03.01.2022 Today is the last day of National Reconciliation Week. I hope you still remember what the first day of the week is remembered for? Hint: Yes Day. Today we remem...ber another important milestone of Aboriginal history. And to help you remember what it is about, here's a little memory bridge again: Reconciliation (the word) ends with an 'n' which is the clue to the important thing: Native title. And the native title is closely linked to a man whose name starts with the letter that comes before 'n' in the alphabet: 'M' for Mabo. Today, on Mabo Day, we commemorate Torres Strait Islander man Eddie Koiki Mabo and his 10-year campaign for Aboriginal land rights. Starting in 1981, Koiki Mabo and his legal team fought hard to prove that he and his people had traditional land ownership systems on Mer, an island off far north Queensland. On 3 June 1992, the High Court overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius (Latin for 'land belonging to no-one') which Australian law had used to decide over land and title since the voyage of James Cook in 1770. The court ruled that ‘native title’ did exist and the people of Mer could "possess, occupy, use and enjoy" culturally significant land and determine their ownership. This landmark decision (Mabo vs the State of Queensland) became one of the most famous court cases in Australian history, now simply known as the 'Mabo decision'. Unfortunately, Eddie Mabo died five months before it was made. It was a turning point for the recognition of Aboriginal peoples’ rights because it acknowledged their unique connection with the land. It also led to the Australian Parliament passing the Native Title Act 1993. No surprise that Mabo Day is a public holiday In the Torres Strait. For the rest of Australia, it is a chance to remember a man who had a big impact on our history. In a nutshell: Reconciliation ends with 'n' for native title. 'M' comes before 'n' because Mabo is the hero who challenged the courts. Mabo > Native title. You find (a lot of) more information in my article about native title. I hope you enjoyed Reconciliation Week and participated in an event. If not, there's still a chance to do it today. Check out the official calendar. Happy Mabo Day, See more
