Deciding to donate their loved ones organs, giving someone else the chance of life. For those of us who work in transplant specialities we see how lives can be save by this generous gift by other families, to give life to our very unwell patients. For those of us who have benefited from a families generous gift in such a tragic time, saving our lives. #organdonation #thegiftoflife #donatelife #zaidiesrainbowfoundation

08.01.2022 August is Spinal Muscle Atrophy (SMA) awareness month. SMA is a rare genetic disease that 1 in 35 people in Australia carry. It is an autosomal recessive disease, meaning both parents must carry the gene and pass it onto their baby for them to have SMA. It affects the production of a protein called SMN1 which is the survival motor neuron protein. It therefore affects the nervous system and muscle development, leading to muscle atrophy. There are 4 types of SMA seen in child...ren. Over the past 2 to 3 years care focus has been changed from a supportive care plan to a treatment care plan with the advent of different intrathecal and intravenous drugs being trialled and on the PBS. https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au//spinal-muscular-atrop https://www.rch.org.au//fact_shee/Spinal_muscular_atrophy/ https://www.curesma.org/ #curesma #nusinersen #spinraza #Zolgensma
