25.01.2022 A newspaper article published on 10 September 1970 propelled one of Australias first gay groups into the spotlight. We got together with some of CAMP Incs fou...nders and members to mark 50 years since that day. Thank you to Peter de Waal, Dr Ian Black, Robyn Plaister and Robyn Kennedy for sharing their memories with us.

25.01.2022 R U OK? Day is Thursday 10 September 2020. Its our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, Are you OK? if someone in your world is struggling with lifes ups and downs. The message for R U OK?Day 2020 is: THERES MORE TO SAY AFTER R U OK?... 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. In the lead-up to R U OK?Day well help Australians know what to say when someone says theyre not OK and guide them through how they can continue a conversation that could change a life. You dont have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before theyre in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life.

21.01.2022 The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in a significant rise in demand for mental health support. LGBTQ people are especially in need of this support, as research suggests that their mental health may be disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Mental health charities offering specialist care for LGBTQ people have already seen an increase in demand for their services. However, this specialist care remains limited. https://theconversation.com/lgbtq-people-urgently-need-spec

Since then he has been wildly successful in his music career and has toured around the world. But perhaps Sivans most important role is that of gay role model. Sivan has used his elevated status to support LGBTQ youth, through his songs, his film clips or even his concertsduring a tour of the US he asked concert-goers in each city to bring warm clothing to his shows to donate to an LGBTQ homeless shelter.

17.01.2022 Andreja Peji is a Bosnian-Australian model. Andreja come out as a trans woman in late 2013. Today, she is one of the most recognisable transgender models in the world. Andreja became the first trans model to appear on the front cover of Vogue in May 2015. 17.01.2022 "Within Australia, LGBTQ+ individuals experience heightened suicidality, serious assault, homelessness and psychological distress compared with their heterosexual, cisgender peers. Young people not only experience health risks associated with their development phasefor example, heightened risk of psychopathology, physical injury and emotion dysregulationbut are also often unaware of health services available to them or have fears around confidentiality. LGBTQ+ young people,... in particular, report feeling isolated from health services. The health outcomes for someone with these intersecting identities remain largely unknown." Research is emerging identifying the health concerns of people who are both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and LGBTQ+, although this work is so far limited to adults. The evidence in adults also points to a set of health-related concerns which are unique to being Aboriginal and Torres Islander and LGBTQ+. "Some individuals move off Country in search of more accepting communities or to access gender-affirming care," Uink and colleagues wrote. https://medicalxpress.com//2020-08-health-indigenous-lgbtq

17.01.2022 In honour of trans awareness week, why not give Disclosure a watch if you haven't yet. It was released on Netflix earlier this year and if you're able, we highly recommend watching it with your team or even family members as a way to possibly broaden perspectives. It's an important, timely look at trans representation in the media, and the ongoing effects it has had. ... Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysbX6JUlaEc

17.01.2022 The free DISCHARGED ONLINE WEEKLY 90 MIN peer support group is a space for people to talk about, vent, sit with, or make sense of suicidal experiences, distress or the desire to die, without fearing hospitalisation or the police being called. It’s FREE, there are no forms to fill out, we don’t ask for any of your personal details and we don’t record anything that is spoken about. Instead of trying to solve problems or provide you with answers, we deeply listen and ask curious... questions without judgment. Facilitators are peers with lived experience of suicidal thoughts or feelings. The group is for people 18+ years old with personal experience of suicidal thoughts, feelings or actions (not carers or allies). There’s no minimum or maximum as to how many times a person can engage with the group. We use the ZOOM meeting app which is free to download for computer or smartphone. You can also call in like a normal phone call. As our groups start on time, we strongly encourage you to log in 5-10 minutes before it starts so that you can get all the tech working, and to ensure you understand how to participate in the group, how the group works and how it differs from other support groups. We keep the access codes of our trans and gender diverse group hidden off public pages to ensure it is safe for those who want to access it - please send us an email at [email protected] to join this group. We also have an email reminder sign-up form you can fill in and we will send you out an email on the day with all the details of the group you're interested in. If you sign-up for the trans/gender diverse group, then we will email you to confirm this is the community you identify with before releasing any of the group details as we keep them secret. Filling in the survey shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes and you can find it here: http://eepurl.com/g0sDzn

14.01.2022 LGBTQ censorship is real. TikTok has been using shadow bans to filter out queer content from users around the world.

12.01.2022 Conversion therapy has been a major issue for LGBTQ youth for decades, or perhaps even longer. It is often used in Christian communities to encourage queer youth to use religion to combat their homosexual desires. Anthony Venn Brown underwent such therapy in Australia and later publicly denounced such programs. He advocated for the abolition of such programs by describing the damage that they do to LGBTQ youth who are forced to undergo them, as well as the damage that lack of acceptance can have on the entire community.

