23.01.2022 Great to see Dr Maria Limberis giving the first Plenary Session of the 2020 North American CF Conference last week, on Laying the Foundation for the Path to a Cure: The Fundamentals of Genetic-Based Therapies! Maria begins at 40 min, 40 sec Maria completed her PhD in 2003 in CF lung gene therapy development, at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital as a University of Adelaide student under the supervision of Assoc Prof David Parsons. She then accepted a postdoc at the Univers...ity of Pennsylvania where she now leads the CF research team in the Gene Therapy program there. Congratulations Maria! Adelaide and all the CFARG team are proud of your achievements. (PS: check out the fabulous video of how genetic therapies can work at 26 min, 46 sec)

21.01.2022 We are grateful in SA that we can celebrate good news, while of course being COVID compliant. We are all very excited for the safe and happy arrival of a baby girl for Jules and Marc in September! Another potential scientist in the making?

20.01.2022 New liquid nitrogen storage in the lab. There's some very excited scientists putting the first cells away! #realscience

20.01.2022 We’re running a research survey about CF and gene therapy and would love everyone to take part! Researchers at Flinders University and the CFARG aim to examine the perceptions towards airway gene therapies for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) among people with the disease, their families, and members of the general public. Some of you may have done a similar one in the past, but we’d love you to complete this new one. To participate in the study or for more information, please click on t...he link below. https://qualtrics.flinders.edu.au/j/form/SV_8DhrwEr6nEInVSl Please share it as widely as possible so we can get lots of people responding!

19.01.2022 One of our latest articles is now available online. Nice work Ali for putting all of this together!

17.01.2022 We are excited to announce that our honours student Nikki Reyne received a Traineeship Student Award from Cystic Fibrosis Foundation USA. This project will assess the therapeutic benefit of lentiviral gene vector delivery to the nasal epithelium of CF rats as a representation of the lower airways. Looking forward to getting back in the lab when its safe and starting this research! #cysticfibrosis #genetherapy #lentiviral

17.01.2022 We're going to wrap up recruitment for our study on people's perceptions of gene therapy for cystic fibrosis in the next few weeks. Can you please fill it in yourselves and share it as widely as you can among the CF community!

16.01.2022 How does XV lung imaging work for CF you might ask? Here is the answer. https://physicsworld.com/a/novel-x-ray-technology-depicts-/

16.01.2022 For cystic fibrosis gene therapy to work, we must successfully deliver a healthy CF gene to the airway cells. We achieve this by using a gene vector that we make in the lab using hundreds of millions of cells as our tiny production factories. Two of our researchers, Nathan and Nikki, are shown here making gene vector in our lab. #cysticfibrosis

16.01.2022 While lockdown has had its challenges, it's also given us new opportunities! While many researchers around the world have not been able to physically attend conferences this year, this has not stopped us from sharing the good work we are doing! This year, 2 of our postdocs and 1 of our PhD students were able to attend and present at the first virtual American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy conference that was to be held in Boston. Having the virtual option allowed us to share our exciting research and interact with world leaders and innovators within the gene therapy space all from right here in Adelaide!

13.01.2022 It has been a pleasure working with our summer research student Lynda! Over the last few months Lynda gained hands-on lab experience and learnt all about our research into cystic fibrosis airway disease. #womeninstem #research #cysticfibrosis #genetherapy

12.01.2022 In June last year the CFARG team participated in a fundraising event with Officeworks Gilles Plains, and together we raised a total of $2776.57 for CF research! We are pleased to inform you that we chose to put the money towards purchasing a new microscopy imaging system for our laboratory . The system comprises of a Dell computer, Nikon DS-Fi3 camera and NIS-Elements D Software. This imaging system is going to help assist us to clearly visualise changes in airway disease, a...nd measure how well our gene therapy works. We’re already using it to do what’s called histological imaging to detect changes in tissue samples, identify fluorescent marker genes, and for assessing our cultured cells in the lab. All of these require visualisation via microscopy and we now have the ability to capture stunning high resolution images ! Thanks again to everyone who donated, and to Officeworks for their amazing work in raising money for CF gene therapy research.

12.01.2022 Check out the cover of the latest edition of Human Gene Therapy! It's a special edition on gene and cell therapies for pulmonary disorders. Our article describes new ways of measuring lung function using imaging, and how they will be essential for #cysticfibrosis #genetherapy https://www.liebertpub.com/toc/hum/31/17-18

12.01.2022 HDA Member profile: Dr Martin Donnelley is a Senior Research Fellow at the The University of Adelaide and a Robinson Research Institute Leader. He is the Leader... of the Respiratory X-ray Imaging Laboratory, and Co-Director of the Adelaide Cystic Fibrosis Airway Research Group, and is based at the Women's and Children's Hospital. Martin’s research focuses on developing and applying novel X-ray based methods for assessing airway and lung health, with a particular focus on mucociliary clearance and local lung function, both of which are affected in cystic fibrosis. These techniques are also vital for measuring the effectiveness of the airway gene therapies his team are developing. Ultimately, Martin’s hope is that every child born with cystic fibrosis can live a long life, free from the burden of lung disease. Find out more about Martin’s work here https://researchers.adelaide.edu.au/profile/martin.donnelley

11.01.2022 New -80 freezer day! Check out the excited scientists!

11.01.2022 Celebrating International Women in Science Day

09.01.2022 Merry Christmas to everyone from all of us at CFARG

08.01.2022 Happy Easter! We hope everyone enjoys their easter eggs!

06.01.2022 Check out the images from our latest paper led by Monash Uni Postdoc Freda Werdiger! Here we used XV imaging to measure CF lung disease in a mouse model, and have developed new ways of describing the patterns of disease present. Here's the link to the paper for more details. https://rdcu.be/b5nHl

04.01.2022 Our group are excited to be making our way back into the lab at a limited capacity keeping in guidelines of social distancing. Here is Chanty and Nikki growing cells to use in upcoming projects. #cysticfibrosis #genetherapy

01.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning.... We will remember them.
