14.01.2022 MIGRAINE RELATED VERTIGO Did you know that up to 6 percent of men and 18% of women suffer migraine? There also exists a subgroup of migraineurs that suffer vestibular symptoms caused directly by the migraine itself! This is known a Vestibular Migraine or sometimes as Migraine Equivalent.... Vestibular Migraine (VM) affects a much smaller group, around 1% of the population. The disorder is more prevalent in amongst females, particularly if the is a history of migraine on the maternal line. Symptoms of VM vary but most sufferers have a feeling of unsteadiness, such as if the floor is wobbling beneath them. Others may experience a more traditional vertigo sensation as if they are spinning or the world is spinning around them. Feelings of nausea and vomiting along with an aversion to sound and light are common. A Vestibular Migraine may last for days at a time, debilitating the sufferer and preventing them from performing their daily activities, such as attending for work or driving. Often no pain is experienced with the only manifestation being of protracted imbalance. The good news is that Vestibular Migraine, as well as other types, respond well to modern long-term prophylactic medications. These have been proven to very effective in returning the sufferer to a much better quality of life, enabling them to fully participate in activities that might otherwise be curtailed. Imbalance has many causes. If you suffer migraine it does not automatically follow that any imbalance you experience is directly related to the migraine. Statistically it is more probable that another condition co-exists that requires diagnosis and treatment. Some other disorders that are known to co-exist with migraine are Menieres Syndrome and Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo (BPPV). The latter is more commonly known by its acronym as it is so difficult to pronounce! It is natural to become anxious when you suddenly encounter imbalance. Your GP is the best placed to diagnose and advise treatment options or investigations. Sometimes it is difficult to disentangle the symptoms and specialist input can shed light on the likely cause. Other specialists such as Neurologists and Audiologists who have an interest in balance disorders, can assist as further tests may be required. Having some general knowledge of migraine and commonly associated balance symptoms can be reassuring to sufferers who may think they are alone. Passing on information you have gleaned here may assist your family and friends who suffer migraine to seek out assistance so they might enjoy the quality of life they deserve. Any comments, questions or other feedback are most welcome.

14.01.2022 MANAGING EAR WAX Some individuals produce more ear wax than others. If, in addition they have narrow, bendy or hairy ear canals the natural egress of wax from the ear canal can be impeded. Wearing of a hearing aid can also contribute to accumulation of ear wax. Cotton buds should never be used to remove ear wax as it simply makes the problem worse. ACE Audiology is equipped to remove ear wax by a variety of techniques. The technique employed is dependent upon the softness of ...the earwax in the canal and its overall volume. For many, simply rolling the ear wax out with a wax ring under visual guidance works well. For others syringing may be necessary. More complex situations will require suctioning or a combination of methods. Whilst syringing is the most common method it does require skilled hands to ensure that it is conducted comfortably, does not induce vertigo and that the pressure applied is optimal. I regularly check my patients ears at ACE Audiology and take measures to manage their ear wax. Our clinic is equipped with all of the necessary instruments to manage even the most complex situations. If you have concerns with your ear wax accumulation please contact ACE Audiology and Hearing for an appointment.

14.01.2022 How to Protect your Hearing Aid from Loss The wonder of hearing great again with your new hearing aids can end in momentary despair when you suddenly find your cherished hearing aids, your passport to the hearing world, are not where you left them. So to help you minimise the risk and grief I have set out some suggestions to protect your valuable investment. 1. The most important first step is insure your hearing aids on your home contents policy. Whilst some high end hearing... aids come with a 12 month loss replacement policy, it is easy to forget to follow up with insuring your hearing aids. It is therefore recommended you do so immediately you pick them up from your hearing aid dispenser. 2. Face masks in this era of Covid 19 are a huge risk for losing hearing aids. When you take the mask off take extra care to ensure your hearing aids remain in place. 3. Removing a jumper is another high risk activity as the process can easily catch up with the hearing aids and be lost. Take them off first or make sure you double check they have not be dislodged from behind your ear. 4. Putting hearing aids temporarily into your pocket is another high risk activity. It is easy to forget and reaching into your pocket to retrieve a tissue or keys can have them come out as well and onto the ground and lost forever. 5. Combing long hair, particularly for women, runs the risk of the comb catching the hearing aid, so again take great care in these activities 6. Leaving hearing aids on a bench is another risk. Mixed up with lolly wrappers they can be indistinguishable and may end up in the bin when someone sweeps down the table top. Always put them into a container. 7. Pets love the smell of ear wax and will chew them into pieces if given but one opportunity. Even the most angelic pet cannot resist their natural instinct of being drawn to earwax. Always secure your hearing aids in a its case or charger when not in use. I hope these tips can assist you to ensure a long life with your hearing aids and avoid expensive replacements. Let us know by reply to this post of any unique situations you have encountered with your own hearing aids. I do recall one parent hiring a metal detector and walking a bush trail and they eventually found their childs very expensive hearing aids. One other had their hearing aids fall into the chicken warmer at a store but fortunately they were found by the attentive staff and returned to their owner.

13.01.2022 Beethoven began to lose his high frequency hearing from the age of 30 and adapted his music accordingly. Rumour has it he used an ear trumpet! Imagine if Beethoven had the magical and stylish STYLETTO hearing aids from Signia. It has its own inbuilt "Music for Performers" program. Simply wonderful and what a world of difference. Rock on Beethoven.

10.01.2022 Learning difficulties can occur in one or more of the basic processes involved in understanding written or spoken language and difficulties can be observed in the auditory, memory and processing functions, causing problems in the understanding or remembering of words, in expressing or receiving oral or written language, in forming letters or in grasping mathematical concepts.