10.01.2022 Non-profit community support service, Advance Diversity Services, has been recognised as Australias Service Provider of the Year in the 2020 Health + Wellbeing Equality Index (HWEI), an annual tool that benchmarks LGBTQ inclusive service provision amongst organisations in the health, human services and wellbeing sectors. Now in its second year, the HWEI is Australias only instrument for health and wellbeing organisations that provides opportunity to assess, measure and impr...ove their practices to better include sexuality and gender diverse people within their services. This free national index is administered by Pride in Health + Wellbeing, a national program that provides support, training and guidance in LGBTQ inclusive service delivery. Pride in Health + Wellbeing is part of Pride Inclusion Programs, a suite of social inclusion initiatives delivered by Australias leading LGBTQ health organisation, ACON. Claire Allen, National Program Manager of Pride in Health + Wellbeing, said the HWEI is an important resource for health and wellbeing service providers across Australia. http://ow.ly/17oZ50AW83P

09.01.2022 Binary Australia made a series of robocalls to ACT residents last week on the Sexuality and Gender Identity Conversion Practices Bill, which at its heart aims to protect regular people from avoidable harm - simple as that. It reminded me that back in the day, the nuns at my school would tie the left hand of a child behind their back and force them to be right-handed - "just like everyone else". Except there were numerous kids who were left-handed. Being left or right-handed n...o longer matters, we all accept we are born with that feature pre-programmed, so to speak. It is simply a species variation in the wonderful group that is humankind! I still think about the kids who were marginalised, in some cases subjected to corporal punishment (if they resisted) and in all cases trussed up to prevent their natural inclination to use their left hand. There was little to no consideration of long-term harm to their confidence, personal security, or academic attainment. We all just had to be the same. But by whose definition? https://www.canberratimes.com.au//conversion-therapy-ban-/

This package will focus on trans-affirming practice with the aim of strengthening the clinical and gender-affirming c...are of trans people across NSW, particularly for those at risk of suicidality and suicide. 08.01.2022 We are seeking expressions of interest from LGBTQ voice over artists interested in being a part of our Sexual Assault in LGBTQ Communities eLearning. ACON Pride Training understands the importance of LGBTQ visibility and representation, therefore we are hoping to find LGBTQ community members to be the voices of the LGTBQ characters featured in our training. Could you be the voice we are looking for?

07.01.2022 Today is Wear It Purple Day! Wear it Purple Day is about showing young LGBTIQ+ people that they have the right to be proud of who they are. It is about creating safe spaces in schools, universities, workplaces and public spaces to show young LGBTIQ+ people that they are seen and supported.... ACON is proud and honoured to be part of so many Wear It Purple events across NSW that are still being held, despite restrictions due to COVID-19. Even though todays celebrations may look a little different this year, now - more than ever before - it is vital we all continue to work together to empower young LGBTIQ+ people in Australia and around the world, and show them how important they are. Stand up and stand proud!

04.01.2022 A big win for Queensland but still a ways to go for the other states. Csabs now hopes that other states that are planning to introduce laws against conversion practices take into consideration the concerns of survivors. Im hoping that the other states will pass much broader laws that will address more than just health services. Were very hopeful that they will actually adopt the recommendations by survivors groups rather than just passing something really quickly, said ...Csabs https://www.starobserver.com.au//queensland-bans-c/197161

01.01.2022 One of the barriers to accessing appropriate healthcare occurs even before you talk to the doctor. In the waiting room you will be asked to fill out basic information about yourself,Sarah Passmore says. Itll have boxes for male, female, and then maybe just other. For some, thats not enough to describe themselves accurately, and it wont accurately communicate their health care needs either.... She explains that whilst the LGBTQ+ acronym is broad, there are many layers and subsets within the community which impact healthcare access. Even within the LGBTQ+ community, theyre not one group with one set of needs. There are a lot of different communities with different needs. Lots of different factors impact whether or not someone will tell a healthcare provider if they were LGBTQ+, she noted. Whether they thought it was necessary for communication purposes, whether there was no avoiding it, or relevance Those factors impact disclosure. https://health.anu.edu.au//what-matters-lgbtq-healthcare-a

01.01.2022 As part of Wear It Purple Day on Friday, comedian, and musician Jordan Raskopoulos is taking to a Twitch live stream to break the world record for singing The Song That Doesnt End. All the proceeds will be going to Twenty10, to help support queer youth. Yes, that annoying some from Lamb Chops Play-Along? Im going to sing it the most, she says, grimacing. If youre not familiar, Lamb Chops Play-Along is a semi-demonic show for children from the past, which features a ta...lking sheep named after a cut of its own delicious meat. One of the more enduring legacies from the show is the repeating, never-ending song The Song That Doesnt End, which does basically what it says on the tin. https://junkee.com/jordan-raskopoulos-the-song-that-/268052
