15.01.2022 It’s grass pollen season and we’ve had a stormy spring so far. But what does this mean for asthma and hay fever sufferers? It means the chances of a thunderstorm asthma event is high. Thunderstorm asthma can happen suddenly. It’s serious and in some cases, it can be life-threatening. But what is thunderstorm asthma? It's a type of asthma that’s triggered by a large amount of grass pollen mixing with a certain type of thunderstorm. The risk period is between September and Janu...ary each year. People that are most at risk are asthma and/or hay fever sufferers. Remember, even if you're a hay fever sufferer that hasn't had asthma before, you're still at risk! To limit your risk, stay inside during thunderstorms this grass pollen season. Also, make sure you know the 4 steps of asthma first aid. 08.01.2022 What is antimicrobial resistance (AMR)? We’re glad you asked as this week is World Antimicrobial Awareness Week. AMR is a huge threat to our health. It interferes with the prevention and treatment of a range of infections that are caused by parasites, viruses, fungi and bacteria. AMR occurs when these infections become resistant to antibiotics. In Australia, the leading cause of AMR is the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. Antibiotics kill bacteria, but they are not able to... kill viral infections, such as a cold. Antibiotics are often wrongly prescribed for these conditions. Poor hygiene is another cause of AMR. Practising good hand hygiene is essential in preventing the spread of infections.
