25.01.2022 I often remind Yoga Teachers and Yoga Therapists to be mindful of the importance of the blood supply to the brain, and to be aware of practices that might put extra stress on the foramen (or holes) at the sides of the cervical vertebrae, that protect the blood vessels running to the brain. From Visible Body; an interesting Fact about the Basilar artery: The basilar artery (highlighted in blue) is formed from the joining of the two vertebral arteries, giving rise to the right ...and left posterior cerebral arteries, which means it contributes the posterior component of the Circle of Willis. The basilar artery provides blood supply to the brain stem and cerebellum. Fun Fact: Basilar artery aneurysms account for about 5% of all intracranial aneurysms.

25.01.2022 I loved listening to this Podcast. Enjoy learning from Gina's wisdom and knowledge, especially if you are considering how to make a living as a Yoga Teacher.

24.01.2022 "It was a springboard to find something that originated from within, rather than from teachers who sought control over their students in ways that did not feel safe, spiritual, kind, or compassionate. This is a quote from a Yoga student who studied with Patobi Jois (her name is Michaelle Edwards) that indicates a clear and positive mindset has been initiated from her abusive experience : You may have seen a range of articles and stories exposing the culture of sexual abuse ...within the Guru - Student based approach to Yoga Teacher Training. If you are interested in reading more; here is the full article from Matthew Remski. He writes about adverse experiences in yoga culture at matthewremski.com. https://thewalrus.ca/yogas-culture-of-sexual-abuse-nine-wo/

23.01.2022 This is really interesting from a therapeutic perspective: Stress is a driving factor for most health issues. Because of the close connection with the vagus nerve and the stimulation of the parasympathetic response, the complex of the three diaphragms is one of the most powerful ways to affect the parasympathetic response, The voice really is the telltale sign of health in a person, notes Ginger Garner. To me, its a new bio-marker for health, all the way across the life...span. If women and men want to learn to take control of their health, we need to learn to take some very basic pieces. And the 3 diaphragms are one that will take you a very long way. If we learn how to work with the three diaphragms as a wholeness, we can trigger powerful healing benefits in the body as a whole. In particular, the vagus nerve interfaces with the respiratory diaphragm as well as the soft tissues of the jaw, fascial structures and vocal complex And Ginger Garner writes some very inspiring blogs too: https://gingergarner.com/labrador-lizard-vagus-sake/ See more

22.01.2022 A Podcast for Yoga Teachers......a really good conversation between J. Brown and Loren Fishman. Both very interesting Yoga teachers with some different perspectives on alignment and safe Yoga practice: https://www.jbrownyoga.com/yoga-talks-podca//loren-fishman

21.01.2022 This is one of those Yoga stories regarding Professional Boundaries and respect that we need to share and respond to. I am really grateful to the committees within Yoga Australia who have created clear guidelines for its Yoga Teaching members to work within. A bit of a warning before you watch the video, the teacher has NO understanding of professional boundaries when it comes to asking permission, nor does he have an appreciation of what this experience of being 'adjusted' could feel like. https://www.nytimes.com//reader-/yoga-touch-reporting.html

21.01.2022 You may have noticed that this page has been fairly quiet for the year of 2019. Claire Nettley and I have taken a bit of time out to restore some balance in our busy lives. The Yoga Teacher Training course that was originally presented by Kaye and Jose is continuing in Bendigo, now coordinated by our very wise and experienced colleague, Gina Macauley from YogaHara. There are currently 16 trainee teachers in Bendigo who have immersed themselves into the exciting and challenging process of integrating the principles of Yoga into their lives in preparation for teaching. It is such a privilege to observe and join with these students and l am continuing to teach the functional anatomy component on the course. We are planning some self-care and educational workshops for 2020, so look out for the upcoming dates and venues.

19.01.2022 It is well established that poor diet, lack of exercise, and stress can be contributing factors. Indeed, besides medication, common measures to lower blood pressure include reducing salt intake and doing aerobic exercise such as walking, running, or swimming. But theres a growing body of scientific evidence that suggests there could be another antidote yoga. https://www.bbc.co.uk//is-yoga-as-good-for-me-as-aerobic-e

19.01.2022 Jess Glenny from the UK has added another wise conversation to her Blog collection: "The definition of yoga can be whatever you like, but for me it is that I am poised on the brink of creation, and I am thinking, what can I form from my clay? How can I throw my pot, temper my steel, spin my yarn into a bright cocoon in which the parts join up and it is more than the sum of the words?" https://movingprayer.wordpress.com//ashtanga-vinyasa-wild/

18.01.2022 We hope to see you at the shoulder workshop on the 23rd September. Check out our events tab for more information. In the meantime, our next video on the shoulder joint is ready for your viewing pleasure. We explore the anatomy and movements of the joint along with some practices to help you engage the muscles that support the joint (and Claire finally learns why she can't get her hands to touch in Gomukhasana (cow face pose). Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rgWH-rP2WA&t=18s

18.01.2022 Some interesting statistics from the article - You Don't Know Yoga, written by Dr. Joanna Mills: "A national survey of yoga in Australia suggested that respondents started practicing yoga for health reasons and believed that yoga improved their specific health or medical condition. Remarkably, a majority of respondents did yoga for mental health issues (i.e. managing stress and anxiety) over musculoskeletal problems." https://blog.yogaaustralia.org.au/you-dont-know-yoga-fb2628

18.01.2022 The wonderful Cameron Tukapua will be joining us in Melbourne this October to explore the Power of Yin in her 'Nourishing Roots' workshop. 18.01.2022 Apologies for the ongoing references to medical language and science included here....but fascia is such as interesting topic! "Fascia has been ignored for a long time so theres a lot of catching up to do in the research lab. But the latest findings strongly suggest that myofascial therapy is effective because it: 1. Improves the glide between the enveloping septa; 2. Affects mechanoreceptors (golgi tendon organs); and... 3. Works with the body as a system, addressing muscle and connective tissue as functional units. So fascia separates and unites; supports and communicates; and stores energy and releases it. How is fascia able to possess such inconsistent properties?" http://www.fascialfitness.net.au//fascia-science-made-sim/

11.01.2022 So much inspiration following the professional yoga psychology training with Dr Michael de Manincor & Janet Lowndes where we explored the psychological wisdom o...f the Yoga Sutras & related these ancient teachings to the experiences and concerns of today (particularly depression and anxiety). Its so important from a teaching perspective that we are able to be more responsive to the mental health needs of our students. Its exciting that evidence-based research is now available and will continue to emerge to confirm the positive impact that yoga has on mental health and wellbeing #mentalhealthawareyogateacher
