25.01.2022 So this old girl, Rosy, is just about to give us another cria! Very late in the season and not exactly a planned pregnancy, she is due later this month but she has a habit of dropping a few weeks early. Stables are all cleaned out and cria coats a plenty are ready to go! But I bet she still has it on the wettest, coldest and most windy day!
25.01.2022 Silver sussex. Head over to Cacklebook for details. https://cacklebook.com/posts/1779
25.01.2022 This big boy is so lazy and carefree that he doesn't even bother getting up to eat

24.01.2022 The boys, Bandit, Romeo and Leo, having a bit of a play fight in the morning sun.
23.01.2022 Our latest hatch. 24 chicks from 32 eggs. Including our very first hatch of silver sussex! Theyre the little penguin looking ones. Very happy with fertility rates given its the middle of winter.
23.01.2022 This is one of the main reasons we won't sell an entire (not desexed) male.

20.01.2022 Another one of our girls went to her new home today. Lovely has gone up to a property at Monarto, to a new breeder and will be used as one of their foundation females. We hope Lovely has lots of beautiful cria for them in the future.
20.01.2022 I think the boys, Bandit, Romeo and Leo are a bit puffed out from all their play fighting.
20.01.2022 EDIT: rehomed. We have this buff silkie cockerel looking for a flock of his own. This signals the end of silkie breeding here at Acre Liva. Hes about 6 months old, crowing and keeping his ladies in line. No charge to a good home.... Pick up is from Lewiston near Two Wells in SA. Feel free to get in touch if youd like him. See more

18.01.2022 First cria born for the season to first time mum Reeva (on the left) and it's a girl! Not a straightforward birth but mum and cria are both doing well. Reeva looks to be a fantastic mum but her mother, Rosa (middle) and her younger sister, Raven (right) are also infatuated with the little one too. ... Welcome to the world Acre-Liva Rafferty (Raffi for short )

14.01.2022 This is a fantastic workshop for anyone just starting out and wanting to learn more about alpacas. Also a great refresher for anyone too. Susan knows her stuff and we highly recommend attending this workshop if you wish to enhance your knowledge for alpaca keeping and breeding.
14.01.2022 As you've probably seen, we are heading into breeding a few types of sussex. We have the Light and Silver sussex and today added these 5 buff sussex chicks, literally just out of the incubator as we collected them. These will be the start of our buff sussex line. Watch this space for which other sussex type we choose down the track

02.01.2022 Whats happening here? This is a young alpaca male being castrated under anaesthetic by a veterinarian. A safe procedure that all reputable alpaca breeders do p...rior to selling their male alpacas to the public. Entire male alpacas should not be sold, donated or passed on to buyers. Once they reach sexual maturity, entires will be aggressive and dangerous towards other alpacas, other animals and humans. That cute little male cria (alpaca baby) will quickly grow into 70-90kg of sexual hormones that can potentially pin a human to the ground, stomp, bite and cause serious injuries. Their drive to mate and secure their territory means entire males will try to continuously mate with female alpacas in the same paddock, sheep, goats, and other animals, causing internal injuries, psychological stress and death in some cases. Entire alpaca males should only be kept by registered alpaca studs. We want happy alpacas and happy owners. Learn about alpaca behaviour and care. Do the right thing.
02.01.2022 Some of the girls have a small morning snack of cauliflower and cabbage leaves.
02.01.2022 Some 3 week old buff sussex in the brooder yard. We use turkey starter crumble instead of chick starter, its higher in protein and helps them grow faster and stronger which is beneficial for them, particularly in this cold weather.
02.01.2022 After months of waiting, we have our very first egg from our Speckled Sussex quad. We should be able to get a few speckled chicks hatched before we stop incubating for the year!
01.01.2022 We dropped our girl Roxy off to her new home today. Shes now got 14 acres to roam at Humbug Scrub with her new little friend.
01.01.2022 Amazing sunset tonight over Lewiston.