09.01.2022 The Magnificence of Spider Silk This is the remarkable 2014 Ted talk that foretold the emergence of silk in biotechnology. We now have a silk ear drum to be tested. This could be a fantastic development if proved especially with our indigenous communities that suffer significantly from so much ear disease. https://www.ted.com//cheryl_hayashi_the_magnificence_of_sp

08.01.2022 The Hearing Services Program (HSP), previously known as the Office of Hearing Services, has made a number of changes effective from 1 October 2019. The most important and far reaching change has been to allow eligible pensioners and and veterans of the HSP to obtain a voucher directly from their Hearing Provider without first obtaining a medical authorisation. This is in line with changes made by the US Food and Drug Administration that removed the medical clearance requirem...ent in 2017. The benefit is a less complex pathway for entry into the program. The real benefit is eligible clients get access to assistance more promptly. The medical practitioner is however still a very important provider in that they come across so many individuals with hearing impairment in the course of they daily work, making them the first usually to identify a problem and recommend an appropriate course of action.

08.01.2022 The Medicare Benefits Schedule Review Taskforce Report from Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Clinical Committee - 2019 has released its draft review and is now calling for stakeholder input. The committee has done excellent work and made a number of important recommendations. If accepted the most important change will be permitting General Practitioners to refer directly to Audiologists in the community under Medicare and have the client then receive a rebate. This is contingent on stakeholder feedback and Ministerial approval. It is unclear why the committee has not included vestibular assessments as part of the package proposing GP be able to refer to an Audiologist under Medicare.

Please note there exist no travel distance restrictions to attend a Medical or Allied Health Care appointment. ACE Audiology looks forward to being of service to all those who require our support during this difficult time. Dr Yazdaneh Galt Principal Audiologist/Director ACE Audiology

06.01.2022 It is disappointing that such large businesses could enter into such conduct. I had considered the advertisements, when first published, to be distasteful in the extreme but it is almost impossible to be heard by anyone. I sincerely hope the Office of Hearing services will have added to its legislation a remit to pursue its contractors for such flagrant breaches. https://www.accc.gov.au//accc-takes-action-against-hearing

05.01.2022 Please take a few moments to review my video where I explain about the services offered by my business, ACE Audiology. You will see a puppet theatre hearing test of an infant, adult test and part of a hearing aid fitting evaluation.

05.01.2022 WHICH BRAND OF HEARING AID IS BEST? This is a question often posed to Audiologits from patients seeking the optimal solution to their hearing difficulties. There are 8 main brands available in Australia providing a wealth of choice. Working at which one is best requires teamwork with your practitioner to sort out your "pain points" and to then craft a product proposal that can address them. Not every hearing aid will have everything you want, so some degree of compromise is ...necessary. For example evaluating how important rechargeability might be versus connectivity to smart phones or overall size might be some of the considerations necessary. I have copied here an image of just one Sivantos product known as the "Silk". This device is designed to fit up to 80% of ears and can be controlled from a smart phone or run in automatic mode as you may prefer. For this month and January we are running a 10% off the normal RRP on the Silk. ACE Audiology is always happy to work with its patients to find their optimal solution. There is no "one" hearing aid that is best for everyone. I am always very happy to take a visit to see what we can do for you.

04.01.2022 Ear Wax & Cotton Buds My mother used to say "dont put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear" for a good reason. Inappropriate use of #cottonbuds to remove #earwax are notorious for doing the exact opposite. The human ear canal secretes sebum and sweat which combine with dead skin and dust to form the familiar oily earwax amongst those of European descent. Asians are more fortunate in that their earwax is more a white flaky wax that causes negligible difficulties.... The skin in the ear canal grows sideways, that is, form in to out. If you placed and ink dot on an #eardrum the dot would migrate to its edge then gradually move down the canal. As a cotton bud diameter is large relative to that of the ear canal, it has the effect of pushing most of the wax deeper to start its journey over again. This causes a snowball effect. I regularly check my patients ears for earwax and intervene before it becomes a problem. So, my mothers constant reminder still holds true today! Any comments, questions or other feedback is most welcome

03.01.2022 It was an interesting development to read about the Ear Science Institute receiving a grant to develop a silk based eardrum that would become living tissue. https://lnkd.in/eBT5XWV This follows on from a TED talk in 2014 "The Magnificence of Spider Silk" when the speaker predicted that silk could be used as a scaffold to encourage nerve regrowth. She possibly didnt imagine this remarkable development though. Ill put that link in another post.

02.01.2022 What is the Cost of a Good Hearing Aid? This question is somewhat linked to your specific listening needs, however I can provide a broad indication of the price range of hearing instruments in the market today. To start with Id like to use a car analogy. If you think about a car, you usually see there are different models such as 1, 3,5, 7 and so on. All of these cars look pretty similar but as you go up in number the trim and internal fittings are added or upgraded until yo...u reach the ultimate. The price of hearing aids is similar to the car analogy. The least featured models have a lower number designation. The lower end of the hearing aid range are around $2,500 to $3500 a pair and the high end can be up to $10,000 to $12,000 a pair. Not everyone requires the most valuable device and a good discussion with your Audiologist can define the level of investment appropriate to your hearing goals. ACE Audiology is and independent and family owned business. We are not aligned with or employed by any manufacturer so our advice is truly independent. Feel free to pay us a visit to discuss your hearing needs. We are now open in Glen Iris as well as Bulleen for your convenience.
