us on the cover of the likes of Cosmo, Dolly, Cleo let alone Vogue when I was growing up. I commend @vogueaustralia for listening to our voices, for giving us increased representation in major fashion and beauty media and giving us space to talk. I really hope this becomes a new standard. Not just because #blacklivesmatter is "trending", I want to see this become a norm. I want to see a media landscape where we don’t have to push so hard for diverse inclusion. I still want to see an all First Nations cover- that means Indigenous writers, creatives, photographers, Indigenous owned fashion labels, Indigenous owned jewellery and Indigenous models. Go buy the latest issue of Vogue and support the 20+ amazing BIPOC featured. Please please continue to amplify black voices. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.

08.01.2022 today is my mums birthday so I thought I'd finally share this project we worked on together last year which she presented at the 2018 CATSINAM conference. Happy birthday Jilbya The project is still in development and we put it together in just a few days with limited video equipment (no tripod or sound equipment) but believe its such an important message to share. special thanks to my gorgeous sisters Bobbi and Kahlie for allowing their stories and personal, intimate photos to be shared.
